Great gadget, well-designed, solid and delivers impressive sound
After much deliberation between this and the Bose equivalent, I ordered the JBL Charge. After an initial listening test, I was hooked - it's now an essential item on any trip. Plenty else has been said by other reviewers about the sound; suffice to say the thing packs a punch especially with mid-range vocals. The neatest thing about the Charge is the design. The unit feels solid and hardy. It has a profile similar to a beer can, so fits in cup holders perfectly. Great if you're in a car that doesn't have bluetooth or an audio input. It sounds best laid down flat on a hard service, but can also be stood on its end. One of the ends has a grille for the ported speaker driver, the other has the USB port for charging other devices. The Charge's portability is great, particularly compared to the Bose soundstation which seems a lot larger for negligible performance benefits. Being able to charge from micro USB is a small feature but I find it a huge benefit. Going anywhere, I can just take one 2A charger for the Charge and for my phone instead of having to remember yet another generic charger. Ideal as a gift for music lovers. Highly recommended.

Good portable speaker...
After doing a bit of research I finally decided on this JBL speaker - mainly because of its sound quality and price. It is nearly half the price of the Bose speaker, and I reckon sounds just as good! While it may lack a bit in thumping bass, for good all round performance I would highly recommend this speaker, especially if you have a wide taste in music like myself, this fits the bill perfectly. I don't think spending twice as much on the Bose you would be getting double the sound quality. JBL make really good speakers and this certainly doesn't disappoint. We even did a blind listening test with a Kenwood portably speaker and this was definitely clearer and more detailed (for such a small speaker), but not as bassy. Remember, this is only a small speaker, so is only designed for smallish rooms, ie. bedrooms, lounges etc., or taking away on holiday. What is also good about this speaker is its portabilty - it can be laid down flat, or stood upright. Whilst doing some small jobs around the house it was great just to be able to pick up the speaker and carry it around wherever I went (when using my mobile phone as the bluetooth music source). This speaker represents really good value for money, and would therefore highly recommend it. Really pleased with this purchase.

Not quite as loud as the JBL Flip but a great little device.
Fabulous little gadget although have to say the instructions are next to useless. Got it out of the box and paired it to the first thing that came to hand without a hitch - simplicity itself but when I tried to pair it to the actual device that would be its permanent partner no joy. Diagram indicates that you have to hold down on/off button for 3 secs doesn't tell you, you need to turn it on first and then hold it down - (actually the instructions don't tell you anything). Even their customer support chappie didn't explain this clearly and suggested I had a faulty machine. Anyway just packing up to return it as advised when I accidentally sussed it out. The only reason I haven't given this 5 stars (and perhaps a little unfairly) is that compared to the JBL Flip it isn't quite as loud - all about the volume for me). Although there probably isn't a lot in it, it is discernible. That said, the sound is richer and more rounded on the Charge. I say perhaps an unfair comparison as you do get so much more compared to the Flip (which is about 20% smaller in size) in terms of battery life - up to 12 hrs on the Charge compared to the Flip's 6hrs and the ability to charge other devices from it which you can afford to do given the extended battery life (hence the name JBL Charge). All in all extremely delighted, only wish it was as loud, if not a little bit louder than the Flip.

Bass Rattles - Engineers Ears
If you want some sounds blasting out from your hoody front pocket as you ride your bike it's perfect. Portable definitely, For its size its better suited to lower volumes as at higher volumes it excels in treble, delivers good punchy mids but slightly lower low end as expected for its size, not bad though, shame bass rattles on Source Direct - Concealed Identity, great shame, construction just not tight enough housing for me, bass rattles even on the intro, WAVs and 320kbps Stereo MP3 bass set to 0 and treble 0, Bluetooth and wired from Cowon D2+, Rooted Samsung with Voodoo DSP sound, checked output was not distorting alongside AudioTechnica ATH-M50's headphones, it was fine, not bad for its size though, but sure the Bose will have a tighter packed unit, in fact I tried the Sony bluetooth speaker at £79 (was £130) and its bigger, heavier speaker units not bad at all. Didn't test it with my tunes tho. Not bad JBL but not a keeper for me. 3.5stars

Excellent, better than the JBL Charge 2 for mobility
Beautiful little speaker. Very nice packaging - bought it as a gift; it's well presented. It feels very hardy with an all solid shell. Operation is simple and intuitive and pairing works reliably in seconds. The included neoprene case, plus the rugged deign, make this ideal for travel and carring inside a regular bag. The JBL charge 2 (the newer model) has some nice additional features, but bizarrely is designed to have very sensitive sides (which instructions advise must not be touched), and critically, no case either. JBL also don't sell a case separately, so if you intend to use this speaker portably, then the Charge 2 is really not an option. Especially strange as it's primary competitor is probably the Logitech UE Boom, which markets itself as being hard wearing and water and scratch-proof.

No Hesitation Required ----- I've done the homework !!
Folks, This will likely be the shortest review ever. I cannot emphasise enough how good this speaker is.... Just over the size of a can of coke.... What a sound...... 10-12 hours of battery life... Deep rich bass and works with all devices. Best speaker for the money by a long shot.. I picked up at £70 with 2 yr warranty, still worth £80-£90 in my opinion. Will fill any holiday room, beach, balcony, kitchen with splendid, long lasting sound. Great added feature of being able to charge your devices whilst it happily plays tunes. Supplied with UK and EU plug adapters, neoprene case and cable for charging. Without doubt, the best purchase I've made in a long time.
