What is the merv?

No exception for Electrostatic filters?
  You mean Elect filters weren't included in their Merv tests? 
  It doesn't mean they arent Merv rated by their own makers &/or independent corps because most filters Merv ratings regardless of material they're made out of are simply based on their standards not actually tested by them.
 Automotive filters have no testing other than makers testing them & advertising their products abilities. We can Google most brands results/reviews to learn what to use & not use. Purolator makes an oil filter that last 20k miles & independant tests verified they actually do reach it too. Just say'n most filters are just independently tested then its best results are advertised by corps is all.
  Some of these Elec filters are in rated as much as 12 merv. Regardless who tests it they better meet it too & they do get tested bet on it. Lawsuites fly, products get pulled quickly these days if they dont reach advertised ratings as false advertising laws do still exist.

how many times can you wash these metal filters

Ours are a year old washed once a month and should last the life of the house, for sure the rest of my life.  30 years +

does it make any difference which side of filter faces the inside of the heating unit

Notice that the description says 6 stages.  Normally in the context of filtration, stages refers to filer media that capture different size particles.  The way it works is the filter layer (stage) which captures the biggest particles is first in stream, with the layer which captures the smallest particles last in stream.  That means that such a filter would have to be directional; it's the only way that makes sense.

So... if this filter is not actually directional, then it probably really doesn't have filtration "stages" at all.  I don't know what the actual story with this filter is, but it seems to me it can't both have stages and be bidirectional.
