A bit redundant but informative

Take away message: stop searching for an alternative to fuel your sugar addictionPros:- discussion of all low or no calorie sweeteners- description of the effects of sweeteners on different body systems- highlights the importance of gut biome and the effect of sweeteners on itCons:- repeats numerous statements/claims throughout the book- draws some conclusions that aren't supported by the data presented- lengthy anti-China rant (seriously what was that?! )- science may be presented in a non-approachable way for a casual reader (made it better for me but might be a deterrent for some)I would recommend buying this book as it discusses the uncomfortable truth we've all been avoiding.A new mindset is worth the price and short time it takes to read it. However, you may end up skimming over some of the sections.

thinking that those should be better than honey or maple syrup because they are "lower ...

I have been on a low carb diet/paleo diet for 2 years but gain a bit of weight(I was not over-weighed), so I put myself on a ketogenic diet for the recent few months. I read some keto recipe books and started baking with stevia, erythritol and Lo Han extract, thinking that those should be better than honey or maple syrup because they are "lower in carbs". I had long been skeptical of these sweeteners but a large keto community was supporting these. So I think they should be fine and different from aspartame etc, as they are "natural". Oh, I have so wrong! Thanks Bruce Fife for this wake up call! After all, sugar was a "natural product" extracted and purified from sugar cane. And flour, rice are also "natural" from plant source. Until we found that we over-eat sugar and grains(without most of us being aware of it) that so many people fell so ill. I'm going to quit using these artificial sweeteners now.

I wish I had known!

I had used Stevia at least 10 years to sweeten my coffee, thinking it was a better alternative to sugar or artificial sweeteners. I was shocked to learn that stevia was an “artificial sweetener” hidden behind misleading ads promoting it as a “natural sweetener”. I am thankful to Bruce Fife for this crucial information, I just wish I had known sooner. I would have been better off just using cane sugar! I have thrown out my stevia product and am slowly gaining back my sense of taste that has been so warped. When I want sweet taste I use coconut sugar or raw honey but only occasionally. I can even drink my coffee without sweetener, just cream please, and enjoy it!

Everyone should be aware of the risks

Very informative. Covers all non-sugar sweeteners.

Pot meet kettle

The author seems to be suggesting that there's some sort of conspiracy behind how Stevia has become so popular and that it's all about money. Well this book is all about making money by fear-mongering. I'm a type 2 diabetic and have learned to drink my coffee with just milk and my iced tea with just lemon. But I also make a chilled half-coffee/half-milk drink using Stevia to sweeten it and make it palatable. Recently I drank a helping of this beverage every morning for 11 days, with 0.5 Tbsp of Stevia per serving, and as part of an ultra-low carb diet, slashed my blood sugar over 175 points from 3-oh somehing to 129. Now I know what you're thinking, that's just "anecdotal" evidence. Well, enough anecdotal evidence taken together constitutes bona fide evidence, and there are studies regarding the efficacy of Stevia. So you can go ahead and continue poisoning yourself with sucrose, or you can use an alternative that is actually healthy.

Informative and well researched read.

Very informative and well researched. Made me view all artificial sweeteners in a new light. I feel like I can now make an informed decision regarding my health. I look forward to reading more of his books.

Certainly an eye-opener.

I had always been aware of the risks to health from artificial sweeteners. So when Stevia started being marketed as a natural herb I fell for it. This book highlights that stevia only forms a tiny percentage of stevia products, the remaining percentage being certainly not natural. A check of ingredients in “natural stevia products” in my cupboard confirmed that all contained sweeteners I wouldn’t choose to take. A reminder to check labels. The book is also very clear on the dangers of low calorie sweeteners in the body upsetting sugar metabolism and causing multiple side effects such as amplifying the effects of bad bacteria in the gut. I also noted that low Calorie sweeteners can cause hypersensitivity to sugar. I had a problem with for a while with racing/thumping heart after even small sugar intake without knowing that the cause was the sweeteners.Certainly an eye-opener, if a bit repetitive.

Fascinating and scary

Bit repetative in places but the the previous reviews caught my eye. This is an interesting look at how artificial sweeteners can really harm health. If you drink a lot of diet drinks, like me, this is a must-read book.

Guia interessante

O autor faz uma abordagem geral sobre todos os principais adoçantes e seus efeitos sobre a nossa saúde, inclusive a stevia. Os dois primeiros capítulos são um pouco repetitivos, mas os demais detalham bem o tema escolhido.
