Superb! Fast, quiet and a fantastic upgrade to my previous hard disks. And, very small with no need for external power supplies thanks to the USB-C connectors. Bought 2 and both fit in my laptop case.

Ideal for my new imac m4. Ready to go for Apple mac. Always buy these WD drives as easy to use with my Mac. This one again is well made and great for storage. Or set up for time machine. Your choice. Fast transfer. Bought this as it has the new usb c connector for the new imac m4. Recommend if you have Apple mac.

It is great for mac (I have used it on my macbook pro) and the password protection is easy to set up. Although not major, but I have seen tiny glitches while copying data into it. I have not used it for long (bought it 3 months back) and hence I would recommend this to be your 2nd back-up drive :) I hope you will like my review, if you found it useful please hit ‘Helpful’. No fuss set up - simply plug and play. Does the job as expected. Looks neat and blends well with Apple Mac.

good design

Having installed the HD Ultra for Mac (on an iMac M3, OSX15), I set the format to APFS (case sensitive encrypted) with a password. But it is "read only" not write, meaning I can't drag & drop files to it. Only Time Machine works. It's 7.30pm, Friday. I set up a support account at WD around lunchtime but, at 3pm and within their office hours, the message said they were closed. So no support. WD chat bot couldn't help either. Persevering, I decided to start from scratch, using Disk Utility to erase, careful to click on the top level. Starting over again, I formatted it as APFS & GUID partition map. When done, it had used AFPS (case-sensitive) and not the basic APFS as selected. Time Machine works but no drag & drop. Info says Read Only again Started over again, I formatted it as Mac OS Extended Journaled & GUID. Drag and Drop worked this time but Time Machine needed the new volume deleted. Did this & lost the drag & drop. Whatever is done, unlike my older HDs and SSDs, Time Machine is incompatible with manual storage on this WD My Passport. They want you to install Paragon, third party and NTFS, but neglect to tell you this beforehand, which is underhand. The fact that the drive uses AFPS and not NTFS is glossed over. Macs can read NTFS by default, but they can't write to them without extra software. So the choice is either using it as Time Machine storage only, or manually transferring files as backup. You cannot have both.

Not the fastest in the world for doing big backups to but there's not much room for improvement without switching to SSDs. But in terms of value for money, this thing is a little stormer. The included USB-C cable and adapter is one of the best I've ever used and is very unlikely to slip out of place at any point, since it requires a little force to click/unclick it into the socket of your device. Also works great with automatic Time Machine backups, no fancy complicated software to work out at all. Just bish bash bosh done. Recommended.

Arrived in an unpadded envelope, and product box was so badly mangled I was sure the device would be broken (looked like something heavy had squashed one side). However, I plugged it in, and has been working perfectly (so far). They really should package such delicate products with more care.

Just started using this disk that I bought in july, but today it broke down on me. Unable to mount and making bad sounds. Probably lost all data on it.

UPDATE- This drive that I first reviewed failed within two months. I gave it a 5-star review. So, I bought a second one - and it began having problems almost immediately. I called their tech support, was handed off to a text messaging tech and explained what was happening (the drive LED was constantly flashing) and after trying a few things, they finally said to use my Disk Utility. After I did that, it found numerous errors, once the utility was finished the drive began working properly and I haven't had another issue yet. It was good to know that their tech support was available to resolve my issue. FIRST DRIVE REVIEW: I was using a WD 1T Passport with the original USB connection from practically the dark ages and it was performing so slowly, taking hours to back up. I finally bought this 5T model and it backs up in bare minutes. It plugs directly into my MacBook Pro with USB C. No complaints, it works seamlessly with Time Machine.
