Does this require the color control gx module?

It does not, but the Color Control Gx make interacting with the unit simpler. A smart BUS dongle or Venus Gx are good alternatives when on a budget. The dongle's con is its limited range and the Venus needs a connection to the internet so you can interact with it as it lacks a screen. With the Venus you can connect to it using wifi from a device but the range is limited as well.

How many lithium batteries can this comfortably charge? trying to figure out right number so don't get to many to optimize 5000 chrg capacity

The onboard charger can output 70amps. If you have a battleborn 100aH battery at full rated discharge it would take 1.42 hours to charge it. You had two batteries it would take 2.84 hours and so on. (Add 10% to all times for inefficiencies).

If i purchase two of these can they be configured for 240 volt split phase without using a transformer?

Yes they can, connecting it to your existing grid fed home may require the transformer...
