Excellent product!
This is my first push mower and I’m very pleased with the results. We have a smaller heard, front and back combined probably around 3,000-3,500 sqft. It was time for me to take over the yard maintenance from our gardeners (longer story here...) so i started researching mowers. Having grown up with gas mowers, i always bought quality machinery (snapper toro etc). I looked into cordless tech, which is much more advanced from when i last researched the options. The reel technology intrigued me mostly in the difference between cutting versus tearing. The reduced carbon footprint, lack of need to store gas, and getting a bit of exercise (always a good thing) sold me. I did more research on reel mowers and also looked around for used ones on Craigslist. The Craigslist research tells me how well the various models hold up. It’s a great way to see if a manufacturer’s product falls apart after a few years. After much consideration i picked up this model from Great States. I have used it a few times and i must say I’m impressed. It assembled super easy, so easy a caveman could do it. It’s lightweight and easy to push around. It has several adjustments for height which is nice. The rollers have three settings and also the front wheels have three height settings. That’s a nice feature so you can dial it in for not only the height but also the composition of your unique lawn (hard pack, spongy etc). It was fun to fiddle around with the different adjustments and see the differences. The quality of the cut is noticeable. Very noticeable! I have a smooth even cut across the entire lawn, almost like a visit to the barbershop. I believe my lawn is going to looks great this summer and will be much healthier than before. Plus i will have earned my obligatory beer when I’m done too. While it’s more work than a deck mower, it’s not crazy like doing Insanity or plyo intervals. It’s a bit of a push but once you are moving the blades do most of the work. Finally, i picked up the Great States catch bag for clippings. That fit nicely and was easily installed. I use the bag most of the time. About every three mows, i let the grass clippings fall back into the lawn to help feed the grass like a mulching mower would. In summary i am very pleased with the reel technology over a deck mower and the quality-to-price for the Great States is unbeatable.

Adjusted great!
Works fine! I reverse lapped to get the weed mix cut cleaner. Tightened back to a slight tension for tight cut. It came with a thick red grease in gear and pawel area, and on wheel gear. But none on wheel axel. I added lith grease to axel and a spray lith to bearings. Now it flows smooth enough for 74 yr. Old wife to use round about her garden! I mowed easily around large yard. Not cutting 6 inch plantain stems so well, but still just buzzing along. I can trim under truck n trailer field parking areas now. Rider 42 inch johndeere was way to big n clumsy to get close to corners. Reel mower18 inch can chomp away at tall, thick grasses. Not for sticks tho, just use foot to reverse blades to free up wood. Lol.Too much fun for old couple. Like the good old days singing accross the yard! I red taped flat bar to mark 2 inch overlap for old eyes. Flip handle over to push around without turning blades for easy jogging to lawn! Fun!

Works well, but you have to mow twice sometimes
I bought this mower four years ago and have used it weekly during the growing season since then on our small lawn (about 1200 square feet) and sometimes also on a larger lawn that's twice as big. It's easy to maneuver and lightweight and it's really nice to avoid the hassle of getting gas and oil and trying to start a gas mower. It's also not heavy like a gas mower. Pushing the mower isn't very difficult and it's good exercise. One disadvantage compared to a gas mower is that it doesn't cut out to the wheels, so you have to trim more around fences and the like. The mower has to be sharpened about once a year using valve grinding compound which can be ordered on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HBM80M). It's about an hour-long procedure that involves removing the wheels, swapping two gears from side-to-side, adjusting the reel in relation to the cutting blade, and putting valve compound on the blades before pushing the lawnmower backwards on your driveway or patio. It's not very hard to do, and instructions are in the manual that comes with the mower or that can be downloaded her. It's also sometimes necessary to adjust the cutting blade in relation to the reels if the grass isn't cutting very well. The only really bad thing is that you often have to go over a section of the lawn twice because not all the blades of grass get cut the first time, especially if you haven't sharpened in a while or if the cutting blade is out of alignment. I skipped sharpening last year, and by the end of the second year, it was skipping many blades of grass, but now that I have sharpened it again, it's working much better. I had to glue on the foam handles, since they kept moving. The lawnmower is very quiet, so you don't have to worry about using it early in the morning or late in the evening. I would buy it again if my old one stopped working, but it's a very uncomplicated machine that seems well-built, and I'm not expecting that to happen soon.

Very pleased with this mower! Great quality! Bought an extra!
Awesome lawn mower! I am thrilled to go back to basics and get rid of the loud gas mower that is hard to start! This one runs on my calories, no pollution, and is nice and quiet, meaning I can mow any time without worrying about making much noise early or late. It is also much easier to move around from front yard to back yard. One time I even carried it through my house for a shortcut! Ha! Yes, it has a hard time cutting tall grass but I find that going more slowly, and maybe doing half the blade part on the tall grass and half on the cut grass makes it more doable. Also change the blade setting to higher if needed. It is not a heavy mower but in thick grass going uphill it is a little bit of an effort. It also does not like any form of twigs or clusters of thick grass, and you may want to use an edger or weedwacker, too, if you want a crisper edge. I have a small handheld electric trimmer I use for edges. My lawns look so good now, and it will be easier to mow next time as long as I don't let the grass grow too tall again. Assembly of the mower was a little confusing. I could not tell if the handle part was to slant down or up. Dah, it goes up! Drawing in manual was not good. Also, put the lower part of the handle on the wheel part first! Instructions say to do it last. It was still not easy, but it would have been harder if the rest of the handle was attached to that wheel part. The tricky thing is to get the bottom part of the handle squeezed into place between the wheels. I have arthritis and it was hard to use enough strength to squeeze it so it would snap into place on the metal peg. I found that putting the wheel part on its side made it easier, so I could just push it into place, what was now at the top when the thing was on its side, so do the lower part first when it is on its side. No screws required there. A few other screws to secure the handle parts, but that was easy. I am super pleased with this mower. It reminds me of my dad mowing with a manual mower like this back in the 70s. Yeah, maybe a little harder but it has so many advantages, too. Sometimes we need to go back to basics. Big, loud, heavy, polluting lawnmowers are gross when you think about it. I see more and more neighbors using these old school mowers. Love it. And you can buy a blade sharpener for this mower, which I plan to do, so we can use it for a loooong time. I think it will last. Great quality. Just avoid running the blades into rocks and branches too much. It may dull the blades and makes it hard to push through. UPDATE: I love this mower so much that I bought a second one! I will keep the second one on another part of my property so I don’t have to move them around too much. But they are lightweight enough to carry if you need to. Keeping them closer by near where they will be used will probably encourage me to mow more, which means my lawns will look neater. Don’t hesitate. Get this mower! And I am not getting paid to say this, lol! I am just a housewife and a mother on a mission to make my lawns look better, and now they do! Trying to keep up with all my neighbors’ beautiful lawns without hiring a gardener! This mower is for sure a good investment!

Great quality. Keep up with yard maintenance for best results.
Works great. Works best when you keep up with mowing, as it may just push over some grass instead if cutting it if its too high. Does not like sticks and rocks so either clearing those out or having a gas/electric mower on hand for those areas works best. I got this because i was tired if my electric mowers batteries dying all the time. Now i only use the electric for about 10% of my yard and this for the other 90%.

Decent mower, but two problems ...
This is a good mower, I had one problem with this mower and one with reel mowers like this in general, but that at the end. First off, if you get this with a fairly lush, green lawn, you're probably not going to be able to mow it on your first try, even at the tallest setting. This mower will choke on loose grass and long grass. I had to use my 2-stoke gas Ryobi weed wacker to basically mow the entire lawn first, then rake up all the loose grass, and then the mower still couldn't handle it. So I weed wacked it again, got it even lower, raked up all the loose grass, then this mower could handle it, again, at the tallest setting. The whole thing took me about four hours of very difficult work. Now that the lawn is short, I plan to mow it every week with this mower, so that I can avoid that happening again. And unlike a rotary mower, you'll need to either hand trim or weed wack the edges if you are near stone, because that reel mower can't cut that kind of uneven grass well, or at all. If you're buying this mower because you want a cheap way to cut your grass, just invest in an electric or gas mower, you'll almost definitely pay for this in the long run. But if you want it because it's quiet easy to use on a well-prepared lawn, then it's good. Now, a minor problem ... the top tubes that they used are relatively thin wall, and one bent on me, first time out. Nothing major, I was able to bend it back, but this mower hates to be torqued around corners. If they had gone just a little bit thicker wall on the tube handles, then this would have been a better product. I get that they want the light weight, but most of the weight is the base, not the handles anyway. Next, a bigger problem ... if you're buying this thing because you want to help save the planet with a green mowing technique, then I have news for you, this 'aint it! The problem is that even on the highest setting, this cuts the grass very short. If you like that golf course look to your lawn, okay, but that too short lawn is going to lose water and moisture a LOT faster than a slightly taller lawn. So sure, you'll avoid burning gas, and you won't have to deal with an electric cord, but your lawn will need more water. If you live where there is a lot of water like Indiana or Ohio or NY State, etc., then no problem. But if you live in California, Colorado, Florida, Texas, Arizona, etc., where water is expensive, and scarce, then this reel lawn mower will probably cause more environmental cost in spent water than it will save in gasoline or electricity. The increasing reality is that electricity is being made cleaner and cleaner, but water is getting more and more threatened. If you want to really save money and help the environment, then save money on your watering bill too ... get yourself a little electric rotary mower, be careful not to run over the cord, set the height as high as you can, and let the lawn do what it wants to do, which is hold onto its water by shading the soil with longer blades of grass. I already bought this one, but I regret not just getting an electric with a grass catcher. One last thing that they could have done to make this a better mower is allow a higher cut height. I'm not sure how they could have done that with the back roller setting the height, but I can't imagine that it would have been a terribly difficult engineering problem.

Easier, cheaper, lighter weight and smaller storage space than a lawn mower.
Easy to assemble. Have already used to cut yard once. The areas being cut are mixed vegetation and fairly level, yard has never had sod put down, so cut is relatively uniform but not a "golf course" lawn cut. Suits my needs - I do not maintain a "lawn". I do have a 40' x 20' section I keep cut for access to storage building and grassy area for dogs, plus a path around and through the remainder of lot I am naturalizing with native grasses, flowers, shrubs, vines and small trees. Raking area to be cut first will save you time as sticks will jam the reel (easy to remove, just takes a second, but can cause stops and starts.) Love that I don't have to buy fuel for it and I don't have to worry about recharging a battery. Lightweight, takes up less room than a lawn mower to store.

Easily the worst purchase I have ever made
After selling our house and moving into a rental property, my wife and I decided we would maintain the lawn ourselves while on the hunt for a new house. Trying to save money, we thought it would be FUN to purchase one of these "lawn mowers," especially based off of the amazing reviews. The "mower" arrived, we quickly assembled it, and we were excited to test it out. Almost immediately, that excitement turned into frustration which turned into pure hatred, and here is why: 1. If you have ANY twigs (a twig is a very SMALL version of a stick), let alone any sticks, this "mower" will constantly jam when they get into the blades. Most houses with lawns have trees and therefore have twigs. The smallest of the small twigs will jam this thing to a screeching halt, which is incredibly annoying when you are moving at a relatively quick pace and all of a sudden seemingly feel like you just slammed into a wall. 2. Most lawns have a few weeds and/or random tall blades of grass. This mower will not, I repeat, will NOT cut tall grass or weeds. The grass needs to be shorter than the height of the blades, or it will not go into the blades to get cut. There is nothing EASY you can do to cut medium to tall grass with this "mower." So, once you finish "mowing," the taller weeds and grass blades stick out like a sore thumb and basically negate everything you just did. 3. If you want your yard to even look semi-cut, you need to cut the same areas a minimum of three times. The "mower" is seriously that inconsistent and bad. If you did one pass on your entire lawn with this "mower," I assure you, it will look absolutely terrible. So, for those giving this product 4+ stars, I have to assume the following: They have zero twigs or branches in their yard, they have very short grass and no weeds, they have the smallest yard known to mankind, such as a yard no bigger than if you laid down on the snow and did a snow angel, they have never used a real lawn mower that actually cuts all forms of grass and weeds (tall, medium, short), especially on the first pass, they are likely hippies who refuse to use a gas alternative and thus will rate even the worst product known to man a 4 or 5 to promote "saving the environment", they have nothing better to do than to spend 5 hours, every 3 days, mowing a small yard, baking in the sun, and still only getting a cut that would be rated 7 out of 10 at the best, and/or they are simply in denial of being duped into buying such an absolutely terrible product. I honestly would not wish one of these "mowers" on my worst enemy. Please, somebody out there who is reading this review and wondering if they should make the switch from a gas mower to one of these piles of junk, DON'T DO IT!

Great lawnmower
We are very satisfied with the lawnmower. After spending some time assembling it and understanding how it works, we have gotten very comfortable with it. Compared to the ones we have had previously, this one is definitely more effective and very easy to use.
