Garmin 010-02038-02 DriveSmart 65, Built-in Voice-Controlled GPS Navigator with 6.95” High-Res Display, Black

Really excellent piece of kit that proved totally invaluable for our trip from the UK to Canada. After years of working from paper maps and internet screen shots - we rented a vehicle in Florida (back in 2019) that came with a dash mounted Garmin as a free upgrade and immediately realised it was taking a huge amount of stress and pre-planning away from us. Post pandemic and travelling again I decided to buy this unit to make life much easier. Living in the UK - I was able to order this GPS (SatNav) on Amazon.com (rather than Amazon.co.uk) and have it delivered to me in the UK direct from the USA. It is a great sized unit that is very very easy and intuitive to use and for the driver to see and read as you are driving. Like all GPS (SatNav) units it can very occasionally get small things wrong - but 99.999% it was very accurate. Anyone travelling to Canada - be warned that mobile/cell phone costs in Canada are unbelievably high - therefore EVEN with a USA/Canadian sim card in our phone - it would have cost a fortune to buy enough data in Canada (not necessarily the same in the USA which had much cheaper mobile/cell phone charges) to use a smart phone as a GPS/SatNav. Therefore we found it much more cost effective to buy the GPS/SatNav outright and it will work for years for future visits. One last thing about this model - after doing loads of research online - it tells you that this model is designed to work in tandem with a connected mobile/cell phone in order to receive traffic updates. It tells you this model works perfectly well as a GPS/SatNav on its own - but will not give live traffic updates without a connected mobile/cell phone - I considered this before buying - but decided that route guidance was enough and more important to me that anything else. HOWEVERE - after arriving in Canada - this device WAS giving us live traffic reports and rerouting to take the least congested routes - and we did NOT pair it with a mobile/cell phone - but still received live traffic reports. Great unit - Highly Recommended

This Garmin includes unlimited map updates via computer. I’m not very “tech-savvy”. Garmin’s instructional video on their website is exceptional. Clear, concise, very helpful. I completed the initial map update seamlessly. Aside: Purchase a 6GB-32GB microSD card. At some point (perhaps even with the initial map update) you’ll need to insert it into the slot of the device for needed storage. Screen size is good. Nice and large, but not obstructive. I am currently using it without the cell phone app. Not concerned with local traffic around town. Will use it for long trips. ***I purchased this because I was utterly unimpressed with the Navigation System with the new cars’ Infotainment systems. Seriously? Additionally my cell phone plan doesn’t provide the level of mobile data needed for the various phone navigation apps available; unless I can commit to a much higher monthly bill. Then the proverbial light bulb went on and I remembered my old Garmin. YES!!!! I am so happy with my new Garmin choice. Well worth the investment.

I got this when I started a pizza delivery job. I drive 75% in the city and 25% in the country (Southern Illinois). I LOVE the subtle-ding the Garmin gives me when I hit 5mph over the speed limit (optional feature I enabled). It also displays the speed limit in most cases. The Voice Recognition is roughly what I expected. If I could rate the voice recognition on a 1-100 scale, I'd give it a 87. It recognizes well used streets well...but not quite as accurate on lesser known or said streets (or streets that could easily sound like something else). I always turn off the radio when I speak to allow it to hear me better. (But in most cases it can recognize with the radio on low). The SPEED at which I speak to the Garmin is Roughly 10-15% SLOWER than the Normal/Natural rate I would use if I were talking clearly to a Person. This seems to make it easier for the Garmin to read...But it could be slightly irritating to the impatient. Also the SPEED at which the Garmin Speaks to me (after I speak to it) will say something like, "Did you say, '123 Park Street".....Then I'll reply, 'Yes'....then then Garmin will say to me, 'WIll you like to begin Navigation', then I'll say, 'Yes' then it'll Beep/Chirp and say, 'Please Drive to the Highlighted Route'.... The conversation of the paragraph above could be better....and could be worse....Once again (I only use the voice activation if I sense that it's an, "Easy' Street for it to recognize like Main Street or Park Street...not 'Chataqueaua Street' (That it mistakenly thinks I said, 'Choctaw Street' as an example) It finds roughly 98% of the addresses I look for. Usually is it doesn't find it...its because it's a new subdivision or street. It also occasionally happens when when it's WAY out in the country. Despite me griping about a few things...I only do so to highlght what I've noticed. Overall it not only have achieved my expectations...but it slightly exceeds it (Minus the voice activated aspect/Which I'd say it only reached my expectations) The other thing I'll say I love...Is How/When the Garmin decides to zoom in on the screen/Zig Zag Pattern of the Road as you get CLOSER to the destination. AS you get closer to the destination the Garmin Zooms in on the REMAINING portion of the route which REALLY helps out on knowing what to expect further down the road. My lights are about to be replaced (Older Mini-Van) BUT...If I were driving in the country (Little to No Street Lights)...It is a LIfesaver to be able to SEE/KNOW sharp curves ahead of time by looking at the Garmin. Also...if you're in an older part of town (With a lot of one way streets)...It's nice to have an audible voice Warn you as a backup, "You are going the WRONG way down the Steet"...Haha Things that could be better...And it could be worse: The ability of the Garmin to find the exact apartment number (In an apartment complex/Mobile Home Community). If I could rate that on a 1-100...I'd give it only a 35. (Granted it's not something they claim to have) Small gripe I have. I drive a GM vehicle and I have to sometimes turn the headlights on/off twice before my headlights go off...Sometimes when I do this the Garmin will say, "Say a Command" and while it's speaking it sounds like somebody pulled the plug on it WHILE it was speaking...it sounds a little harsh WHEN this happens (Which isn't ALL the time/But it DOES happen occasionally). It's not something that can't be dealt with (and isn't Too loud...but it's slightly irritating when it happens) If Garmin could eventually master knowing all the apartment numbers/mobile home communities and on which face/side of the building they're located on...it'd make things MUCH easier though (Delivering Pizza's). Believe it or not....Sometimes it takes less time to get to an apartment complex vs finding the right building. Less people have addresses well lit/Visible on their homes/mailboxes than you'd think. Overall I'm VERY happy with the purchase. On the rare 2% of the time I couldn't find an address....my cellphone would always get me there. **Also, I bought the Backup Camera from Garmin** It's DIRT-Simple to install (A child/elderly person) could install it themselves unassisted. The 2 Lithium AA batteries I purchased (**NOT**-Included-by-the-Way)...lasted Roughly a month (Jan-Feb 2020).

This improved GARMIN GPS is awesome! the screen is nice and large with great features. I love that it will synch and save our favorite places too. What I didn’t like but we finally found how to turn it off, it will communicate with your cell phone in blue tooth and tell you if you have someone at the door or a phone call coming in to your phone. I think that’s not a good for a GPS and I think it’d be distracting for driver. It kept popping up and we finally solved how to stop that. I also thought it’s not good for privacy if someone is riding with us. It’s different from our previous GARMIN —clearer, larger screen with more features. It communicates well with the backup camera on license tag (sold separately) but the backup camera doesn’t come on when backing up, have to touch something on screen. I liked it better to automatically come on when backing up, for safety purposes. It does come on for a few moments when first turning on the GPS though. Now the voice recognition, it depends on where you are from and if you have an accent. If you are from the Northern or Midwestern states it recognizes your voice better. If you have an accent from the South, it’ll make you want to take your hammer to it. You may as well be speaking Cajun or French or Greek, it’ll scramble your intentions greatly! So it understands one of us but not the other one. It has great options for saving places and labeling them, assigning the icons, etc. I don’t think it helps avoid construction or if it’s supposed to. Same for toll roads on that. Best of all, you can save your favorite locations and back them up, can sync them with other devices if you so wish. So go ahead grab one and enjoy driving more, it’ll tell you when to turn and map out your route, no more printing maps and missing your turn and squinting at signs while estimating how much longer before turning off! It’s a GARMIN, yes, I recommend it! Oh while you are at it, grab a “garmin gps” dashboard mount. It took us some time to realize they are on Amazon; we didn’t like the ones the local store sold and the options are better on Amazon for those. which one works for you is according to the shape of your dashboard or if you plan to mount it on a window. You can even purchase a wire for hardwiring it in your vehicle. Then save the wire which came with for when you are traveling/flying and using a car at your destination, etc. In the past we had a camera which was hardwired by the bumper. The new ones go over the license tag and so much easier, they communicate wirelessly. I was concerned about it getting stolen but it is screwed on good and so far no issues. Husband was hauling something on his truck and couldn’t see to back up but that backup camera, you can now push to see what is behind you, even when driving! Pretty neat technology and great pairing between the two.

I upgraded to this from a 7 year old Garmin when the battery failed. I had fears of the usual technology gaps but this upgrade was fast and perfect. The changes in function and appearance are a big step up from the old unit. I must confess I would not have done it if the old one had not failed, because we recently added a new vehicle, A Honda Ridgeline and in comparison to that old unit its built in GPS is an annoying mess. But what is surprising is it uses the Garmin GPS operating system. Why Garmin ever agreed to this implementation of their software and kept the Garmin name on it is a mystery; it is a mess in many respects and if this DriveSmart 65 had been anything like the Honda implementation it would have gone right back to Amazon. Thankfully its turned out to be everything and much but more than that old one. The high level street detail mode option and the map displays are so well implemented it can really be used like a street atlas. The connection to a smart phone app for online input may be nice but I cannot depend upon it since I often travel not only out of internet contact but also phone signal contact. My Wife normally drives the Ridgeline and if I end up driving it much then I will bolt one of these units to the dash just like the Tacoma and never use that internal GPS thing.

I bought this Garmin 010-02038-02 DriveSmart 65, Built-In Voice-Controlled GPS Navigator with 6.95” screen to replace a smaller Garmin DriveSmart that was about 6 years old. All the features look and work similar to the old one so there wasn't much of a learning curve for me. The bigger screen makes this unit much more pleasant and easy to use. It is faster than the older one. It's also more intuitive and narrows down the possible choices and presents more options for the address or places as you are entering the information. It has a lot of choices for map layout so you can customize to your preference. Voice command is also better than the older unit, but not perfect. With the old one the more I used the voice feature the better it got, to a point. This one is better out of the box and it may get even better with use. It is easy to update the maps and firmware through wifi sitting in the driveway, and quicker at it than the older unit. I have found these dedicated GPS units to be much better than the factory entertainment/GPS systems when it comes to directing you, and giving you options for routes. You can also link it with the cell phone app and have instant traffic updates and options for avoiding congested areas. The price seems more than fair for a GPS with so many features. I like the Garmin interface better than others I have used so it was a no brainer for me to buy it.

The Garmin DriveSmart 65 has been an excellent GPS. The large 6.95" screen is clear and easy to read, and the directions are accurate and reliable. I really like the voice-control feature, which makes it convenient to use while driving. It updates quickly, finds routes fast, and overall works smoothly every time. A great GPS that does exactly what it should.

I ordered this Garmin Drivesmart units last week. The truck has android auto built in, but it is always very buggy and takes quite a bit of time to connect. It also can hang up and nothing displays on the screen. I got tired of that and got this uniti instead. It has lifetime maps and traffic. It can also link to the phone for calls and texts, but I can still do that through the head unit and bluetooth. Has Wifi built in and it downloaded a map and system update when I first plugged it in. I really like this GPS so far, display is very crisp and updates while driving are fast. Traffic works well, requires you to use the Garmin Drive app on the phone, but they dont charge you for it. Not as integrated as something like Waze, but not bad for showing slowdowns, school zones or red light cameras. I'm using an aftermarket mount to stick to the windshield and move it closer which seems to work well so far. Once you are in the where to screen, all you have to do is say "Hey Garmin" and it immediately responds. All the acceptable commands are already on the screen as push buttons, so all you have to do is say find address or whatever. You don't have to remember what phrase to use, they are right there. I rambled off a few addresses from memory and it displayed the correct address as the first in the list. Once you are in a navigation mode, it always responds to hey garmin. Honesty, it is so much easier and intuitive than the phone and all the apps and much easier than the older units where you first have to enter state, then city then address.

Compre este producto por que hice un viaje largo de mas de 8 horas en Mexico. No tuve ningun problema con el GPS, te avisa los limites de velocidad, no todos estaban correctos y te avisa cuando hay curvas. Lo que me preocupo un poco es que como tiene que ir conectado todo el tiempo a veces lo sentia muy caliente, pero aguanto todo el viaje conectado. La ventosa que tiene queda bien fija en el parabrisas, solo se me cayo una vez despues de pasar tu reductor de velocidad muy rapido.

Great if you live in US ..... not if you are in Australia! Cannot change maps to Aust.

Got this to replace a 10+ year old Tom Tom. There is a bit of a learning curve to using it, was not intuitive. The on line manual is large and not easily interpreted. I can customer service with a question. Had a short wait for a call back but the service rep was very patient and helpful solving my problem. It has a very good display showing a lot of good information ( and a lot of clutter which I learnt how to dismiss). It give speed limit, your sped, and subtle warning when exceeding the speed limits, school zones and red light cameras. Once you learn how entering your destination is easy as is saving favorites. I like that it turns on and off with the ignition. Very USA centric and National park and Historical site features are only for the USA but can be disables. I have only had it for a few weeks but am liking it more over time, For a dinosaur like me who wants a GPS rather than a cell phone app it is a very good solution. Would recommend it. 76 year old male
