The bottom is 2 3/4 inches wide.

How thick is the stainless steel

It appears to be 18 or 16 guage, but i dont own a micrometer to check. Its thick enough to hold a full pan of mud w/o the sides bowing out.

What type of stainless steel is this? 304 or 316? Is it comsideyfood grade stainless?

It is not 304 or 316. It's could be the cheaper type of stainless steel 430 which is ferromagnetic which is still corrosion resistance. Marshalltown heli-arc welds seem to be the best I've found
