Fit's Harbor Freight 4.5 LB Axe Very Well
I bought this to cover the blade of the axe I keep in my trail rig. I wanted to keep the blade sharp, but not have to worry about accidentally cutting myself, others or my gear that I store with it.Based on the dimensions I found in other reviews, I suspected this would fit my axe (4.5 lb Central Forge Hickory Axe / Harbor Freight Part 98096). I wanted to follow up on that and confirm for anyone else considering this match that it does indeed fit and work well.I was initially concerned about the stated "4-6 week shipping time", but was VERY happy that they got it to me in less than a week. I was able to get the axe sharpened up and bring it (safely) along on a camping trip a couple weeks ago. My guess is that they state that lead time in case they don't have them in stock and need to make a batch.I agree with the previous reviewer that I was disappointed with the two sets of staple holes in the back side of the sheath (once I took the cardboard label off). I didn't think they would be as noticeable as they are, and am surprised at how much they stand out. Such a beautiful piece of crafted leather, marred by a poor choice of product labeling. Minus one star in hopes the maker will find another way to attach their name.I'm debating oiling the leather for better weather-ability. The leather looks so good right now, I almost hate to do anything to it and I'd hate to see discoloration around the metal rivets and fasteners. In all likelihood, the axe will be getting mounted to the side of my expedition roof rack (along with a shovel), to make more space in the back for my dogs. I'm guessing oiling / sealing the leather would be a wiser choice than leaving it to the elements. I'll try to update my review if / when that happens.

a very nice and heavy duty cover made from top quality leather ...
In summary, a very nice and heavy duty cover made from top quality leather that could use some oiling with neatsfoot oil, mink oil or sno seal to give it some flexibility, bring out the character of the grain and preserve the leather. The maximum size of the axe that this cover will fit is 5-1/4" bit, 7-3/4" length and 1-3/4" thick. Any larger and the axe either won't fit in the cover.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This cover is made from fully tanned top grain cowhide that is smooth on the outside and rough on the inside. The two pieces of the cover are very nicely stitched and riveted at the bit end and riveted at the butt. The rivets are evenly spaced all around and shows no sign of rust unlike the rivets on some other leather covers I have ordered. There are double snaps at the top to close the cover. All materials and hardware appear to be top quality. My axe is 5” at the bit, 7-3/4” from butt to middle of the bit, and 1-3/16” thick. The axe fits in the cover with a snug fit in length and loose fit in width. The cover snaps close easily as there is ample length in the flap. The critical dimension seems to be the length. Longer than 7-3/4" will either be a snug fit or not fit at all. A bit length of up to 5-1/4” and a thickness of up to 1-3/4” looks like it would fit.Overall, a very high quality product and an excellent value.

I just replaced the handle and did some work on the edge (it was in pretty bad shape due to years of neglect)
I bought this for my grandpas old craftsman single bit axe (this is an old axe, maybe 60-70 + years old). This was my 96 year old grandpas axe that has been at our mountain home since he passed away 15 years ago. I just replaced the handle and did some work on the edge (it was in pretty bad shape due to years of neglect). I wanted a guard/sheath that would protect the axe after getting it back to good working condition. The sheath fit the axe really well (axe measures 7 1/4" x 4 1/2") and appears to be good quality. It is pretty stiff when you get it however, I rubbed it with vasoline (letting it absorb each coat for a total of 4 coats). The vasoline rub darkened the leather, loosened the leather and provided a little water proofing. Overall, I am please with purchase and the price was not bad. There just are not that many choices out there for a store bought sheath/guard and this one turned out nicely. I figured that by the time you make a similar sheath, it was cheaper and easier to buy this one. Peace, PCD

Outstanding! Well built, shipped quickly, fits Stihl Pro Splitting Axe (Oeschenkopf 2500-A head)
I need to walk a lot with this axe and found the mask it came with to be too loose. That's plumb dangerous in the woods. Glad I found the Heritage 1001 sheath here on Amazon! Especially nice to see "Made in USA."The head measurements of the Stihl Pro Splitting Axe are about 7" x 4-3/8" x 1-7/8. That's reasonably stout. The head weighs 5.5lbs. I was concerned the Heritage 1001 sheath would be too small. I found this sheath fits quite nicely -- any larger head would be a snug fit. The only really close fit is the steel sleeve over the throat of this axe handle which took some coaxing to fit through the handle opening in the sheath. After a few fittings it's perfect!Oh, and this axe is a fantastic splitting axe! I'll try to post photos.

Perfect!
This is the perfect sheath for my 4.5 lb. Pittsburgh axe. Upon starting to search on Amazon for sheaths, I was astounded by how difficult it is to find an axe cover that fits a full-size, single-bit axe. There's no standard at all. Some will call a hatchet a camping axe. It's very confusing at times, and not a lot of brick and mortar retailers carry these. But this is just what I need!

Just wow!
I'm replacing my 40+ yr old sheath with this new one. Side by side they are identical in construction. My old one is just a tiny bit shorter in length and was made in CA. The quality.fit&finish of this product is OUTSTANDING. I was going to have a saddle repair guy make me one. There's no way he could make a better one and we didn't even get into the cost. Buy this while you still can....the leather and everything is first class! I too am puzzled why they attached their info with staples into the back side of the product. This sheath fits my 3.5lb Harrold axe head perfectly. I put a 20" long rafting handle on it so it's more compact.

Great purchase, worked perfectly
Beautifully made and beautiful leather. Another review mentioned it was heavy, but it is only because the leather is great quality... and leather generally is heavier than other sheath material.Pros:-Meant for large axe and fits nicely-solid clips-very well made-great quality leather.Cons:-Does not come in other sizes
