“Alain de Botton, one of our era’s most uncommonly perceptive, lyrical, and lucid existential contemplatives.” — The Marginalian Alain de Botton's redemptive volume - now in paperback - charts a course from collapse to recovery with kindness, compassion and wisdom. A Therapeutic Journey is a collection of essays about mental challenge and health. Written with kindness, knowledge and sympathy, it is a practical guide to well-being and a source of consolation and companionship in what might be some of our loneliest, most anguished moments. Alain de Botton explores how we can cope with a variety of forms of mental pain and illness, from the mild to the severe. It considers how and why we might become ill; how we can explain things to friends, family and colleagues; how we can find our ways towards recovery; and how we can build resilience, so as to live wisely alongside our difficulties. At heart this is a book about happiness - about regaining the thread of our lives, rediscovering meaning, and finding our way back to connection, warmth and joy. Review: Knowledge - Very insightful wonderful book. I have been a fan of this author for quite some time but had not read any of his books till this one. His wording/language was a bit hard for me to truly dive in. It was a little too detailed on some things but overall a great therapy book that explores lots of things. Review: nice book - this is a nice book is terms of cover. i bought this for a gift exchange. i read some of the passages before exchanging. really thoughtful and inciteful. I kind of want a copy of the book myself.

A powerful book after years of therapy
I fell in love with this book and have been going through it practically page by page with my therapist. I love it so much I've purchased copies for folks I know. It almost feels like the author was sitting like a fly on the wall for my tormented childhood. Lots of insights about why I feel the way I do and, more importantly, insights into how to talk to others about difficult topics.

Remarkable. Much gratitude to Alain for his work.
Compassion and psychological insight at its finest, with clarity and elegance in delivery. Intriguing stories of relation, with an incorporation of creativity and art as an avenue for the afflicted to express what they are going through. This book is like a kind friend that understands. Thank you for this and your other work.

Like a Warm Hug
This book addresses what we all know. Our mental health is on a pendulum and we all find ourselves in valleys in different phases of modern life. This book really de stigmatizes this truth and allows you to be okay with yourself and understand others with more compassion. Recommend!

Immensely valuable, staggeringly pithy
This is a book of great value, written carefully, lovingly. What De Botton has written is staggeringly pithy, so chock-full of wisdom, and sober but gentle truths, that I read and digested it only a few pages at a time. I had started to make notes and dog-ear the pages, but then it seemed my notes would become the entire book, and every page would have its corner turned over. Having read many similar works and done a great deal of the work, I can reverently say that Alain de Botton's "Therapeutic Journey" is a gem I hold dear.

Essential read for those with healthy mind!
Know the state of your mental wellness. Never underestimate the power of early childhood impressions on way you live ur life. Your defensiveness may have roots there. In relationships, its OK to show your displeasure and be vulnerable...boundaries help. Art over years has helped calm minds. It highlights the common things around us that give immense pleasure but go unrecognized...look at crushed pillow on ur bed after good night rest. At the same time modernity has many elements that provoke unrest unless one is mindful...meritocracy often leads to inference that those who are not successful are lazy or stupid, which is harsh untrue assessment. Book has several such beautiful lessons shared in digestible short chapters Must read
