Cole & Mason Derwent Grinder, 7.5" Pepper Mill, Stainless Steel

This is an outstanding pepper mill. It grinds the peppercorns uniformly and consistently and is very comfortable to use. You can select from a range of grinds, from coarse to fine, and all work really well. I ordered this with a wood handle which provides a good grip and it looks great. It is easy to refill -- you just pull off the top, fill it (if you have a small funnel that makes it easier), and pop the top back on. Highly recommended. One note: It comes partly filled with peppercorns and they made me cough when I used them, so I discarded them and bought some highly rated organic peppercorns and use those instead.

Needed a new pepper mill right away. This one had great reviews and came next day. So far, the mill has been perfect. It looks great on my counter. The grind sizes vary from fine to coarse. The mill feels well-made and should last a long time.

Our nice OXO grinder we had for years finally gave up the ghost and this one came recommended. It's a bit pricey for our retirement budget, but with all the good reviews, we figured it was worth it if it outlasted us ha. Grinding is easy and the piece size is true to the easy adjustment. HIghly recomended. We're pleased with it.

Everything good was as described. Very good grind adjustment, wide variety of grain sizes. Top loader for pepper -very convenient. A good amount of pepper in one grind. Easy to grip and turn. (I am in love.) My reservations are 1. the body is not glass but acrylic which may be prone to scratching. 2. The filler top does not screw onto the base but just fits down snuggly (when new). Because of the stainless-steel, I assumed the whole grinder would be of the same durability. (I should not love too quickly.)

This grinds pepper! Fine to coarse, it does it well. You do have to have clean hands on the finest grind as there is a load of resistance. If the cat knocks it off the counter, well you have pepper everywhere as the top comes right off.

I had bought a Peugeot pepper mill, which is typically highly recommended. I found it to be less than satisfactory in terms of consistency and reliability of its output (I can't totally rule out human error). The Cole & Mason Derwent Mill seems to be more consistent and reliable than my old Peugeot mill. The clear bin that holds the peppercorns is nice for monitoring the fill level. It's also easy to fill.

Quality item. My last one (which was cheap) broke and didn't last... the pepper was dispensed very lightly. This one is substantial and the pepper is dispersed quickly and the flakes are big. I love the design. Simple yet beautiful and classic. Going to get the one for salt too.

Update: I received a refund from the seller due to the item's condition, which was very generous - great customer service. I think I can comment on the quality of the grinder now and ignore the shipping issues (in the old review below). Updated Review: Build Quality: 4.5/5, plastic barrel knicks this down from 5/5. Feels sturdy in the hand. Aesthetics: 4.5/5, again a slight downgrade due to the plastic. Otherwise it looks and feels nice. Action: 5/5, Grinds a LOT of pepper per turn. Feels smooth. The grind sizes are very good - the finest size is very fine. It is easy to change grind size. A quality product. My only complaint was how it was shipped, hopefully they change that in the future. The pepper grinder was shipped in an envelope with no packaging, so it arrived damaged. Since it was just in the envelope with no protection, it fell apart in transit. The central axel that turns the grinder is bent out of alignment due to shipping damage - it still works, I think, but it is not in new condition. Also, it was full of pepper when it was shipped, so the pepper fell out in transit and it and the various parts of the grinder scratched the stainless steel. All the pepper was just loose in the shipping envelope, but I wasn't necessarily planning on using it anyway - I'm more concerned about the damage to the item. It seems like a decent grinder, but I paid $50 for it and it arrived in essentially used, slightly damaged condition.

I bought this as a gift for my partner who loves to cook and uses a lot of pepper in his dishes. So far it works great. It grinds very smoothly at all settings, from fine to coarse. It's a good size... fits easy into anyone's hand without being cumbersome. The mill has a nice, clean design and looks great on the counter. We have not refilled it yet but hopefully we don't run into any problems. We expect it to last for years. Now that we know we like it, we are waiting for the salt grinder to go on sale so we can have a matching set.

I have used dozens of pepper mills in my life, between cooking professionally and as a hobby. This one is by far the easiest to refill, the easiest to select a grind size, and the easiest to use. Granted you don't get the same level of fine control over the grind setting as you do with a traditional mill, but for 99% of people the settings on this will cover every need anyway. And since you don't need to unscrew the cap to refill it, you don't lose and have to re-find your grind setting each time you replace the peppercorns in it. It still works as well now as the day I bought it, and I'm debating buying 2-3 more to have some peppercorn variety available. By far the best one I've ever used. Not to mention it looks great, it's just a classy piece of design. 10/10, my only concern is the long term durability of it since the part that holds the cap on to the body is plastic, but I won't know how well that hold up for another decade or two. As far as I can tell the plastic they use is very high quality though.

ATK gave it really good reviews. I can see why unlike every other pepper grinder I’ve ever had including ones that were more expensive than this one you get substantial pepper deployment. It’s not a pepper cannon, but it’s the next best thing after that. And this price is pretty good. It’s not bad looking but it feels cheap and plasticy compared to some of the higher end ones, but it does the job and I guess at the end of the day that’s the most important thing. I’m not running a restaurant here.
