Great sourdough shouldn't be a matter of luck. It should be a skill. One day you pull a beautiful loaf with a crisp, golden crust out of the oven. The next day, using the very same recipe, you spend hours mixing, folding, proofing, and baking... only to end up wondering what went wrong. After a few disappointing loaves, it's easy to think you're the problem. Most of the time, you're not. Most sourdough books tell you what to do. Very few explain why the same recipe works one day and fails the next. That's why every bake can feel like another experiment, and success often seems more like luck than something you can repeat. That's exactly why Artisan Sourdough at Home was written. Instead of overwhelming you with dozens of recipes from the start, this book helps you understand how sourdough really works first. You'll learn how to build and maintain a healthy sourdough starter, understand fermentation, recognize what your dough is telling you, troubleshoot common problems before they ruin a bake, and make confident decisions throughout the entire bread-making process. When you understand the process, the guesswork disappears. You stop simply following recipes. You begin understanding your starter, your dough, and why your bread turns out the way it does. Then you'll put those skills into practice with recipes that grow with you—from your first artisan loaves to sandwich bread, dinner rolls, baguettes, flatbreads, enriched breads, sourdough discard recipes, and homemade spreads. Whether you're baking your very first loaf or you've already made a few and want more consistent results, this book will help you build confidence, develop lasting skills, and enjoy baking sourdough again. Inside You'll Find: A complete step-by-step guide to creating, feeding, storing, and maintaining your own sourdough starter. Clear, beginner-friendly explanations of fermentation, hydration, flour selection, dough development, and the techniques that confuse most home bakers. A practical troubleshooting guide to help you understand what went wrong and how to improve your next bake. Recipes that grow with your skills, including artisan country loaves, sandwich bread, dinner rolls, baguettes, flatbreads, enriched breads, sourdough discard recipes, and more. A bonus collection of homemade spreads that pair perfectly with fresh sourdough bread. Flexible recipes for baking one loaf, two loaves, or larger batches. Practical tips to help you feel more confident at every stage of the baking process. Smart ways to reduce waste and make the most of your sourdough discard. Every recipe builds on what you've learned, helping you gain confidence and deepen your understanding with every bake. This is more than a sourdough cookbook. It's a practical guide that teaches you how to understand your starter, read your dough, solve problems with confidence, and keep improving every time you bake. The goal isn't simply to help you bake one beautiful loaf. It's to help you develop the skills that turn great sourdough into something you can bake again and again—not something you simply hope for. If you're looking for a beginner-friendly sourdough cookbook that teaches the fundamentals, builds lasting baking skills, and grows with you as your confidence grows, Artisan Sourdough at Home is the perfect place to start. Learn the fundamentals. Understand the process. Bake artisan sourdough with confidence. Great Bread and Baking Recipes
What a great gift for my mom, my mom loves baking bread and has been looking for new recipes. She is always telling me about the process including proofing and sourdough starter. After I read this book I felt much more well-equipped to speak with her about baking!

Looks nice, but lacks real substance
I regret buying this book—it feels very generic and low effort. The recipes are basic and nothing you can’t easily find online for free. All the images are AI-generated, which makes me question if the author actually made any of these. The writing also feels generic and not very authentic. There’s no real explanation of sourdough techniques or how things actually work. No images of the process either. It doesn’t teach you anything useful, especially as a beginner.

This book is great! It’s organized perfectly and the recipes! I’m thrilled to try some of these recipes. However I don’t agree that a starter can be established in 7 days. I also don’t think all the gadgets are necessary for a beginner but other than that this is a great option for a gift or just to get more information on sourdough.

Ma Baker would probably have been proud of me
When I was a boy of about five, I had an auntie. ‘Aunt Angelina’ had been a signals operator during WWII, and she’d retired to Neasden, where she’d become known locally as ‘Ma Baker.’ She was renowned for her bread, which she sold to people who came knocking at her door at odd hours. For a long time, I never saw any of that bread, but I did accidentally find out where she made it. One evening, she was chatting to my mother about someone called ‘Iron Lung Eddie’, who also made bread, and with whom she’d had a few ‘run-ins’, some of them (apparently) quite violent. Anyway, I went on an impromptu exploration of her house, and eventually, I found myself in the cellar. It was much bigger than I expected, and the glare of the arc lights almost blinded me. Aunt Angelina/ Ma Baker wasn’t very pleased. My mum gave me a right ear-bashing. But later, to cheer me up, I was given some of Aunt Angelina’s famous sourdough. Let’s just say, in the words of the cliché, it ‘blew my mind’. My God, I didn’t know bread could be this good! They told me there was a lot more where that came from if I just kept schtum about the bakery. Sourdough was a very intricate business, full of closely guarded secrets. Ever since, I’ve been on the hunt for sourdough books. This is an excellent one, and I’m really looking forward to using it. You could actually live on the recipes in here, plus water. I’m not joking: there’s actually a recipe for a topping called “‘Vitamin Bomb’ Herb Paste.” Leanna Yarson’s a genius. Anyway, I never did get any more of Aunt Angelina’s sourdough. She left Britain quite suddenly, just after Iron Lung Eddie was found floating face-down in the Thames. The Neasden bread operation was taken over by a chap called Knuckleduster Nobby, who – so it was said – ‘you didn’t want to mess with.’ So I never tasted any of his sourdough either.
