An absolute MUST for hot summer days
4 YEARUPDATE 2022: It's been 4 years since I've purchased this portable AC unit. I've been using it everyday, when it's not summer I simply use the built in fan for air flow when I'm working and white noise when I'm sleeping. When it's blazing hot during summer I have the unit blasting cool air in my home office while I'm working and when I am done for the day and want to chill outside of my office I can run my central air and save A LOT of money on my electric bill. This is an absolute must buy if you're looking for some AC relief without breaking the bank. I will without a doubt buy a brand new one the moment this thing breaks down on me but it's been going strong for 4 years now and I still can't see it breaking anytime soon! ORIGINAL REVIEW: The central air in my house is broken and it would cost me nearly $7,000 to fix it so I decided to pass and buy this portable air conditioner and it gets the job done for a far less price. It’s only been a couple of days since I’ve used this thing and it’s been a LIFE SAVER. It gets up to 110F where I am and this ac unit cools down my room within minutes! I set it to turn off after 1 hour to save energy. I don’t expect this thing to cool down my entire living room but I always go to my room after work and I’m satisfied so far. My only complaints is the less than helpful instruction manual to set this up but you can get an idea on how to install this thing from YouTube, my other complaint is that it’s fairy loud but honestly the benefit far outweighs the cons so it gets 5 stars in my book. I’ll be sure to update my review if I encounter any problems, but as of now I’d highly recommend this unit if you want to beat the summer heat every year. UPDATE 08/19/18: It has been about 2 months since I’ve bought and used the unit now and I still stand by what I said about this device, it is a LIFE SAVER! My area has been consistently hot all summer with temperatures ranging from 99F - 107! And not once did I ever feel the summer heat indoors. This was definitely worth the purchase and is an amazing investment for future summers to come. UPDATE 05/17/21: It has been 3 years since I’ve owned this portable air conditioner and I firmly believe this is by far one of my greatest investments. It has reached upwards of 119 degrees where I live over the past 3 years of owning this AC unit and it’s been a LIFESAVER. I do not regret buying this and I can say with full confidence I would immediately buy a new one should this one fail; as things stand however, I don’t see it failing anytime soon!

A Lifesaver When Coming Home from Work
This was a big purchase for me. I have never owned a portable AC, and I didn't know what to expect. Reviews ranged from adoration, to loathsome, and I was nervous when I clicked the confirm order button. Let me assure you who are reading this that this was probably my highest rated purchases on amazon. My living condition is an upstairs loft in SoCal. It is a small, studio-sized room with a bathroom. The temperature, untreated, would reach up to 89 degrees inside. I was in desperate need for relief, but still hesitated at the idea of this machine. I was afraid I would be getting a loud, unruly, ineffective appliance that would plague my days to come. All these fears were blown away by the crisp, cool air this thing pumps out on the regular. Shipping -- Timely, and damage free. Instructions -- Clear and easy Setup -- Window installation may take some patience, but with minimal effort, it can be done in no time. (Remote even came with batteries included!) Cleaning -- I have not had to drain the reservoir or vacuum the filter for months now, but I could do so easily. (Shouldn't put it off, I should say) Sound Level -- If you keep it next to your bed, the sound could prove to be a hindrance, after hours. However, I keep mine at the window opposite my bed, and it still keeps the whole room cool, while I sleep in peace with barely a hum to be heard. Speaking of which... Sleep Mode -- This mode lowers the set temperature by 1 degree every hour. After 6 hours it returns to normal settings. (The lights even dim on the display! I like my room dark when I sleep, so this tiny feature was noticed, and appreciated. Commendable design feature.) Separate Modes -- Fan Mode: This mode turns the appliance into a normal household fan, with low / medium / high settings. (Again, the display is noteworthy for its easy-to-read level indicator.) Good for when you want to keep a cool room cool longer, and the output is impressive. Dehumidifier mode: I think this feature is great, but I haven't used it much. Dry climate and all. Remote -- can work in direct line-of-sight all the way across my room. Internal display is handy. Display is simple, so batteries last a long time. No issues. MAX Mode -- This is when you need immediate relief. Fortunately, this appliance can dole it out at the push of a button. Max keeps the AC on no matter what with fan speed adjusting as needed. I cannot count the number of times I walk in from a long, hard day at work and immediately search for the max button on the remote before I even drop my pack. (As Emperor Palpatine would say, "Unlimited power!!!") Timer -- This feature is hands-down my favorite part of the whole deal. You can set the AC to come on, at a preset temperature, anywhere between 1 and 24 hours. MAGNIFICENT! I set the timer for 75 degrees and nine hours before I leave for work at 5 in the morning. When I get home after 2, the machine is on diligently bringing the temperature back down from the afternoon highs. This saves electricity (those wanting to save money) and by extension energy (for all those wanting to go green, of which I was one), and keeps the room cool when you actually need it to be cool, even if you left the house/apt. ALSO, the timer can be set to turn the AC off (1-24 hour interval again). This is perfect for sleep mode on average-temperature days, or when you leave in the middle of the day, and want it to turn off when the sun goes down. And the display (I really love the display) gives you a little blinking dot at the bottom corner of the screen to let you know for sure the timer is on; this is great for self-doubters like me. (ME: Did you get that AC? 9 hours, okay? AC: I got it, bro, no worries.) All in all, I have a total of ZERO complaints about this appliance. If you are shopping for a portable AC, and are nervous about the reviews you see on all the listings like I was, I whole-heartedly recommend this product for a worry-free buy. Black+Decker, you rock, and thanks!

but we have very high humidity here and for the last few weeks my room has felt like a sauna even at night
I purchased this for my bedroom since our central ac went out. Just got it hooked up, so can't review durability. I usually don't get home from work until the sun has gone down, but we have very high humidity here and for the last few weeks my room has felt like a sauna even at night, consistently hanging out around 80-85° no matter what. I've had this a/c running for about an hour now and I'm actually COLD...it feels so great! It's not super quiet but it's not obnoxiously loud either; not much louder than the fans I've been running for the last month. Basically sounds the same as any other air conditioner unit, which is to be expected and is definitely worth it to me. There's a slight rattling sound which might be because it's on carpet and isn't 100% level, but it isn't bad. The only complaint I have is the window installation kit (like many others I've read on here). I just bought my sister a different LG portable ac unit a week or so ago for her birthday, and that one came with different sizes so it could be easily adjusted to fit any window. This one either fits exactly, or you have to cut the extension (the instructions recommend using a saw) otherwise it will block the hole. Since I didn't have a saw handy, I had to get creative...it's not pretty, but I made it work! **Edit - I forgot to mention that I am not a fan of the touch controls on the top. My cat keeps walking on it and turning it off. Mostly just an annoyance, but wish there were some way to disable it. Update: Purchased in May and now almost September. Have used this all summer, have not had any problems and has kept my room cold. The LG unit my sister has in her room blows air still but barely cools at all now. I'm so glad I bought this.

Don't buy this AC
I purchased the 10,000 BTU version of this on June 12, 2023. I like my office being colder than the rest of the house, so I thought that this would be an ideal purchase. On July 20, 2023 I noticed that the unit would beep twice and shutdown for no apparent reason. It would run for an hour and then shut off. I ran through every troubleshooting theory I could think of: check the water tank, clean the filter (it wasn't dirty), try a different location to rule out ventilation issues (single hose AC unit so it creates a vacuum and needs proper ventilation to take in the warm air in the room), and a different outlet. After doing all of these things, the problem still occurs. I reached out to BLACK+DECKER for warranty information as it is clear this is a defective unit and I received this email back - **We want to apologize for the inconvenience that you are experiencing with your Portable air conditioner. I will be happy to assist you. The product you are referring to is handled by a specialized team. They would handle all inquiries requesting warranty, literature, or replacement parts regarding this product. I would also like to provide you with their direct contact information for future reference. Here is the contact information: W Appliance Edit: Amazon won't let me post their company phone number Edit: Amazon won't let me post their company email address (Equity Brands email)** After being provided with this information, I thought that it was odd that the email domain "equitybrands.com" was different from the company name "W Appliance." I researched both of the names only to find out that they're the same company, except "equity brands" has such poor reviews with the BBB that they registered themselves under a different company name "W Appliance" which, unsurprisingly, has just as many negative reviews on BBB, Google, Reddit, and a few other review based platforms that I discovered. It seems W Appliance/Equity Brands has a history of taking possession of products to fix/replace and then never sending the repaired/replaced unit back. Additionally, I saw several reviews of people reporting their unit has been in the process of being "repaired" for over 2 years without being fixed/replaced. After the extensive research I've done to determine if it would be worth me contacting BLACK+DECKER's "specialized team" per the abundance of negative reviews, I've concluded that it would be less of a headache to simply buy a new product from a reputable brand such as Whynter, which I've used in my garage for 4+ years without any issues whatsoever. Very disappointed to see how poorly the quality of BLACK+DECKER products have become.

This Portable Air Conditioner Works for me....
I am going to tell you my rating first then give the reason for my rating. This is my rating system, I gave 5 stars, for me because I feel the Black and Deck portable air conditioner is Exceptional and I would reccomend this product for someone who need this if they don't have or can't use a window unit for whatever reason. I received my unit yesterday, cause was in need of a portable air conditioner cause I live on a 2nd floor,1 bedroom apartment. It took me literally 15-20 minutes to install. You have to vent the exhause hose, which is easy to connect to the back of the unit and the other end you have connect the other end and vent out your window. I am not that mechanical and I did it. I had to cut it a little bit to fit my window and that was it. So pretty easy to install. After I installed and turned on the unit, took merely minutes to get the room cool. When I first read other peoples reviews of the noise level that this would make and thought if I run it at night, it is not that bad for me for sleeping. I ran the machine all day yesterday and set up a timer for the unit to shut-off at a certain time during the night and slept pretty comfortable with noise level didn't really bother me. I was sleeping and had the unit on medium or high setting. I am so used to the noise that I actually woke up. All in all good unit to have. That is why I gave it a high rating. I hope this helps.

Solid
I bought this back in June of 2023, and it’s been with me to over three different apartments, and I’ve only used it for the AC setting, and it’s been perfect. I don’t think it goes below 65 degrees, but for every bedroom I’ve been in, it makes it freeze. It’s not powerful enough to completely cool a 500sq ft apartment imo, but it can make it drop a few degrees if you’re trying to cool a space that big, just not below 70 degrees. Very easy to use. I like it.

Worked great but didn't last long
I got this air conditioner back in early summer 2017. It ran great, got my small studio apartment well cooled in a short period of time. It's not quiet but it's not the loudest AC unit I've ever heard either. The window/hose situation was probably the one thing I would say isn't great, I ended up having to duct tape the hose on both the machine and window panel side because it just didn't want to stay "clicked" in to the plastic fittings. I've read lots of reviews about other portable AC units where the window mount and/or hose are much worse than that, so I'd only take about one star off for that. Definitely the machine uses energy but the bills in the heavy use months weren't double or anything. Probably would've given this a 4 star rating prior to a few weeks ago... A few weeks ago (end of July 2021) it was running one night, began to make a loud clicking noise, flashed "LT" on the LED screen, and after that never ran cold air again. "LT" is supposed to mean that the coils have frozen over and just need to defrost. This is not something that had ever happened before. That night I turned the machine off for 8+ hours to see if the coils would defrost then, it was definitely warm enough that they should have, but I don't think that was actually the issue. Also spent a lot of time trying to open up the machine as much as one can and making sure there was no ice, or dust or dirt buildup, there was not. The machine does run its motor when in the AC mode now, but even after some time there is just not that refrigerant-generated cold air, it's just more of a strong fan. Not worth it to run all that energy for just a strong fan. After checking around, I discovered that there aren't any repair places in my area (Seattle) that handle this type of machine. And trying to DIY repair it is not reasonable for an average person who doesn't have time, engineering/repair skills, and specific tools. So this is just something that I have to replace. Maybe one day some brand will make a model that can be repaired easily and safely, or maybe more repair techs will catch on and open up their doors for people who would rather repair than replace. Not sure how long the average portable AC unit lasts, would love to see some statistics on that now that so many people in places without built-in AC are now buying units like these. But thinking that I'm going to have to pay $300-$500 every 4 years to replace these machines is tough to stomach. Not to mention disposing of it responsibly, these things should not go straight to landfill. Maybe I got a lemon and they last longer - here's hoping that's true while I shop for my next one.

A happy customer
Seems to work as advertised. Very happy! I just received my second one for the bedroom. I'm looking forwards to using the two units only next summer. I believe I will save substantial dollars next summer.
