lovely doll altogether
The Ghanaian Barbie superseded my expectations. A while ago I bought the 2007 South African Barbie, which I knew I would love. I wasn't sure that I would like this Barbie because she's an old model, from 1995 I think, but upon unwrapping her I was equally impressed. Her kente cloth outfit and matching headwrap is properly stiff and regal (she wears a yellow cotton shift underneath). She has a very cute face, makeup and jewelry just right. The only problem I had was with her golden sandals, which don't stay on her feet very well, although this is not really noticeable with the doll on display. Ultimately I don't know how authentic her outfit is (I have to be a little dubious because Mattel has made some serious blunders with the international doll lines), but she and South African Barbie look great together in my living room. (I'm still on the fence about buying Kenyan Barbie, which is even older and doesn't appear nearly as African.) I recommend Ghanaian Barbie to doll fans, ethnic culture fans, and proud black women and girls. Eagerly awaiting more African Barbies in the DOW collection!
