Is this "Real" Damascus steel or just etched to look like?

Just got mine. It's what we call Damascus. Or welded pattern steel. Very well made.

Is the blade hardened and tempered?

It appears to have been given some hardening and tempering but what to what extent I can't tell. The dagger I received was very sharp, oiled to protect it against corrosion and is a very good to excellent quality blade and I'm thinking of ordering a 2nd 1.

Is it perfectly balanced?

It’s well-balanced well-constructed and very sharp. I would not say it’s “perfectly balanced.”

It is designed as a piercing weapon, not a slashing knife. The point is “sharp”. The spiral edges are not. “Poke them with the pointy end.”
