For a field recorder, it gets the important things right
I needed a device to record interviews and events in the field. Although the camera mic is good, it picks up more me than the subject and ambient noise as well, making the final product very difficult to edit for clarity. This device you can ask a subject to hold it in their hand, and even if they scream over ambient noise, it doesn't distort or over modulate. Its quite impressive for the price. Its omni directional so you don't have to get precious about how they hold it either. And the sound quality is certainly good enough for most uses. The built in speaker is just to make sure the file is there. Don't judge it from that. The only tricky bit is knowing how to move a given file from the built in memory to a micro-sim so you can move it to your editing computer. But it has a built in USB 2 connector so you can move files right from the device as well. Not so useful once you have moved to USB C though. I have found this device to be MUCH more useful than similar ones costing hundreds. Mostly because the mic is omnidirectional, which for field interviews is much better than HQ mics which change volume when the subject moves their head a little.
