How to insure authentic Canon battery...
I have ordered this battery from Amazon, but also utilized price matching at my local store. I could use amazon's price and actually see the product for myself! WIN WIN situation! Based on other reviews for random batteries, it seems like you'll be gambling on receiving a 3rd party knockoff or an authentic Canon battery. I just want to say right away that the battery I received from amazon as a seller was 100% authentic. I had no problems with it and it was exactly the same battery received with my Canon T4i camera. I like to have back up batteries just in case something happens, but when I invested in a battery grip for this camera, I wanted to have 1-2 more on hand than what I already had. I went to my local store who matches prices on amazon as long as they are in stock on here and sold by amazon themselves. I was able to see before buying and make sure they were authentic Canon batteries and got it for the same price amazon offered which was the "best buy" for me ;) Saved about 40% from what the store wanted. I just wanted to write this review to offer some help to someone on the fence being nervous if they were gonna get a cheap knock off or not. This may be a solution for you. With all that being said, onto the battery. I prefer the authentic Canon batteries because they are the most reliable in my opinion. Sure they cost a bit more compared to the cheaper brands, but it's my preference and I have had no issues with Canon's batteries. The longevity seems great on a charge, and there hasn't seemed to be any downfall on shots per charge the whole time I've had this after many, many charges. I also recently got the 6D camera which doesn't take these batteries and invested in an additional LP-E6 for that from the local store just to be safe. Canon batteries to me are the way to go. If you wanna save on some money for camera items, pick something else... at least that's how I feel. I totally recommend this product, but like I said, make sure you are getting the real deal. Hopefully this review gives you some ideas on how to insure that happens.

Good Battery!
I ordered a battery from the vendor, Anatolian Book Store, and got a great battery. There is some truth here with some of the people who are complaining about getting knock-off batteries. However, some people are expecting the battery to look 100% identical to the one they received with their camera. The one I received is slightly different colored and says it was made in Japan. It was also in a package that has the sliding cardboard backing. Those elements don't make it a knock off. I have seen plenty of packages like this in retail stores. Normally if this is the case, the package may be stapled or in many cases, behind a counter. The fact that this one is made in japan or that it isn't the exact shade of color as the one that came with your camera, just means it was made in a different facility. Canon, doesn't just have one factory in the world. Now, some people are getting batteries without the Canon logo that say "battery for Canonn LP-E8". These are definitely third party batteries. If you get one, call Amazon and they will take it back. However, I believe a few people read some early reviews of people who actually received third party batteries, and thus they were looking for any indication that these aren't real. If you get one that has a slightly different color, slightly lighter writing, made in Japan, and in an easily opened package, don't just write it off. Try it out. Mine had all of those attributes, and it performs just like my original Canon Battery. If yours doesn't work, call up Amazon and they will take it back...they are generally very good about that.

8 months old results = Better than expected!
When my wife and I were reviewing batteries for her photography business, we decided to check out prices locally, online, and with other photography brands. When I was browsing these reviews, I noted which sellers were doling out the "genuine article" and we decided that the risk was worth it if they turned out to work. Their trial run was during an engagement shoot. The batteries showed up just fine on my wife's Canon T2i and the battery life was similar enough to the battery that came with hers. We have 2 of these and they both, when tested, performed admirably. I noticed that a few of the other 5 star reviewers mentioned some common sense protocols they took when ordering from other sellers, and I wanted to thank them for these warnings and also caution you to do the same. I always research the sellers online to see what kind of stuff they do at their sites and see if I can get as much info as needed before I pay them. Make sure you cross check the specs, and if possible get a clear idea of the product you're getting before your order. An ounce of preventions is worth a pound of cure!

OEM battery is worth the "extra" money
Bought as a backup for my T3i, and is OEM. Works jsut as well as the one that came with the camera. Not a whole lot else I can say about it. UPDATE 11-1-17 - Ok, so after owning this product for several years, I wanted to throw an update in the review on how it performs. I am still using this battery 5 years later, and it is still going strong. I have never done any kind of full out endurance test, but for a typically day of walking around taking photos, I usually don't have to worry about battery swaps. The camera I use this on, the T3i, I use mostly as a still camera, and take a few dozen to a few hundred photos in a single day. I don't use video much (almost never), so I can't speak for it's power for that, but I use live view a lot for landscapes, and the battery holds up great. I didn't even use my camera for 6 months (bought a new 80D), and when I finally did power it up again, the battery still had a charge on it! I wanted to give a more recent update on this, since most reviews for batteries are from people that have not had them long enough to really give a good commentary on the longevity of the battery. I think that when you put some good money into a good, OEM battery, you will get your money's worth from it. I did in this case. I have seen many a person buy a cheapo knock off, and rave about how great it is at first, but then a year later it won't hold a charge. This battery is still holding a charge just fine 5 years after I bought it. Skip the garbage, get the OEM.

A review of the *genuine* Canon battery
W. Stohler gives the Canon LP-E8 battery a very negative 1 star because he believes he received a fake. So, what's the one star for? He's not rating a genuine Canon battery if his allegations are true. But what should he have done? Maybe immediately contact Amazon to investigate? And return the fake? I doubt that Amazon would knowingly risk their reputation by selling fake Canon batteries. But in regards to off-brand vs. brand, over the past 25 years, I've never had an off-brand battery last as long as the genuine. Most notably, when I had two batteries for a Sony video camera, one off-brand and one genuine Sony, I found them together after not using them for about two years. The off-brand battery would not even charge, with the charger only flashing its red light. The Sony battery charged-up fully, and is still in use today. And, in another comment I wrote recently on a third party, LP-E8 battery I bought two months ago. When I attempted to charge it in the Canon charger, the charger continually flashed yellow. I placed it in the third-part charger, and it went immediately to green, though I knew it needed a charge. The third-party charger was questionable, too. Poorly made batteries can short inside, melt, and even start a fire. Camera manufacturers will not do warranty work on a camera than failed because of an off-brand battery being used. Will I try to always buy brand: yes. Will I fall for off-brand occasionally: yes, but primarily as back-up batteries that I would seldom use. I always recommend genuine batteries -- there are very sensitive electronics in that expensive camera of yours. If you suspect you got a fake, return it.

Never go back to unreputable cheap knockoffs again. Stick to genuine parts & accessories.
I purchased an after market dual battery pack and charger a year ago. It was poorly made and didn't last me more than a year. Both batteries show full charge but only lasted less than 10 minutes. It shows a full charge then after a few shots it completely shuts off. I will never make the mistake of ordering replacement parts from unreputable sources. The new Canon LP-E8 battery is the same exact model and battery type for my Canon T4i. Since purchasing it I have paired it with my original battery in a dual pack grip mount and it has lasted me hours without any problems. I would definitely purchase from this seller again.

Satisfied
I was initially skeptical about ordering batteries for my DSLR on Amazon after hearing about counterfeit concerns; however, this product arrived exactly as Amazon had described it, sealed in the retail packaging from Canon. I even scanned over the package and batteries with a blacklight to verify it was OEM, and sure enough their the Canon genuine signature was untampered with and clearly visible. I am convinced this battery is the genuine Canon LP-E8 battery that came with the camera and it works exactly like my original battery. Definitely worth saving the 30 dollars.

Appears To Be A Genuine Canon Battery... Have Yet To Find Out Though...
The battery that I bought is from Murphy's Camera. I debated for a long time whether I should risk the chance of getting a fake battery like the others, but in the end, I decided to go for the risk. When I got the battery, everything seems to be genuine, from the packaging to the lettering on the battery. The packaging is EXACTLY the same as the batteries I see at Best Buy and Future Shop (Canadian here). I have yet to test the battery to determine the authenticity of it though. Will update this review at a later time. =) Cheers! [Update July 24, 2011] Battery still seems to be authentic as the one that came with my T3i. The charge shown on the camera goes from 3 bars to 2 bars and then down to 1 bar. =) Very very satisfied with this purchase. Again, this battery is bought from Murphy's Camera.

Great Batteries!
The items arrived in what seemed to be legitimate packaging. They come with the orange clip-on cover and an instruction booklet. I charged them up fully before using them. These batteries seem to last as long as the original Canon battery that came with my DSLR. No issues with them, although I haven't used them extensively yet. Also, I haven't used them out in colder temperatures yet. So I can't comment on that. So far, so good.
