Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school . . . again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus's stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves. This deluxe gift edition of the internationally best-selling first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, lavishly illustrated by series artist John Rocco, is a must-have for Riordan fans. Review: A Fabulous Gift - I bought this for my daughter (a long time Percy Jackson fan) for Christmas. She absolutely loved it and was over the moon with this gift. An all around great purchase. Review: Lovely illustrated edition - Lovely illustrated version. Bought to encourage my son to read as the colour illustrations hold his attention more easily.

Better than the film
My son loved he film and he loves his even more. The story is a bit different than the film and he says it's better. He listens to it as he goes to sleep.

An Appealing Presentation Volume
It seems to me that this elegant, and pricey, volume would work well as either a wow! introduction to Percy Jackson for a new reader, or as a nice birthday or special occasion gift for a confirmed fan. The appeal here is two-fold -- the illustrations are right on target, and the book is well made. As to the illustrations, I'm always a little leery about illustrated volumes when I've already read, and possibly reread, a series. I have the characters and scenes fairly well established in my head, and someone else's vision, no matter how well executed, can clash dramatically with what I've already got. (Maybe that's why I've never warmed to any illustrations for "The Lord of the Rings".) Well, I was happy with John Rocco's take. The characters look right enough, (especially the secondary characters), and the action pieces are true to what I saw as the author's intentions. A nice touch is the Camp map at the front of the book and the quest map on the endsheet. The illustrations aren't too numerous, (this isn't a graphic novel), but the choices that were made about what to illustrate, and when, seemed valid. As to quality, this has been made for heavy use. The binding is reinforced. The boards are good. The dust jacket isn't anything special, but it's substantial enough. The paper is glossy and high quality. This isn't a Turtleback style book or library bound, but it's been made to last for a while. There are varied and interesting type fonts that jazz up the text, and give the book a touch of elegance. So, the Percy Jackson series is engaging and ripping and a great series for a younger reader. A classy edition for that young reader is a nice touch, and this book seemed to fit the bill.

Reading skills
My 9yr old son really enjoyed the story but said the reader was, "too squeaky and American and not like teenagers voices at all except for the guy with horns. He wasn't very good at doing different people."

Dont bother
Half of the story has been cut out and the main character is referred to as piercy throughout. My year 4 class were not impressed. Currently awaiting a refund.

Special edition of a very enjoyable book
This was a present for my 10-year-old son who now loves the whole Percy Jackson series, and indeed everything Rick Riordan has written. This makes a nice gift, with its oversize, colourful illustrations.

Beautifully Illustrated 😍
This was AMAZING. I've long been a Rick Riordan fan but I am now mama to an 8 year old boy who HATES to read. He loves being read to, and we have started with some of the stories I was enchanted by as kind/teen/young adult. He like Harry Potter but I stumbled across this illustrated version after I read the Heroes of Olympus series for myself. I thought he would love it and I was right! He is enthralled by the pictures, which were BREATH TAKING and excited by the story line. This book is pretty advanced for average 2nd graders, lots of big words, full of Greek words because it's fiction based off of Greek Mythology. So amazing though. Everyone looked just like I had always pictured in my head! Usually we do 1 chapter a night, but when we started reading The Lightning Theif, often we read 3 per night because he was BEGGING to see/hear more. We were SO EAGER to get our hands on the second one, and I was SO BUMMED that I could find it- as it turns out they didn't illustrate any further, the closes I can get are the graphic novels, AKA the comic book versions and it is just NOT the same thing. 😭 PLEASE DO THE NEXT BOOK EXPEDITIOUSLY!
