While marking my driveway entrance what happens if vehicles drive on it.

They will brake. Driving family sedan and a golf cart over them broke two so far. The casing is plastic with aluminum coating. Anything more than a person stepping on them will brake them. Therefore, they are good for decks but not for driveways.

Is there a trick for determining whether the on/off button is in the “on” position?

Thank you for your question. There is switch on the bottom of the light that you would push down to turn on and also if you release the button it will turn off.

Can these be mounted vertically and still remain waterproof? IE: Vertical part of my deck stairs.

I'm sure they could be mounted vertically but the solar panels are on the top so if mounted vertically they may not receive adequate sun for daily solar charging. The waterproofing material covers the entire light. I mounted mine flat directly on my deck steps. They work great. Not super bright but definitely provides lighting to see steps at night. Hope this helps :)

Do you have to mount them or can you just set them down?

I mounted mine. Primary use was on a dock and they are light enough for the wind to take.
