Is there plastic in them?

No there is no plastic in them. I would have never purchased them if was. I make my own bath and body products so, I use the small ones and the large ones. I am very please with the product. I hope this helps.

can this work for coffee, finely ground?

I have heard of people using these tea bags for coffee with success. I would suggest you try a small pack of 50 to test first.
