A journey, but in the end extremely satisfied!
I've had quite the journey with this unit! We live in a two story un-airconditioned house, and for years our summers have been miserable. After figuring out how to get a unit to work in one of our upstairs bedrooms (my office), we settled on this Whynter unit. It was easy enough to set up, and for the month that it ran, it kept our upstairs cool-ish. I wouldn't expect it to fully chill our upstairs as it is a big space, but it kept the temperature at a level where we were comfortable, which is a minor miracle. The unit is powerful and not overly loud. Now, the journey! After a month and a half our unit started making horrible noises, and it became clear something was very wrong. I worked with the support team, and eventually sent the unit back for replacement since we were in the warranty period. Jof, our Whynter rep, was very helpful and communicative. The only issue I had at first was that I didn't think I'd kept the box (we usually break them down quickly) and so figuring out how to ship this back seemed like a fools errand. Luckily my wife had stored it out of the way, and once I had it repackaged, it was easy to get it returned. My dearest advice, dear reader: SAVE THE BOX AND ALL OF THE SHIPPING MATERIAL FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN! Seriously. If something goes wrong you're going to want this box in particular. It is NOT easy to find boxes online which would work to ship this unit. So thanks to eh Whynter team we're back up and running, and no longer dying from the summer heat!

So Far, So Good
I just purchased this AC unit 10 days ago and have had it set up for around 5 days. So far it's working great. It wasn't too difficult to set up. Took around 10-15 minutes in total. It cools the room better than two 8,000BTU Honeywell units I had previously working in the same room. It can be a little noisy when it kicks in, but honestly not that bad, and often it's pretty quiet. I like that it comes with a remote and a cover. I was a little surprised they recommended changing the filter every two months. That seems a little excessive unless you have the unit in a place with a lot of dust. The unit is fairly large, so expect that it will take up some space. It also works much better if you have both the intake and exhaust hoses hooked up and vented out of the window. I will say, the plastic slider that you can adjust for the window size was too large for the width of my window, so I had to trim about 2-3 inches off of it. Not a big deal, but if you don't have the tools to do that, it could be an issue. I haven't had any problems with it yet, but again, it's only been 5 days. I'll have to update my review if there are issues in the future.

Good unit, loud, helped us through AC repairs
AC went out in Phoenix and this helped us make it through the repair. My AC unit went out and the repair was going to take a few weeks due to back ordered parts. This unit helped us get through the Phoenix summer heat. We set it up in our bedroom. The plastic window dressing it came with is a little unintuitive. We actually needed to use both but that covers the intake hose which was fine for our case but wouldnโt have been good if we needed it. Unit is pretty loud. It sits next to our bed and took a few nights to get used to. The unit puts out cold air but it struggles in the 100 degree weather to cool an enclosed room down. My room isnโt the most efficient when it comes to air leak but it still took forever to cool the room down. The exhaust hose gets really hot so you must install it onto a window. No getting around that. The unit is large and heavy. Itโs not meant to be carried but I needed it in the upstairs bedroom. Overall it was cheap in comparison to the other less powerful options we considered and it does its job. After this it will become a garage unit or a backup if our home unit fails again. Only real complaints are the noise which I expect would be the same with any unit and that it takes hours to cool my master bedroom from 90 degrees.

Great value for a great AC
We bought this air conditioner recently after our old one (from a different brand) stopped working. I'm very impressed with this one so far. We have it set up in our living room, which is open to the upstairs landing, and the AC does a great job keeping the room cool, even during heat waves. It's got a powerful fan, too, so it even keeps upstairs from getting as hot as it usually does. You can't avoid noise with an AC, but this one isn't terribly loud, and the window attachment where the tubes vent to the outside is nice and secure. Didn't take too long to set up, either. I'm very happy with this purchase overall.

This is an absolute BEAST of a portable AC unit!
This portable AC unit is an absolute BEAST. I am extremely happy with it! Pros: 1. The main reason for buying an AC, how well does it cool, you ask? Absolutely fantastic! It easily puts out 30-35F colder output air than the ambient temp of the air in the room. Even outputting air lower than 32F, with no problem. The lowest I have seen it output was 27F when the room was at 61F and it has never frozen up on me. When the room is 90F it will easily output 60F, sometimes even lower temp air. All temps checked with a calibrated infrared thermometer. This is fantastic performance! With temps at 96F outside, it will easily keep my 375sqft upstairs room with vaulted ceilings at 75F, and that is WITH a computer system, including three monitors, and a server that all total around 750 watts, trying to make its job difficult! Great performance! That is the whole reason I bought this unit, since this upper story room gets really hot in the summer, even when the computers are not running, and that is where I have to work from home. To get this performance, I insulated the exhaust tube well, so heat does not radiate from it back into the room. It will not work as well if you don't do that. I doubt it could keep the room at 75F when it is 96F outside if the exhaust tube is not well insulated. On days that I know it is supposed to reach above 90F I turn on the AC early in the morning (8AM usually) at its lowest 61F setting, so it will get as cold as possible before the heat of the day, and basically let it run all day continuously, while I work, for it to keep it at 75F. If I don't turn it on early enough, it does struggle keeping it at 75F when it is 96F outside. But if I do as I explain above, starting it early, it will slowly creep up as the day gets really hot. But so far I have never had it go above 75F when I start it early in the morning, even when it is 96 outside (the hottest I have had to deal with, so far, since I bought the unit in July 31, 2021. I live in Orange County California for reference. And keep in mind this is with 750 watts of computer equipment heating the room all day as well. In comparison, I used to have a Soleus Air 14,000BTU unit with two hoses a few years ago. I thought it was decent, but not amazing. So when it broke I didn't bother replacing it. Well working from home because of COVID changed that, and I am so glad I bought this Whynter!! It is WAY better than my old unit. 2. Good noise levels for a portable AC. Quieter than the Soleus Air. On the highest fan setting, it is about as loud as a large box fan on medium settings. The fan is what makes the most noise on this unit. The compressor is quieter than the fan on its highest setting, so it doesn't really sound that much louder when the compressor is on. On the lower fan settings the compressor is louder than the fan. BUT there are some cons with the noise when it cycles if you are using this unit in your bedroom as you are sleeping. See the cons section below for more info on this. 3. I actually love that the air is blown upwards! Unlike a lot of reviews on here, who really dislike that. I have vaulted ceilings on the upper floors, and having the air blow up, will actually keep the room cooler and more even. It might take it longer to cool down a room on initial start-up, but it will keep the temps more even, and won't have to cycle as much when the air is blown up. Since hot air rises, the only way to cool the air efficiently above the height of the unit, is to blow the air up. My earlier Soleus Air could only blow the air horizontally, and it would be nice and cool down low, but at head level standing up it would be significantly warmer, and the room was never evenly cooled well. None of those problems with the upwards air from the Whynter. It keeps the whole room much more cool overall. If you need the cool air blown directly at you, use a fan. I do agree with other reviewers that it would be nice if the unit itself could have the output adjusted more. But I prefer it blowing up, so it is a non issue for me. 4. I like the looks a lot more than any other unit I have looked at. Cons: 1. I loved the AC's performance so much in my office that I bought another one for the bedroom. It is actually cheaper to run these than running my central air that is cooling the whole house, and instead just cool the rooms I am in. I hardly use my central AC anymore, and my electricity bill is much lower as a result. However in the bedroom, which is also around 375sqft, and vaulted ceilings, I ran into a problem that I didn't run into in my office, because it runs pretty much continuously in my office. When the temp in the bedroom reaches the AC temp settings, the unit shuts the compressor off, and runs the fan on the lowest setting for a while, and then shuts off the fan completely. This is terrible because the difference in noise levels is quite drastic when it comes back on, and it will wake you if you are using this at night while sleeping. But this is not even the worst. The worst is that it cycles the fan on and off, even when the temp is not high enough to trigger the compressor. And it does this a lot! Supposedly it does this to "sample the room temp" to see if it needs to turn on the compressor. I really dislike this, as the noise from off to the fan on is a big enough difference, like I said above, to wake people from sleeping. So even when the temp is low enough, it still cycles the fan on and off, a LOT! 2. This next bit is also mainly at night when trying to sleep. When it is hot enough, but not so hot that it needs to run continuously, it also cycles a lot when it reaches the set temp! And it is not that the unit is oversized for my needs. That is just how it is with this unit. Like I said it will keep a room at 75F on a day that is 96F, but it has to run pretty much continuously to do that, and you have to start it early, so it has a head start. Clearly it is not oversized for daytime use and the temps outside are above 80. The issue at night, when the temps outside are cooler: Say the temp outside at night is 75, and you have your temp set at 70F for sleeping (and by the way, the thermostat in the unit is very accurate! It matches my infrared thermometer reading exactly when it turns off. If it turns off when set to 70F, it really is 70F at that point! Impressive). When it reaches 70F it will shut off. But then it turns back on again at 71F! Only one degree warmer. This is too narrow of a working band. It should really be 2-3F in my opinion. Also, in my opinion, a perfect way to program this would be that if you have it set to 70, it would actually cool to 65, and then stop, and turn on again when it reaches 75. That would be perfect! I would rather be too cold than too hot. With such a narrow working band, this AC is oversized for a 375sqft room with vaulted ceilings and the temp outside is less than 80. With a wider working band of 2-3F, even when the temps are less than 80 outside, I think it would cycle longer, with less wear and tear on the compressor, and let people sleep better without the constant 5 minute cycling. That said, I would rather have too narrow of a working band, than too wide. A 5F band would be terrible too, as when you set your unit at 75 during the day, it would reach 80 before it would turn on again. That is too hot, and uncomfortable. Too wide of a working band also causes issues when your significant other is more sensitive to the cold. With a 5F working band, if you set it to 70, so that it won't go above 75, 70 might make people sensitive to cold feel too cold, while 75 might be borderline too hot for someone sensitive to the heat, like I am. Too wide is worse than too narrow, in my opinion. Anyway, the point of this long winded section, is that the ideal solution would be for the working band to be user adjustable! If you want it 1F, you can have that, and deal with the shorter cycles, but even temps. If you want it 5F you can have that, and have much longer cycles (probably better for the compressor), but deal with the wild temp swings. 1F cycles too much for my liking, and honestly it is my fear that it will wear out the compressor, more than just my comfort that makes me cringe when it starts cycling so often. But when combined with the issues I mentioned in Con #1, that it is very loud when it cycles, it is just too much to bear when trying to sleep. During the night when I set the unit much colder than during the day, I would be fine with a wider working band to keep the loud cycles down. On cool days or at night, I would set it to 5F wide and set the temp to 65 so it would never get above 70 for night. And on a cool day I would set it for 70 so it would never get above 75. During a hotter day, I would want a more narrow working band. The current 1F working band is fine! I can set it at 74, and it will never get above 75. And since a hotter day will take it longer to lower it one degree to 74 from 75. But if the working band had to be set and not be adjustable, I would rather it was set to 2F, or at most 3F, rather than the 1F it is set at from the factory. That would work better on cooler days or at night, with a bit less cycling, even though the temp swings would be greater. And it would be okay on hot days as well, when it will probably run continuously, anyway. So I have resorted to two options: Option A: Setting the unit to 61 when sleeping, so it won't cycle for a long while since it is set so low, and when it finally reaches 61 and starts to cycle every 5 minutes, it wakes me up, and I shut it off completely. Then I can sleep in peace until I get too hot at around 74F when sleeping, at which point the heat wakes me up. I am more sensitive to the heat when sleeping. That usually takes about 2-4 hours depending on how hot it is outside, and so when it wakes me up I turn it on again. It usually will cool from 74 to 61 in a couple hours, at which point the cycling wakes me up again, so I shut it off. And then I am usually good until I need to get up. This usually results in being woken up 2-4 times during the night, depending on how hot it is outside. Not that bad, as I usually get up at least once a night, anyway, to get a drink and go to the bathroom, etc. So when the AC wakes me up, I take care of things then. And I am good at falling right back asleep. Option B: If it is really hot, I start the AC about 2 hours before I go to bed. By the time I am ready to go to bed, it is usually at 61F, or at most around 63F. Then I can turn it off and fall asleep in nice cool comfort. But because it is a warmer night, and because I started it earlier, it will warm up earlier in the night, etc., and as a result I usually get woken up more in the night from being too hot, and I need to start the AC an extra time during the night. So this option results in the AC waking me up more times a night than Option A. Still not really a big deal, and the comfort of falling asleep in nice cool temps is worth it sometimes. But I really wish I could set the working band. This would solve this problem entirely. At night I would set the working band for 5F and set the temp to 68F. That way it would go up to 73F (not too hot to wake me up), and turn on, but take longer to get down to 68F. And cycle maybe every 20-30 minutes instead of every 5 minutes as it does now if I set it at 73F. Then during the day, when I don't care about being woken up, I could change the band to 1F or 2F, and be more comfortable with less drastic temp swings. It would be perfect! 3. The remote is pretty bad. My Soleus Air had basically the same functions on the remote, but what was nice about it was that it worked from really far away, and at wide angles. The Whynter remote has to be quite close, and you have to point it directly at it, and not to the side by much. Otherwise it won't work at all. Second, the Soleus Air remote was a two way remote. The unit could communicate back to the remote. That way if you changed settings on the unit itself, it would also update on the remote. The Whynter remote is one way only. From the remote only. If you change any settings on the unit, it will not update the remote. This can cause issues. If you have set the fan speed, the timers, or whatever on the unit, and then change the temp on the remote, all those settings are overwritten by whatever the remote was last set at for those settings. In other words, say you had turned down the fan on the unit, but had the fan on the highest on the remote last time you touched it. If you then use the remote to change the temp settings alone, the fan will kick up to high as well, even though you didn't want that, because that is what the remote has set in its memory. The Soleus Air communicates the settings on the unit to the remote first, and then the remote would send the temp change, so that no settings are overwritten. And vice versa. Nice feature the Soleus had. Also, in the 21st century it should be able to be controlled over WiFi from your iPhone or Apple watch! From anywhere. Even from outside your house. And the remote could work over WiFi as well. Then there would be no range or angle issues. Having an app would make it really easy to change the working band as described above as well, and enable all kinds of useful features. Like elaborate programmed timed behaviors. Like automatically setting it to 61 for two hours, and then turning it off for 3 hours, and then on again for 2 hours. That would also solve my sleeping issue, without needing to change the working band. Anyway, despite these cons, this AC is still wonderful for me. All I really care about is that is can cool really well, even on extremely hot days, and this unit definitely does this very well! Better than any other Portable AC that I have had, or seen others have. Others might not be able to deal with the cycling when trying to sleep, or not willing to resort to the options that I have resorted to. In which case, this Whynter might not be for you, despite how good it is! But if you are using it in a room other than the bedroom, it is absolutely fantastic for most people, I would think!

Ugh...I had such high hopes. Would love to hear back from Wynter customer service.
Update: I had to send it back. Went to Lowes and got a lower BTU window unit. Easier install than getting the hoses set up in my windows with the Wynter. It did the job all summer. It will do, but I have to say, it does not blow air as cold or cool down the room as fast as the Wynter did. I did so much research before making this purchase. I learned way more than I ever wanted to know about portable and window ac units, amps the units pull, amps on a circuit, how to calculate amperage 2 hoses vs 1 hose, etc. This unit was rated highly, not only on Amazon but other websites and YouTube reviews. Long story short, I have the ac set up and running after way too many aggravating considerations, modifications and headaches. Good news is it cools my bedroom addition, that is not well insulated, beautifully. Larger footprint and sound are not an issue for me but it is pretty big and maybe 2x as loud as my air purifier? I like the white noise bc it is loud enough to drown out noises outside of the room, but not so loud I can't get to sleep. Now, the long story and multiple headaches. First hooked it up, kept tripping the breaker. In all my research on the product, I missed that they suggest the unit go on a dedicated circuit. Idk about you but my house is not wired with a bunch of, at least 15 Amp circuits (unit needs 11. something, lets round up to 12 amps) that can be dedicated to one appliance. Doesn't that kind of cancel out or at best, severely limit the portability? So, my not soon enough to be ex husband (Headache number 1) comes over, switches out the breaker to a 20 Amp, turns the unit on, texts me and says it's cooling. Great! Totally worth the headache of having to ask him for help, right? Um, no. I get home and only the fan is on. Turn the ac on, flips the breaker. Meanwhile, my favorite uncle got wind of my issue and is straight freaking out bc just changing out the breaker is a fire hazard. The Headache is all, "if you don't trust my electrician skills...." Not really bruh. You didn't even know how to test the ac my dude. Back to YouTube trying to make sure I don't burn the house down. It most definitely is a fire hazard because a 15a breaker uses 14 guage wire and the 20a uses 12 guage. You can't trust that just bc the wire guage at the breaker is 12 that 12 guage was run all the way to the outlet. So, without my xray vision spectacles, I have no way to know w/o ripping out walls or something. Hazard is because, if the various things plugged into that circuit go to pull more than 20 amps, any section ran and inspected for a 15 amp breaker could catch fire. Apparently, please dont take my word for it. Please consider consulting an actual electrician who probably doesn't want your house to burn down with you in it. Ok, what to do? Headache with his superior electrician skills, says only the bedroom is on that circuit. If I am not running anything else, it will be fine. Ok, make sure nothing else is running in the bedroom. Turn it back on flips the breaker and my son, in the room next to mine, yells out, "are you doing something mom?" Why? His whole pc gaming set up went off when the breaker tripped. Strike 2 for Headache's alleged "electrician skills." What to do? Check outlets and discover 2 of the 3 in my son's room are on the same circut. Locate, purchase, pick up a surge protector with a cord long enough to run all the way across his room to the outlet not on my room's circuit. Get that all set up, try again. Ac runs a while, it's cooling, no breakers are tripping! Perfect time to enjoy a nap in my properly air conditioned room! Settle in, get comfy, about to doze off....ac cuts off. Bad words are said, throw the sheet back go to get up and notice, there is a red light blinking on the unit. Look it up in the manual. Don't I remember something about that being missing from the manual from a review I read? Yep. Not there. Google to the rescue points to the drain tank being full. Why would the drain tank be full on my self-evaporation, no drain needed PORTABLE AC? Back to the manual. 2 possibilities, humidity is too high or loose wire. For humidity issue, disconnect intake hose from window frame so it is using air from the room, in my air conditioned, humidity controlled house. So, wait dual hose is better though, right? No time for that now. Drain the tank (not easy bc the drain is practically on the floor. And, I'm doing this by myself bc, remember, Headache doesn't live here, I hate asking for his help and now he is all weird bc my questions have apparently insulted his "electrician skills."). No worries. I am resourceful, find a collapsible bucket, tilt to drain. Try again. Not extremely humid in here, should be fine. No need to admit defeat to my makeshift, questionable electrician who wanted to know why I got that instead of a window unit and wondered how it drains (still appearing a bit cocky when I assured him I know condensers do whatever it is they do and water has to go somewhere but this unit is self-evaporating). Runs a while, turns off, red light flashing. Did this cycle with draining a few times...got old quick. Ok, not the humidity then. So, loose wire. Manual says contact customer service. Must be pretty common since it is in the troubleshooting guide. Reassured bc there is a warranty. I'll be hot flashing in a nice, cool, refreshing 68ยฐ instead of 80ยฐ in no time. Sent the email a week ago. No word yet as to what to do. Contact Amazon 3 days in, still in their 30 day return window but it took a hand truck to get in the house and the box is almost as tall as I am. Guess who I have to ask to help if I have to send this thing back? Yup, Headache to the rescue, full of smug, "I told you so," no doubt. Amazon did offer 30% discount, if I keep as is, which doesn't impact the warranty. I elected to wait to see if iI hear back from Wynter. Meanwhile, said self-evaporation, portable, dual hose unit on casters, is atop a strong acrylic storage box I had, with a child's stepstool cramed against it that is somehow keeping it from rolling so I can keep the plug open to drain it and empty the water about every 2 hours. 2 stars because it is running, cooling my room and Headache, the wanna be fire hazard creating electrician, doesn't know it is not evaporating properly...yet. Wynter, please email me. I will plan to update whatever inconvenience happens next. Cannot recommend as is and it pains me to say, but Headache may be right....the window unit may be the better option. At least it drains outside (I guess?).

Effective and efficient
I've had it for about a month for my house that only has a swamp cooler. It's been amazing and is very efficient. It's quick to start up and not very noisy. There's 3 fan speeds and has modes such as cool, dehumidify, and fan. Set up is very easy as well and fits any window. It's also very easy to move. It'd be nice if there was a easier and cheaper way to get replacement window parts as I'd like to get it more easily moved back and forth between different rooms. Highly recommend nonetheless

I am very glad I purchased this earlier than the summer or we ...
First of all this air conditioner changed our lives! When I first was in the market for a portable air conditioner I was very careful to research, research, and research. Yes I was slightly uneasy about ordering an air conditioner online, but called Amazon directly and asked about my options if after I purchased it and it didn't work well for us about the return policy's. Amazon ensured that if it didn't work out then I would be able to return it in its original packaging and because of its size they would have a shipping company come pick it up which I thought for a return they would try to make it as hard as possible to return. So Amazon is a win win in my eyes. My only issue was that this is listed as a Prime eligible product and with my limited Prime knowledge I assumed I would receive it in 2 days which I didn't. I took about 5 so that was a little disappointing. I am very glad I purchased this earlier than the summer or we would have been in trouble just in waiting in a hot house on this thing. Back to the unitโฆ So set up was easy. I allowed for it to sit in an upright position overnight only because I was unsure how the shipping company handled it and wanted to be sure I did everything in my power to continue its longevity. (This is also listed in the directions) The hose connections were easy enough and because I have a taller horizontal sliding window I had an opening that I had to fill with particle board which wasnโt too hard to do. After I set it up I plugged it in and let it sit. The set up pamphlet does recommend buying a special filter to put into one of the hoses which honestly I havenโt done because I havenโt made an honest attempt to find them which I am sure you could at a Home Depot or Lowes. From what I have heard you can also buy insulation tape to cover the hose that produces a lot of heat, but this hasnโt been a problem for us. The Coolingโฆ The cooling is pretty amazing. After reading several reviews I second guessed my decision about purchasing it because it seems like people have great success or great failure. However on our end this AC has cooled our lower level 2 story house amazingly!! Our house is less than 15 years old so it is insulated pretty good, but because our house is North facing we get most of our heat in the back of our house. This cooler sits in the front and cools a vaulted ceiling living room, kitchen and small dinning, hallway, and half way cools the master bedroom on the same floor. All of this area is about 1200 sqft give or take. I originally purchased this to cool the living room, kitchen, and dinning room, which is all open floor plan about 420-450 swft btw, but it cooled even more than I expected. To keep track of the temperature I tried looking on my thermostat for my Heater and it was almost always higher than what it really was I am guessing because it wasnโt cooler in other places in my house. It even kept us cool in 100+ degree weather. It was about 109 outside and the cooler kept it about low to mid 70 in the living, dining, and kitchen. As a side note we purchased a Frigidaire 5,000 BTU 115V Window-Mounted Mini-Compact Air Conditioner that cools a room upstairs and we usually leave the door open just in case it will help with the over all vaulted ceiling space. The Frigidaire is rated for a small room of 250 sqft so I donโt think it is helping too much with the living space, but so you have the full facts to make an informed decision I just wanted to add that in there. This unit is also great and I plan on writing a separate review for this one. However the sum up on the cooling factor for the Whynter is awesome!! We have owned it since the end of May so I canโt speak for its longevity so only time will tell. It is totally worth purchasing for sure! Conโs Honestly these conโs donโt really matter to me because the AC works so well, but I will add them in case they matter to you. As for the noise, yes it is loud. My house usually isnโt pitch quite so it doesnโt really bother me, but if you think about it there is an AC in your house! Central air conditioners are put outside for a reason. THEY ARE LOUD! So to me this doesnโt really stop me from using it. My dish washer is very loud, but you donโt see me scrubbing dishes by hand so I donโt have to hear the noise. Same goes with any other loud appliance in my house. Maybe if it was loud and didnโt cool my house Iโd have a problem. The vent on the AC is nothing to be impressed with. I have read that the vent shoots the air straight up. I donโt seem to have that problem. Yes there arenโt very many ways you can control where the air goes, but you can direct it up and down. If you donโt want it shooting straight up you can move it down a notch and it isnโt. Not sure if people thought this would prevent max air flow, but we donโt seem to have a problem. Now the remote is another problem. I have read that if you use the remote you have to keep using the remote because if you switch to the buttons on the unit the remote doesnโt know what the unit knows. This is very true and annoying. However because of where I have the unit positioned behind my couch the remote canโt find the signal to the unit because it is blocked so we pretty much donโt use the remote. Again, not an issue for me because the unit works so well and the only reason I have to push a button is to turn the unit on or off. Not an issue. As for draining due to the dehumidifier. We live in a dry state with low humidity so this hasnโt been a problem. No sure how I would drain it if I needed to, but I have found plenty of YouTube videos on this unit so I am not concerned about it at this point. Portability. Now this is a portable unit per say, but it isnโt really practical to roll around the house for us. I initially thought we could use it for our open floor plan area by day and in our master by night, but to move this, then refit for a different sized window and then do it all over again and again every morning and night it would be a pain in the butt. However if we leave our master bed room door open it cools down enough to be comfortable instead of otherwise sweating as we did before. This AC really did above and beyond what I expected! Now would I recommend this to others?? Heck yes!! It does a great job cooling and we turn it on early in the day so that it keeps the house cool and we donโt have to worry about being uncomfortable. I am able to cook and this AC still can keep the house cooler and us comfortable. We are able to cook/bake for short amounts of time and still be comfortable in 90+ degree weather, but in the 100+ degree weather we found cooking is not an option if we want to stay comfortable and not sweat. We also have blackout curtains and blinds that help to insulate the heat which makes a huge difference so for those that this AC is not working for I would question placement of the unit as well as how insulated your house is not just in between the walls but for window coverings too. We found that using brown colored vertical blinds blocks out the heat way better than the white ones did. I also suggest another unit portable or window-mounted unit to help work together with this unit. If you want a cooler house and donโt want to foot out the bill for central air you should think about other ways to keep it cool because even 2 of these units would be cheaper than central air for us! Hopefully you find your solution because this was it along with the Frigidaire 5,000 BTU 115V Window-Mounted Mini-Compact Air Conditioner for us!!! Good luck and sorry for the unorganized review!

cool
Bought this unit to replace a 12,000 BTU window unit which got 'electrocuted' [fried]; electrical outlet burned out (wiring) leaving me with no air for a month. I'm in a dry boxed in apt facing the west, gets baked in the sun all day. Just received & installed the portable a/c tonight. So far I'm COLD (it's set at 72) on high fan it has a comfortable noise level, is MORE tolerable than the window unit & the operation hum isn't unpleasant (this building carries sound & vibrations cause it's so papery thin). The window a/c was much more hassle than this. It is a beast!! It's a big machine, but very manouverable, much more so than my 8,000 btu Frigidaire portable unit installed in my bedroom 2 years ago which is so annoying, has a jet engine whine & sounds like a mini bar fridge when it's cooling (constantly running!!). I am sincerely considering selling my smaller portable at some point & getting another Whynter (the 8,000 btu) for my bedroom!! 1 day delay in shipping (Purolator) due to the weight limit for their drivers. Only select persons can bring it up 2 flights of stairs (2 story walkup apt building). I was told they are authorized to leave it in the main foyer. I would've been STUCK (no dolly to haul it upstairs!) There was a slight pinging sound when I first started the unit, like something inside was loose. Oddly enough it lasted for about 2 mintues then nothing. I was worried something was loose, though it was solidly packed (inside a box with another box) This lasted almost 5 years. Began control panel malfunction after removing the drain plug for a routine draining (despite being self condensing they fill up with water & inevitably it shuts down the machine without much warning. A beeping & tiny red flashing light on the power button, STOP flashing on the digital display). Drained it again, started running again but the compressor ran continually causing it to freeze up. Plus it wouldn't switch formats (a/c to dehumidify to fan). After nonstop run arounds trying to diagnose & get it running as my apt was turning into a steam bath (30 F outside & 82 inside) I ultimately had to shove it in a corner & purchase a Frigidaire window unit. I had to go 11 days without air conditioning in some extreme heat due to all the malfeasance with the Whynter unit & can't get a technician, repairs or parts. I'd never again be talked into buying portable. It couldn't cool my apartment I was always uncomfortable & it certainly doesn't last!! I've had window units for 15+ years

Worth it if you wait for it to be discounted
I had a Danby 11,000 BTU single hose unit. Since it was a single hose unit, it was not very efficient and I saw that by the amount of power it used for cooling. That included creating a gap below the window exhaust kit to allow for the outside air needed by the AC to compensate for the negative room air pressure it would create. And minimize the distance that the outside air had to travel. The Whynter 14,000 BTU has been set up at the bottom of the stairs to blow air up towards the bedrooms. The deflector on top of this unit blows the air high, so it works on getting some cool air upstairs, while at the same time, keeping the main floor cool. It is an open stairway. I have a smaller AC in one of the bedrooms upstairs, but it's not powerful enough to keep the entire upstairs cool. I added a little bit of foam board on the section where the slider is, to complete the seal, as well as foam weather strip tape on the main exhaust plate. I taped over the open screw holes in the window kit and put a towel over the exhaust hose for now to help insulate against heat. I have ordered Reflectix Spiral Duct Wrap, which will replace the towel. To monitor the power, I have a TP-Link HS110 wifi power outlet. The unit is as quiet as I would expect for this kind of unit and a little quieter than the Danby unit we replaced when the compressor is running. I bought the unit when it was at its lowest price this year, which is still higher than other brands. However, having a dual hose unit is really the way to go to prevent negative air pressure, which means the AC will draw outside air from somewhere. It isn't Energy Star, but the power it draws is reasonable for its size. The EER is 11.2. It would be nice if it had an auto fan setting that would have it run low when the compressor isn't running and then speed up once it kicks in. Overall, the Whynter AC units are highly rated and it is well worth it to buy when it is discounted. At $790 without discounts on Amazon.ca, it's too steep, when compared to $453 US, which is roughly $600 CA at current rates. Keep an eye on it being discounted and you will have a good buy. *** Update *** Since my initial review, I have added the Reflectix Spiral Duct Wrap to the exhaust hose and a small piece on the adjustable window slide. I also added two 8 inch x 25 feet of flexible duct with a blower in-between to get air to our master bedroom. I am very impressed, as it is now as cool in the bedroom as it is downstairs. This AC has had no issues with keeping our whole house cool and it's like we have central air in the bedroom, as you don't have the noise of the AC in there. I'm impressed that 14,000 BTU could cover close to 1000 sq ft of living space. Thank you to other reviewers for suggesting the Reflectix and putting a divider between the intake and exhaust on the outside. *** Update 2 *** This summer has been both hot and there has been an air quality statement due to forest fires in the area. So these past few weeks the windows have been closed and the AC has been running 24/7. I purchased the Antimicrobial Filter and used it along with Carbon Filter to keep the air clean in the house. I'm very glad I have this dual hose system, so that it isn't causing a negative pressure in the house. My allergies have been kept in check and the house has been an even temperature. One other thing I discovered is that the AC will come back on with the previous settings when I use the TP-Link Smart Plug to power it off and on. This way I can control it to go off at night and on in the morning when the nights are cool. This was an unexpected bonus.

Great unit... but...
This thing performs. Here's the deal: If you can fit a window AC unit, go that route. THey are way more efficient and they will save you money in the long run. This portable unit (and all other 14,000 BTU portable units) perform close to a 7,000 window unit. Now, as far as a portable unit goes, this one is fantastic! It came with everything it needs and long enough hoses to connect to where I wanted. It does have its flaws. Pros: Cools fast. 1 hour full blast dropped my 400sq. foot bedroom 10 degrees Celsius on a hot day. It works! Multiple speed fan. Great for cutting some noise... and I do mean SOME. Semi-directional vent 2 hose (big plus for the high flow of this unit) Carbon filter (we have smokers all around us in our apartment and the smell stopped with the carbon filter. If you have odd smells around you, pick up an extra one. One filter lasted the hot season). Cons: Loud. When it kicks in during the night, it wakes us up. When the warranty is up, I am taking it apart and seeing if I can sound proof it more. When the compressor kicks in, the fan goes up as well creating an even louder noise difference even with the fan set on 'low.' Then when the compressor shuts off, the fan goes back down to low again creating a large change in noise levels. Almost as bad as the unit turning on. The LCD screen does not dim at all. I have to cover it up with tape. I thought this would tick me off but really, not a big deal. Once the warranty is up, I will be disabling the light. Directional vents are pointed. You get the option of Up, More Up, Even More Up, or Uppest. Forward would have been nice. Negative pressure. This unit pumps a LOT of air (a good thing). Even with the 2nd hose, we were getting some negative pressure. In a sealed room, I was getting headaches until I added a small breath hole in the stripping of my bedroom door. This will not be a problem for most. 1-track response. I contacted Whynter about the LCD screen light, the negative pressure, and the noise. The responded about the Negative pressure and nothing else (a VERY bad habit of companies these days where they read the first item in an email, respond, and ignore the rest). I wrote back to ask about the other issues and never received a response. Their phones are always down. That is not to say there service is bad. In fact, they responded the first and only time within 3 hours of my morning email to them. Bottom Line: This is a unit I would get for a place that does not need silence. It is a very good unit and out performs most every other unit I've seen out there (and I have used many with a south-west exposure on the top floor of a condo building). I tried once, just to see, if it could cool my whole 1000sq foot place. It brought the temps down 2 or 3 degrees but it will not handle that size of a condo. If you are looking for an office AC unit or daytime use only unit, this is your machine!
