This is probably my favorite ever USB to 485 converter - including compared to $$$ units from BlackBox and similar 'pro' suppliers. It has been 100% reliable, 0 issues. It works. It just works.

Absolute must-have at my work
Quality, industrial part. Ready to mount in a cabinet or on a project board. Great set of IO options. A real Swiss Army Knife if you need to speak serial to industrial equipment.

Feature-loaded with ground isolation, self-powered from USB and a combination of interfaces
Amazing that for this price you get true isolation. i.e. avoids problems with ground loops / ground level shifts between devices. I opened the case and looked at the circuit board, it has a DC-DC isolator for the power as well as the expected isolation barrier for the signals. The board had a very clear cut-out / clearance trench where the isolation is from the USB side over to the serial connector side. (the serial connectors RS-232/RS-485 are not isolated from each other, but that is fine since it is only intended to use one of those at a time. The point is that this is a USB host to serial adaptor, so the USB/PC is isolated.) Besides that, the FTDI USB/serial port chipset is pretty easy to install in Windows (Microsoft recognizes and automatically downloads driver.) So far all 3 interfaces (RS-232, RS-485, TTL, all worked well for me.) I expect to use TTL for devices like Raspberry Pi that doesn't bother with transceivers.

Great for testing Modbus communication.
I use this for testing Modbus/RS-485 communication from different controllers. I recommend this for anyone interested in verifying comms for their different devices

Removable term resistor, stays connected
Use it for USB to RS485. Less chances of usb being inadvertently disconnected compared to the thumb drive style unit. Nice to be able to remove the 120 ohm terminating resistor

Worked out of the box on Windows 10
I ordered this because my previous usb to "rs232" cable didn't actually have true rs-232 voltage levels, I needed it in order to program a curtis golf-cart motor controller... As soon as I plugged in this Waveshare box, worked instantly! Windows 10 found the driver on it's own, and within mere minutes of unboxing; I was in business programming a motor controller for a local guy who had a broken down mobility scooter. The box housing seems really high quality I feel, and its heavy too which I like about it. A+ Waveshare!
