Great book for kids figuring themselves out
My kid loves the concept that clothes are for everyone and anyone can wear what they like. Mary Walker is an amazing role model, and the history of her at the end was so interesting and inspiring.

You have to get this book.
Loved the topic. I remember when we girls weren't allowed to wear pants in school. My granddaughter needed to hear it was ok to be different. The illustrations are terrific.

Fabulous, Fabulous book!!!!!!!
I'd actually been looking for books about boys who want to wear dresses, but kept coming across books that were addressing it from the perspective of effeminate boys instead of just your average boy's boy who'd like to wear something pretty--I'd almost lost all hope of finding a book that supported people wearing what they want to wear in a way that didn't hint at anything on the fringes of gender, just on comfort and liking what you like (I have 4 year old twins, a boy and a girl and my son likes wearing his sister's "girl" clothes at times). When I found this book, I was THRILLED. Not only is it historically interesting and helpful (LOVE the details about Mary's life at the end of the book!), but it's told in such a simple way that it's easy to take the message that clothes are clothes to ANY kind of clothes one may want to wear. My kids LOVE the book--because they both wear pants, they can completely understand why someone in an uncomfortable dress would want to wear them, they're amazed that people would be so mean about someone wanting to wear pants (and it helps them to learn about how people act when they're scared of something new), but my kids have actually been able to make the leap, from reading the book, to seeing the similarities of my son's experiences when I've allowed him to wear a dress or a "girl's" shirt or boots or shoes to school and people have made comments to him about it. They LOVE seeing how brave Mary is in wearing HER clothes (while completely understanding why she'd want to wear them) and it's been helping them see how things have changed over the years and how what is considered "girl's" clothes or "boy's" clothes is actually something fluid that can change if people are brave enough to do what Mary did--to wear what they want. Way to go, Mary!

A fantastic message with beautiful art.
This is a must have for anyone that has kids. An instant classic, the timely message, about a young girl that stands up for what she believes in will not be lost on young minds. A great way to have a conversation with your kids about standing up for their beliefs, even when everyone tells you your wrong. Beautiful art. My daughter loves this book!

Beautiful illustrations and powerful message
Itโs taken me a long time to learn to wear what I want, what Mary the main character learned as a child. This book has a wonderful message about being yourself even when no one gets you. The illustrations are simple but beautiful. A nice surprise at the end was a picture and story of Mary Edwards Walker the real life woman behind this story.

Phenomenal read! Girl power. Confidence. Individuality.
This is such a great book about a little girl with a fierce confidence. She stands strong for her beliefs despite setbacks. This is such a great read and a fav in our house. Highly recommend.

Adore this book, as does my 3.5yr old daughter
a great way to age-appropriately introduce the fact that women inherit a history of inequality in a very accessible way. A great reminder of the potential of bravery, of speaking up and pursuing what you know to be right. The power of one person taking a risk.I don't know if any of that is related to why, but it's one of my daughter's fav books at the moment too.

And then don't tell me fashion is not important

Great story
Excellent book. Just a note that it uses the word pants instead of trousers, which may need to be explained to children. However, the book has arrived damaged in the corners.
