The pole and fish connect by magnet. This is a great game, probably the first that my kids could actually play. I think it helped them learn to focus, take turns, follow a protocol, etc.

Can a one year old still have fun with the game?

A one year old won't be able to follow the rules, but will enjoy "free play" with the sturdy wooden pieces. So yes, a one year old will have fun with it, just like he/she would with any wooden sea animal toys, but not in the sense of proper gameplay with rules. I would recommend hiding the games for a few months just about the child's second birthday and then take it out again when the child is old enough to understand the rules - this way the game will be fresh and interesting again when the child is ready to learn the "proper" game rules.
