A huge upgrade for your camera. Could be better.
I bought this mic to go with our Kodak Zi8 pocket video camera to record our meetings. Our group needs to set the camera on a tripod about 15 or 20 feet away from the person at the podium, and that means the sound from the Kodak's built-in mic was seriously lacking. I had been using a Shure SM48S with an XLR cable into one of those bulky XLR-to-quarter-inch adapters into a mixer and out to the camera via an RCA-to-3.5mm TRS. I bought the Sony mic because it would eliminate the need for all that equipment, and make everything easier to set up.This Sony mic did just that. All you have to do is plug it in and turn it on. The sound is natural, a huge improvement over the camera's built-in mic. The 90° pick-up angle setting is a perfect balance between the person at the podium and the audience. You don't even need a mic stand. You can just pop it into the little clip and set it on the conference table. The battery seems to last forever. (I forgot to turn it off after a meeting, and one week later, I didn't notice a difference.) The cable is attached, so you can't lose it. And this mic is affordable. Now the downsides: Since it's a stereo mic, Sony has decided to make the body somewhat V-shaped so it only fits into the provided mic clip. This ensures that you're always recording left and right, not tabletop and ceiling. That's a good thing. But that also means the mic won't fit into any other standard clip, and the clip provided doesn't fit into any standard mic stand. You're stuck with either setting the mic on a flat surface, or shoving the end of the mic clip into another mic clip on the stand (what we've done). The attached cable is only 5 feet, so we're using an extension cable which introduces a high-pitched noise that I have to process out of the recording later. There is not a lot of gain with this Sony mic. Our old Shure took time to set up, but it produced nice, quiet recordings. Basically, I've traded set-up time for post-production time. The Sony's on-off/pattern selector switch blinks only briefly when you turn it on. That feels odd, like maybe it's not really turned on.I would imagine a better choice for us would have been the Audio Technica AT2022, but that one costs over $250. (Any problem can be solved with more money, right?)If you're looking for an upgrade over your camera's built-in mic, and the mic can stay within 5 feet of your camera, and you don't have a lot of money, I'd say you could do much worse than this Sony mic.

Does exactly what it needs to.
I use it to record video on my Nikon DSLR, and it does a good job at that. I bought it because it was an inexpensive stereo mic and was recommended to my by a friend.

Wrong cable
Before buying this microphone I had already the same. I was surprised when I hot this second one because the cable was thinner but I did much pay much attention to it. I bought it "used like new" from PlusDigUSA in february. I've used it few times since. Now it doesn't work properly because of the cable, which causes noises if you touch it. So the cable that appears in this picture is not the cable I got and the one I got is thin and fragile.

Excellent Microphone
I replaced the same model from a microphone I bought 10 years ago. It produces excellent sound. I use it with a Sony Walkman and record on mini-disks. The acoustics give you the experience of being in a full spaceous room of sound, esp. when recording music. I highly recomment it!

I have used mic from Sony for over 20 years. Brands like Shure are fine and well nut it is how you use the mic. You need proper equipment if you recording or using it for live sound. A filter for the S's and B's sounds is important. A proper mount to keep a steady and static free space. If you just pull it out of the box and set it on table or carry it in your pocket of course it is going to sound shotty. I have used 10 of these to mic a drum set and two amps. Sounds great, just learn a little before tearing into it.

Buyer Beware!
As with every other Sony product I've encountered, this mic is worthless. It is almost new, has barely been used and just decided to mysteriously stop working one day for no apparent reason. Not even the IT Dept can figure out what happened. I shouldn't be too shocked though, after owning a $2,000 custom Sony laptop and a Sony digital camera, both of which just stopped working for no reason only one year after I purchased them, I've come to realize that Sony is the ABSOLUTE WORST company to buy electronics from. Never again. We can only hope for the customer's sake that they go out of business very soon and stop ripping people off with overpriced electronics that are worth about as much as this dog poo on the bottom of my shoe.

Just the job
I have a Sony hand held recorder (DCM-10, from memeory) and have been using some cheap microphones up to now. As the last one broke, I decided to get a decent mike and as the recommded one is no lonnger made and I couldn't find it cheap anyway, even on EBAY, I decided to try this one, which is it's replacement (Cheaper version)The microphone is incredible. It picks up sound really well and I have to turn the input volume right down on the recorder. The stereo is also really good and you can really hear where voices are coming from. There is an option to record in mono also. The quality is great, just what you expect from Sony and I'm sorry I didn't invest in this or it's predecessor sooner. The microphone comes with a table stand and the lead is equipped with a standard 3.5mm stereo jack. It takes 1 AA battery to power it and this seems to last a long time.Build quality is maybe on the cheap side, Plastic housing, which may not be as durable as the original metal one. Also, it means that it picks up far more hand noise so you really have to not move your fingers at all if using it that way or it will totally spoil the recording. Best option is to hold it using the stand (but still be very careful as it will pick up any slight movement of fingers on that too) or better still on a boom, if you can't put it on a table/other surface.Other than the plastic cover, can't recommend this highly enough.

Read the reviews before purchase
Believe the advanced amateur description. This is quite fussy over what portable digital recorders it will work with as well, not all have the pre-amps to cope. The best I have encountered so far is the Sony PCM-M10.As far as I am concerned this is representative of a lot of lower end sound recording kit. If you have a bit of experience, there is little problem, but if you are a beginner brought up on computers, smart phones and cameras, all of which will give you what you want with no real knowledge then its a bit pot luck if you will be happy with your purchase. Certainly there is nothing on the package that would any newbie any clues to what it is best used for. To be fair Sony do provide technical info, but that is only useful if you understand it.

Excellent microphone
A very fine piece of kit. I have already made a couple of excellent recordings to my minidisc recorder and the results are very pleasing. I would thoroughly recommend this product. Delivery was fast and the item was well packed.

Great item
This was an excellent item. I used this to record my vocal lessons when I was in university and it was a great help as IT was able to listen to my classes back.
