Is this good to use for lubricating a rectal thermometer for a newborn baby?

No. Stay away from this stuff. Not lubricating. Its sticky and thick and has no viscosity. Like toothpaste. Ask doctors pediatricians for what to use.

Returned it. The bacteriostatic agent in Surgilube is chlorhexadine, which causes resistance in some bacteria to some antibiotics. Here's what I found on Reseachgate: "With chlorhexidine a new resistance was often found to ceftazidime, sulfamethoxazole and imipenem (eight species each) as well as cefotaxime and tetracycline (seven species each)." The article recommends other agents: "No cross-resistance to antibiotics has been described after low level exposure to ethanol, propanol, peracetic acid, polyhexanide, povidone iodine, glutaraldehyde, and hydrogen peroxide." I'm using Argentyn 23, a silver solution that causes no cross resistance. That with a traditional lubricant. If you need a bacteriostatic agent, I suggest you look elsewhere.

yes, it is. That is why I bought it, to use on my sounds. It does the job quite nicely.
