Inspiring Adaptation of a Great Catherine Cookson Novel.
Catherine Cookson wrote a great deal about underprivileged and/or misfit girls who, after many trials and tribulations, win through in the end. The Round Tower is an excellent example of her genius for this kind of writing, which has adapted so very well to TV dramatisation. Sometimes with these kind of adaptations, although we watch them and enjoy them, we often feel that we wouldn't want to watch them again for a long time. Not so with Catherine Cookson, who for me is very 'more-ish' and this adaptation of The Round Tower is a good example of that.I expect it's just my imagination, but I always get the impression that the actors in these Catherine Cookson are truly enjoying what they are doing. Cookson certainly has it in for snobs, exploiters, crooks, self-righteous sanctamoniacs, racists, mean spirited miseries and so on. In everyday life we meet people just like her characters. This adaptation stars Emilia Fox, Keith Barron, Jill Halfpenny, Jan Harvey and Isabelle Amyes and it's among the best, most watchable of all the Catherine Cookson adaptations. There are some who would say that these adaptations will appeal to women more than men, but I think men are missing out on a great deal if they scoff at this kind novel writing and/or dramatisation. One of the truly wonderful things about female writers is that they enable men to see men through the eyes of a woman, which is immensely helpful and is very much what we have here in this excellent adaptation of The Round Tower.

very good
Very enjoyable and a good story. But a shame two members of the cast over acted Angus's mother and sister who were both totally over the top but all the other main characters were excellent.

Wonderful Story
Catherine Cookson - The Round Tower [DVD] [1998 ]This is a wonderful story, one of the best Catherine Cookson has written. The cast is stellar & it will certainly be watched over & over again. The period costuming & the social restrictions in those days are quite accurate. Any Catherine Cookson fan will certainly wish to have this DVD.
