About the Author Dr Annie Southern was educated at Oxford University and has a PhD in health science from the University of Canterbury. Her doctoral study looked at women’s experience of mental illness and how it impacted on their career development. She has given talks on career development for counsellors, career professionals, parents and the general public both in the community and through continuing education programmes. Annie wrote on both physical and mental health issues, career development, and the Canterbury earthquakes as a regular contributor to Next magazine from 2010-2011. She has lived through the Canterbury earthquakes in New Zealand and has an interest in earthquake trauma.
