Great replacement pickup
I replaced the stock pickup in my Sterling Ray4 with this EMG MMHZ and a BTS control and I am extremely pleased with the sound. The stock Ray4 pickup can be a bit hot and microphonic, but still sounds good and has an aggressive character. This pickup is wired in series with a ceramic magnet, like the stock Ray4 pickup. It keeps the great, aggressive sound of the stock pickup while sounding clean and punchy with absolutely no noise. It improves on the characteristics of the stock pickup while getting rid of the drawbacks. It was not completely solder-free for me, though it might have been on a different bass. It includes a crimping connector intended to connect one wire between the battery and input jack. I wound up soldering that since I had to solder on an extra length of wire so that the ground wire reaches all the way from the volume knob to the bridge.I'm working on another Ray4 and will absolutely put this pickup in there as well, but with a 3 band EMG preamp and an EMG series/parallel push/pull volume pot.

Does not include everything you get for the same price direct from EMG
NOT what you get if you order the same item, same price directly from EMG. EMG includes the wiring, pots, jack necessary to install without soldering. These parts would cost over $50 if purchased separately and can be much more for active pickups. If you don't care about getting the wiring, pots, etc. basically the 'installation kit' for the same price, then by all means buy these. I prefer to get my moneys worth.

Rich and delicious!
Just recently got these pickups, as I bought a new bass recently -- yet the sound quality had been lacking. I cannot believe how much better the bass sounds with these. The tonal quality is so rich and delicious. I can play some very heavy metal and the sound amazing, like an apocalyptic storm, and then a moment later I can adjust the knobs on my bass to give it a rich and buttery slow bluesy molasses-ey sound. These pickups are very versatile, and sound soooo much better than the stock pickups that came with the bass. I appreciate that they've turned my sexy looking bass into a sexy sounding bass. Props to The Guitar Store in Seattle for installing them.
