Does peppermint oil stop mice coming into house

It might stop them coming in (I don't know) but it certainly doesn't get rid of them once they're inside. We tried peppermint oil, copper mesh, double sided tape, and sonic plug-in repellants and nothing worked. We had loads of humane traps down too and only ever caught about 4 mice.

Meanwhile they were tearing up our houseplants every night and eating their way through the sofa. Once they're established the only thing that worked for us was poison bait. We finally got rid of them after about 9 months of trying to do it the humane way (and believe me I'm vegetarian so this was a last resort). But peppermint oil? Laughable that the RSPCA recommends this, honestly.

Question 2

Do I thread the unopened sachets through the rod in the bait station or do I need to remove the wrapping before threading them onto the rod?

We put blocks down wrapped(didn't have a station) and they were untouched so we unwrapped them and they all disappeared and so did the infestation

Can you just leave them around the garden with out a catcher

Please don't leave the blocks lying around the garden! They are poisonous to all animals.
They must be placed in a bait box designed for holding rat & mouse bait blocks.
Bait boxes can be found on Amazon or at hardware stores. 
We paid about £15 for ours (there are cheaper and dearer ones around) but they last for years.

Question 4

Could a hedgehog get into these boxes?

I shouldn't think so as hedgehogs have more girth than rats as a rule, but it depends on the size of the hedgehog I suppose.
