ATH-M30x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones, Black

The Audio Technica ATH-M30x are excellent sounding headphones in the sub $100 range. I'm using the M30x as a second pair of headphones to listen to music and when watching movies or TV shows on an iPhone, iPad, or through an AV receiver. I wanted headphones that would sound great, be well built, be portable, and yet be affordably priced. In those regards, the M30x delivers. The M30x is a nicely designed successor to the popular M30 headphones which they are replacing. I really like Audio Technica's styling update for the M30x, giving it a look similar to the iconic M50 and newer M50x headphones. Like the M50 and M50x, the M30x now features a collapsible design for space saving portability. Both of those are welcome changes from the dated looking and clunkier M30. A few months back I purchased a pair of M30 headphones, used them for a couple of weeks before returning them, and then purchased the M50 headphones. The design and feel of the M30x is much improved from the M30. ----- SPEC COMPARISON BETWEEN ATH-M30x & ATH-M50x: The M50 and M30 were the most popular headphones in Audio Technica's Professional Studio Monitor Headphone lineup so my guess is that the M50x and M30x will be also so I've written a spec comparison between models. 1. The M30x has a 40mm driver compared to a 45mm driver in the M50x. 2. The M30x has a frequency response of 15-22,000Hz compared to 15-28,000Hz with the M50x. 3. The M30x has a maximum input power of 1300mW at 1kHz compared to 1600mW at 1kHz with the M50x. 4. The M30x has a sensitivity of 96dB compared to 99dB with the M50x. 5. The M30x has an impedance of 47 ohms compared to 38 ohms with the M50x. 6. The M30x weighs 7.8oz compared to 10oz with the M50x. 7. The M30x has a built in cable compared to detachable cables with the M50x. The straight cables are both 9.8'. With a higher sensitivity, lower impedance, and higher maximum input power the M50x are a little easier to drive, are a little louder, and can handle more power before clipping than the M30x. ----- COMPARING AUDIO TECHNICA's PROFESSIONAL STUDIO MONITOR HEADPHONE LINEUP: If looking at other models in Audio Technica's lineup, the M20x, M30x, and M40x all have 40mm drivers whereas the M50x has 45mm drivers. All have a frequency response on the low end of 15Hz but as the headphone models get better so do the higher end of the frequency response, 20,000Hz with the M20x up to 28,000Hz with the M50x. The M40x and M50x feature detachable cables whereas the cable in the M20x and M30x is built in to the headphones. The M20x isn't collapsible while all the other models are. When examining sensitivity, impedance, and maximum input power, as the models get better the headphones tend to increase in dB's, become easier to drive with a lower impedance, and are able to handle more power before clipping. ----- SOUND QUALITY OF M30x & COMPARISON TO M50: The M30x offers excellent sound quality for its price. The headphones produce a rich, clean, and detailed sound with a good amount of bass. I'm really impressed with the sound they are able to produce. Having the M50, I was able to do a comparison between the two headphones. Since many reviewers who own both the M50 and M50x headphones state that the two models sound identical, my sound comparison between the M50 and M30x should provide a good comparison in sound between the M30x and newer M50x headphones. The M50 headphones are a little louder. They produce better bass as a result of the 45mm drivers compared the 40mm drivers in the M30x. The sound from the M50's is also fuller and has better separation. You do get what you pay for but when considering sound to price the M30x offers great bang for your buck. ----- PROS: 1. Produce a rich, clean, and detailed sound with good bass. 2. Affordably priced, great bang for your buck. 3. Comfortable to wear. 4. Attractive design and lightweight. 5. Collapsible for space saving portability. When collapsed they are noticeably smaller than my M50's collapsed. 6. Comes with protective carrying pouch and 1/4" adapter for headphone plug. The 3.5mm plug allows the M30x to plug into smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. The 1/4" adapter allows the headphones to plug into receivers, mixers, and other audio equipment. CONS: 1. The "L" & "R" indicators for the cans are inside the headband area and are hard to see in dim lit areas. I much prefer their placement on the can swivel mechanism with the M50/M50x. I know its minor especially if you just remember that the cable comes out of the left side but I thought I'd mention it. ----- SUMMARY: The ATH-M30x headphones continue Audio Technica's legacy of producing amazing headphones. At the price point of the M30x, they are very hard to beat. If you are looking for a pair of headphones that sound great, are well built, are portable, and yet are affordably priced as I was, I highly recommend the M30x. If considering other Audio Technica models I recommend spending a little extra money and purchasing the M30x over the M20x. The collapsible design is very nice and the M30x allows almost double the maximum input power than the M20x. If sound quality is your concern over price, the M50x is superior with better bass, separation, and a fuller sound. The build quality is also nicer with the M50x. My M50's feel sturdier, the headband extender feels more durable, and I like the swivel feature of the M50 cans. That's not to take away from the M30x because they are well built headphones for the price.

I have used these audio-technica's for an entire year now, and it is amazing! The packaging was very good and the product would not look better. It is plastic construction, so it does clank around when folding it up for transport, but you can't beat the price. The construction isn't the highest of materials, but the quality of construction is great. All joints perform perfectly and there isn't a doubt that these are high-quality. What matters, the sound, is great too. You know what you are getting with Audio-Technica's. I use these to study and play games on, sometimes I just wear them to block out the sounds of my roommates when I need to concentrate. But, when you are listening to music, you get a crisp and clear sound from these headphones. You begin to hear parts of music that you couldn't with your cheap earbuds, and the experience is much much better. You really get lost in what you are listening to. Being so light, your head doesn't get weighted down either, and once they are on your head, they stay there. Something else I love about these is the long cable. I can get up and reach my phone plugged into the wall or a textbook on the ground a little ways away, without having to break concentration or constantly be taking off and putting on these headphones. Solid feature for me, at least. I know some people don't like the length of the cable, but for me I love it. This model DOES NOT have a removable cable, so you can't just buy a different length cable. You are stuck with the long length of this one and you are buying a set of headphones with a long cable. It doesn't really get in the way, but I sometimes step of the cable while getting out of the chair and it rips off the headphones, not fun. But the cables are very sturdy so it doesn't damage it a bit. You may also accidentally run it over with your chair, again not damaging it; I've done it multiple times. Currently a college student with 3 more years to go and I have no doubt that these will hold up. For the money these are great headphones. The ear pads don't beat the lush one's of Beats, but they do what they need to. VERY light on the head and don't compress your head like beats do sometimes. I have a size 8 head and these work amazingly. Can listen to music and study for hours, with no ear pain, since they go around the entire ear. Or you can play games for hours and not be annoyed with the fit. GREAT GREAT GREAT. Audio technica products for life.

These worked absolutely great. They surpassed my company's standards and requirements for being in the building where I worked. So, they are totally comfortable, good volume, all music sounds wonderful in them. Pretty light as well. Worth the value in the purchase as well, too.

It's early to review this product but so far my only regret is not making the purchase sooner. Near complete privacy from the outside and a superior listening experience on the inside. The two jack option and long cable is especially appreciated. These have me wondering how much better can a set of phones sound in this price range? It's also tempting to see how much better a more expensive pair would sound. You know that audiophile trap. "Those Ohm Walsh 4's sound great, let's push the budget..." If there is anything missing in these phones, it's the mid-range. Other than that, no complaint.

These were my second purchase of headphones, after the pair I purchased initially didn't work for me. Unlike that first pair, these were immediately comfortable on my head -- not too tight, not too heavy. I can wear them for an hour or more and not have any fatigue with them. The cord is long, which is good if you move around a lot, less so maybe if you just sit and listen to music. Still, not objectionable, just something to be aware of. Sound quality is good, maybe a bit light in the bass, but not harsh, certainly not boomy. As I said, I can wear these for a long while and not be fatigued. Nice headphones, I'm happy I moved from the other pair to these -- great selection!!

Since everything has already been said about these that can be said, these are some of the nicest headphones you can get for the price. The headphones themselves are a very sleek black design and are a nice matte black finish rather than the piano black that most companies love to use. The build quality is top notch and being able to fold them makes it great for traveling if that's what you're looking for. The noise isolation is not too bad either. I only use these in my room but was looking for a pair of heapdhones that had some decent noise isolation. If my regular hearing is 100%, while wearing these and not listening to anything, I'd say it lowers what I can hear to the 50-60% range so roughly half of the normal ambient noise volume. If you're listening to something even on low volume, you cannot hear anything else outside of the headphones. I also briefly tested noise leak with other people in the room and to my surprise they could hear nothing until the volume was close to 100%. Of course this volume level is different for everyone but that's 100% with Realtek HD audio drivers on a Windows 7 machine which gets extremely loud. I normally use 20-30% for reference. The ear cups fit very close to actually laying over my ears but they fit, making them closed. As for the sound quality, it's always hard to describe exactly "how" something sounds. The easiest way to put it is these sound the way you expect audio to sound. If you aren't an extreme audiophile or know exactly what something should sound like, these headphones will be even better. One thing that may give you an issue is the tightness of these headphones. I came from using JVC HA RX700's which are an equally great pair of headphones. The main issue with those is the break in time. The ATH M30x's take nowhere near as long to break in, but it should be noted that it may take you a few days to a few weeks to get adjusted to how they feel. After you stop fidgeting with them and get them to a height that works for you, sometimes you forget you're even wearing them. Comfort, quality, and sound are all present. If there was any negative I could give to these headphones its the fact that they do sit very close to my ears. If the ear cups were slightly larger it may feel a bit better, but that of course requires a complete redesign of the headphones which were built this way for a reason. Unless you have a very large head or prefer muddier quality sounding headphones such as Beats, you cannot go wrong with these. Pros: + Amazing sound quality + Great build quality, matte black finish, intriguing design + Very comfortable feeling earpads + Good sound isolation, ~50% of sound dampened Cons: - Would prefer slightly larger ear cups

Alright so I grabbed the m50x, m40x and these m30x's... had to compare them all and see which was really the best bang for the buck. I know I'll get a ton of flak for what I'm about to say, but it needs to be said. Keep in mind this review is coming from someone who is not an audiophile; however, I'm pretty sure I know what music is and basics around instrumental mechanics. In addition, I've had all three and spent hours testing them on all genres and games. Do not underestimate this headset (m30x)!!! In fact, if I had to compare these headphones to something specific, I would say they are the Sennheiser 598's (Clarity) and the m50x's (Thump) together. Yes, I said it. Now let the flak begin. LOL The m50x's are borderline amazing. They hit so hard it makes my ears want to explode. That being said, they are uncomfortable when wearing for long periods of time which is not ideal for gamers. The audio hits exceptionally hard and seems pretty clean. Where the m50x's fall short is in the mid range. While wearing them there just always seemed to be something missing and the THUMP was trying to make up for it. The m40x's are extremely flat... which is the intended specification. They sound great with all aspect of music and hit just as hard as the m50x (IMO). I read a helpful review that said making your EQ a "U" shape with these headsets make them into a m50x and I would have to agree. In addition, the m50x is heavier which is part of the concern with comfort. I will say the m40x's aren't the most comfortable either, but they do a much better job because they are lighter. Because of the flatness of this headset, it does miss out on the mid range range for me as well. However, this is a great headset with plenty of push. Especially when paired up with the right sound card/EQ. So... that brings me to the m30x. Um... yeah. For $60 I fell this headset is every bit or better sounding than its older brothers and I'm dead serious. I have an old Sound Blaster Titanium sound card I paired up with my m30x's and BOOM! The clarity was better than the Sennheiser 598 SE's and the boom was just as bassy as the m50x. There will be many folks who disagree, but I've had them all and can speak from experience. The m30x's have the mid range that others didn't, the clarity of higher end drivers and the thump to go with it. I know it's hard to believe a $60 headset can sound better than one 2 1/2 times more expensive but it's simply the truth. Oh and did I mention they are a lighter headset so they feel better than the others excluding the 598's. If you're looking for a phenomenal headset and you aren't wanting to reach too high, grab this bad boy. You won't be disappointed!

My pair came from Amazon's Warehouse Deals, and the condition note said "minor aesthetic damage" to packaging. My purchase price was something like $46 (shipped!), which I thought was too low to resist. I took the gamble. Upon receipt I scoured the well-packaged (unopened) original box, but I couldn't find the alleged damage; meanwhile the product inside appears brand new and has met my high expectations, living up to the excellent reputation of the ATH-M series. I bought these after 5+ years of using a beat-up pair of M35's in my volunteer role as FOH Engineer at my church. That pair of M35's was the first pair of professional-caliber headphones I ever put on, and that was a game-changer for me. I read reviews and considered Sony's MDR7506 and Superlux's 668 but settled back on what i have hands-on experience with. So far, I find that the sound of my M30Xs is a joyous thing to experience, rivaling or perhaps surpassing the old M35's. I am no headphone-phile, but I can tell that a similar contour/EQ philosophy is employed in both sets; dead-flat tone with emphasis in the mids to draw out minute detail in voices and, I find, acoustic instrument character and voicing. In particular, I have been loving these cans for electronica due to the fantastic middle details. Bass tones are extremely clean and legible; but in contrast to pairs of bass-boosted buds and cans will seem quite subdued. These will certainly and effortlessly expose poor bitrates and/or bad source material. Things I love: - Build Quality; in a word, 'Solid'. - Sound Quality; to my ears, perfection. - Design Aesthetic; functional, no-nonsense matte black. Things I do not love (but knew going in): - Cord is long (yay!) but hard-wired (boo!); non-interchangeable. Surprises: - I have huge ears, and the stock pads are too small for me. The cans actually sit on top of the tips of my ears, and after an hour can cause some pretty significant discomfort. The sound is so great that I didn't care, for years- see the update below. Overall: Two thumbs way up (especially for $46!), and a positive experience with Amazon's Warehouse Deals to boot. UDPATE after four years: Wow, these just keep rocking. The sound is just incredible, and the build is holding up great. The pads started to crack last year (so that's three years of normal use) and they were always too small for my ears, so I replaced them with these: Brainwavz Replacement Memory Foam Earpads - Suitable For Many Other Large Over The Ear Headphones - AKG, HifiMan, ATH, Philips, Fostex (Black) . Beautiful, comfortable, and no noticable depreciation to the majestic sound of these headphones. After four years and trying many rivals, I now believe that these are simply the greatest headphones in the world at their price point, Thanks for reading!

Bonne qualité pour un prix tres abordable. Le fil est tres long ce qui est un avantage pour moi car je les utilise pour le streaming et que c'est connecter a un mixeur audio. Les basses sont bonne et les aigues sont clairs. Je peux les porter pendants 3-4h et ils ne me derangent pas.

Ich habe schon einige Kopfhörer über die Jahre durch. Das hier ist wohl bisher auch mitunter der teuerste, den ich mir geleistet habe, wobei meine letzten beiden nur minimal günstiger waren und mich bei weitem nicht so überzeugt haben. Der Kopfhörer ist zwar aus Plastik, macht aber einen sehr stabilen Eindruck. Leichte Verdrehungen steckt er locker weg, ohne dass das Plastik knarzt oder so. Die Muscheln sind mit einem Leder-Imitat überzogen, dass scheinbar in der Sicke vernäht ist, statt verklebt, wie bei vielen anderen Kopfhörern. Ich finde, dass das qualitativ ein wichtiger Vorteil ist, da bei den benannten Vorgängerkopfhörern genau das verklebt wurde und nach kurzer Zeit schlichtweg das Muschelpolster abgerutscht ist. Das bekommt man dann auch nicht mehr ohne weiteres befestigt, was sehr ärgerlich ist. Die Muscheln sitzen angenehm fest auf den Ohren und Puffern bereits einiges an Umgebungsgeräuschen weg. Mein Büronachbar besitzt die Quietcomfort von Bose und war darüber überrascht, wie stark doch die Abschirmung ist. Man muss aber auch sagen, dass der Quietcomfort ein Onear-Kopfhörer ist, während der Audio Technica ATH-M30X ein Overear-Kopfhörer ist. Klanglich kann er dem Bose auch nicht ganz das Wasser reichen, aber ist auch nicht um Welten schlechter - der Bose kostet immerhin auch fast das Dreifache! Als Studiokopfhörer ist der Sound als sehr neutral zu bezeichnen. Ich persönlich empfinde das als angenehm, da ich die Musik unverzerrt hören möchte und nicht in übertriebenen Bässen untergehen möchte. Einige bemängeln den etwas schwachen Bass. Das kann ich so nicht unterzeichnen. Ich nutze den Kopfhörer auch ab und zu für PC-Gaming und finde schon dass der Bass sehr ordentlich zur Sache geht, wenn mal eine Handgranate in der Nähe hochgeht oder ein Panzer feuert. Das massiert schon das Trommelfell. Desweiteren ist das auch der erste Kopfhörer den ich auch mal an meinen Gitarrenverstärker (Marshall AVT-50) hänge, um auch am späteren Abend noch eine runde zu "klampfen". Ein bisschen muss man an den Potis schrauben, dafür klingt es dann aber wirklich recht gut. Das hat bisher keiner meiner früheren Kopfhörer so gut hinbekommen - ich habe in der Vergangenheit lieber aufs Spielen verzichtet - jetzt nicht mehr. Auch wenn es meine Schuld ist (man sollte die Produktbeschreibung halt auch genau lesen): Als Studio-Kopfhörer hat dieser Kopfhörer ein verdammt langes Kabel. Da der Kopfhörer bei mir alltäglich im Gebrauch ist und auch für unterwegs gedacht war, ist das nicht ganz optimal. Darüber sollte man sich im Klaren sein! Ansonsten: Toller Kopfhörer für einen angemessenen Preis! Klare Kaufempfehlung!
