Humminbird, Helix 7, CHIRP MSI GPS G3N

I just got everything up and running to the point where I could use this to fish yesterday. I am a serious angler and just want to fish without too much hassle, no matter what it costs, within reason. I'm impressed and a little disappointed and frustrated. It has been increasingly frustrating as the install has gone forward. It can be confusing with conflicting information about which parts go with which unit. For ease of install, I wonder if one of the costlier models wouldn't be less expensive or even the same cost in the end because they operate without the adapters. I thought this had a Lakemaster chip built-in that would get me what I needed as far as using all of the features this has. The integral basemap only shows depth contours in increments of 10' (Lakemaster shows 3' increments) and there is no option to use the "follow contour" mode without the Lakemaster chip. This ticked me off when I found this out. I would have bought the darn lakemaster chip if I would have known this. This is the major reason I bought this and the trolling motor.I do feel that, although this is awesome technology and the graphics are just as good as advertised, there needs to be a lot more information available from Humminbird. Look at their website and look for adapter cables. It's ridiculous. This technology can nickle and dime you with all of the cables and adapters needed. The adapter cables are anywhere from $30-$40 and the ethernet cables themselves are super pricey as well. It's all quality stuff, mind you. If you truly want to network 2 sonar units for operation of the trolling motor (ipilot link), you will need the ethernet hub at about $260. Humminbird needs to include an in and an out port for networking. Like a basic television has. They have one foot in the future and one in the past. This reminds me of the old Lionel train sets. They were expensive to begin with, and if you actually wanted to have the fun the kids were having on the tv or magazine ads, you had to keep forking out more money.This is still an awesome unit. I like the other models with the "favorite view buttons" I wish I had these on the Helix 7. It would make it a lot easier to navigate between views. I also wish I had opted for a larger screen. The 7" is fine but a little larger would make it easier to view in split view mode. Overall the Helix is very primitive compared to its pricer brothers. if you can afford it, get a 10" screen. I also wish I was using a touch screen. Make sure you have a 32 gigabyte sd card so you can update this thing. It WILL need updates right away.The helix 7 was within my budget and I'm certain that unless it breaks, I will love using this unit for a very long time.

Great product I’m going to enjoy this

Humminbird has made significant improvements over the fish locators I've had in the past, and those were pretty good. An excellent piece of fishing assist equipment, once you understand how to use and read the results. Down Imaging is good and considerably better than my previous locators. The width of the screen is a big plus!

As someone who had a helix 5 and upgraded to a helix7 it is amazing! I’m looking at lakes with whole new prospective just because of the side imaging! You can really find the grass lines, stumps, and rock piles way easier.

Very clear display and easy setup.

A nice, quality unit for the price. I installed it myself and have not had any issues....found a few pieces of cover and structure offshore, then caught a couple of keeper bass. Quite a big upgrade from the original units on my 2001 bass boat.
