How do you remove the power cord from the bottom

You have to push in both read tabs on the very bottom and the cargo pop out from there

does this require a sugar based liquid or can i use diet sodas?

You can use any liquid. But it doesn't work like it says. It crushes the ice I about pea size pieces and stirs it with whatever liquid you put in. The ice floats on top like when you normally put ice in a drink, some of it melts into the drink and dilutes it, the rest floats on top. Got these as gifts for my son's and their families and was very disappointed. 

How well does it work?

Not at all like it states. It crushes the ice into a little larger than pea size and stirs it in whatever liquid you put in the pitcher. Save your money and buy a good blender.
