Will this actually pick up food and larger debris? The head that came with our V7 does a terrible job on hardwood floors.

Yes it will. I have sealed concrete floors and two cats. It works wonders.

Does this work on carpet/rugs

I wouldn't recommend using it on carpet or rugs. This is designed for hard floors. (tile, hardwood, finished concrete, etc.) We bought this specifically for that. the Dyson comes with the head used for carpet.
