Wonderful building set--our most loved ever
My son received this for Christmas and hasn't put it down since. He asked me to film a video of him in which he described all of its features. He shows all of his friends and talks about it constantly. This set has lots of details, but the base is sturdy enough that he can carry it all around the house and use it as a toy without it falling apart. He has also become quite interested in the history of the real USS Missouri, which is fun for me. It may be the most loved gift he has ever received. I do think the age recommendation is a little off. He is 7 and had it assembled on his own in just a couple of hours. The age range is listed as 8-14 and I'm not sure that most 14 year olds would find it terribly engaging. I was resistant to introducing anything other than LEGO into our home, but my son bought his first Kre-o set with his own money and we've found them to be quite well made. They are much better than other off-name brands we have encountered.

Another mechanical engineer in the making?
When I asked my son for a Christmas gift suggestion for my 8-yr-old grandson, he said E. had recently become interested in battleships, aircraft carriers, etc. since they'd watched a movie together about Pearl Harbor (and probably helped that he knew Dad had been in the Navy when he was "young"). I had purchased toys here before, so did a general search and came across this battleship, which seemed a good possibility. Amazon's price was equal to the big-name store, whose online site had just one photo, size seemed wrong, and was out of stock anyway. I read all the reviews (thanks to all of you!), which left me with just one concern. Because my grandson has an autism spectrum disorder and some reviewers had commented on some problems -- or needing extra adult help -- in the assembly, I did ponder whether E. might get frustrated or lose his attention span over the long period of time required. But this darling little boy (after waiting till the house was quiet on Christmas night at our suggestion) asked to do it by himself, sat for three hours straight, referring to the instruction manual, and only asking for a little help from Dad (a mechanical engineer) in putting the final tiny pieces together! He played with it every day for a week or so and then took the entire ship apart just so that he could reassemble it in his own design this time. (I wasn't there but suspect he used many of his own large collection of real Legos in doing so, as I had told him they were interchangeable when he'd opened the present Christmas morning.) I hope that my relaying of our family's story will not be lost on those of you who -- like us, our child's teachers and counselor -- were quite disturbed by the media's unfortunate coverage of the sad event surrounding this Christmas time as far as ASD children are concerned. For us, it was heart-warming and eye-opening beyond words to witness what could lie ahead in this child's future. I don't expect to be around that long; but privately, just the phone call from him to me that his Grammy's present was his favorite of all brought my own special joy. Thank you, Amazon, for stocking this toy, for its super-saver free delivery on the earliest day of its est. TOA, and to Kre-O/Hasbro for making it.

Awesome kit
Nice break from the Lego kits. Parts are well made and fit together great. The Megabloc knockoffs seam to have a fit problem sometimes. The instructions are Lego style. Very intricate. A lot of small and unusual parts. Put it together with my 11 year old son and it took about 3 hours. More like building a model kit than a Lego set. A lot of cool factors, the guns actually shoot, and the figures are great.Great set, worth the money.

Exceeded My Expectations
Having had unhappy experiences with Lego knock-offs in the past (Mega Blocks, I'm looking at you), I was a bit nervous about buying this for my 8-yr-old son. But he just completed building it, in about two hours, by himself, and had no problems at all. It is holding together nicely while he plays with it, no falling apart catastrophes or overly fragile sections. He is very happy overall, and says in some ways he likes it better than Lego (better minifigures and weapons.) I give it four stars instead of five because the hull is one solid piece. I guess this makes it more stable, and certainly quicker and easier to put together, but it also takes away some of the building experience, which he enjoys. So as a parent, I just wish he had been able to assemble the hull, too, but he is not bothered by this in the slightest. Overall a GREAT value for the money.

Very impressive battleship
We bought this for my 8 year old. I was very anxious about ordering a non-Lego set because I was worried about the quality. However, I am (and my son is) very impressed with this set. The individual pieces are strong and sturdy. It is actually very impressive once completed. It is larger than the Lego Coast Guard ship, and so much more detailed. We both love the attention to detail on this set. It was a good challenge for my son, but he was able to do it without help. The only thing that was a drawback is that the pieces do not come in organized packages the same way Lego sets do, so when the instructions tell you you need a specific piece, it can be very difficult to have to look through 500 pieces to find the one you need.In our house, this set is definitely the high point of pride amongst all the Lego sets!

This in an excellent deal
My son loves Legos/Kreo and so I was excited when I saw this. I paid around $35 for this, marked down from $85. I don't know if it was ever really sold at $85, but this is clearly much more than a $35 dollar set. My guess is that since Battleship wasn't very popular, the demand for these toys wasn't that great, and that drove down the price. That worked out well for me since my son doesn't care about branding, only how fun a toy is to play with. It is a 545 piece, large battleship with aliens- who cares if the movie was terrible. It is elaborately designed, with several interesting figures. For a boy/girl who loves playing with building block toys you can't go wrong with that.

Great idea and too complicated for my 10 year old.
A bit complicated for my 10 year old so it is still sitting in the box. Unfortunately. Maybe when he gets older, we will revisit.
