Does the large Vogue hold a Surface laptop (8 1/4 x 11 5/8)?

The padded compartment for the HIC11L Vogue Large is designed to hold a small tablet. You might be able to put the surface in the main compartment, but it won't fit in the tablet compartment. I would recommend the Ruby, the Kayla, or the Midway Relate as possible solutions.

Where is the laptop compartment? Is it on the back panel where it opens or against the front? Is there a zippered compartment in the main compartment?

The main compartment on the Vogue Large backpack is accessed by a U-shaped zipper on the back panel. When you unzip this, there is a padded compartment for a tablet (it may hold a small laptop depending on the brand) on the panel where it opens. The tablet will be against your back when you wear the backpack. On the opposite panel, there is a zippered pocket inside the main compartment. There is also one zippered pocket on the front exterior of the bag. Please review the photos on hedgren.com for more details.
