does this cut 8 ply mats?

Yes it will cut cotton based 8 ply mats, but you will go thru more blades than if you cut foam core.

Whats the difference between 301-1 & this if you also buy the 701 straight cutter?

The 450-1 is a 40 inch mat cutter, the 301 is the most basic model, with only 32 inch capacity. Also, the 450-1 model has aluminum guide channels, a deluxe pull style bevel cutting head which is far superior, a 20 inch measuring bar with production stop, a squaring bar, and two additional production stops. Can you cut multiple openings in a mat board with this machine?

As long as your aim is good. It's a little tricky finding the start and end points with the beveled blade but it can be done.

Anyone else have accuracy & squaring problems? My dimensions are significantly off and the mats are not square. Checked with tape measure & square.

Glad you figured out the issue with your cutter. Now if you need to be precise you know the error to correct for. Label your cutter so you never forget. Also check accuracy every 10 or 20 mattes to ensure it does not repeat for any reason.
