Mechanika, Revised and Updated: Creating the Art of Space, Aliens, Robots and Sci-Fi Kindle Edition

Decent look into a technique of illustrating sci-fi, but pretty beginner based. The artist is great! It is inspirational pulp from the likes of Siggraph more than it is a variety pack of methodology, but hey, it's entitled "Mechanika", A mech-nut like myself will love the techniques revealed, and it is a nice glimpse at a single artist and his method, but that's what a beginner longs to see. How the successful guys do it. It is not an exploration of multiple techniques and styles. I wanted more from it, more variety more art, but maybe that's the point. Make more. It is worth the price of most industry based magazines to see this guy's stuff, but again, I wanted more from it. More bang. It was supposed to be "updated". I didn't get that from it. It felt dated, relative to current techniques, but it is something I'm glad I have! I hate giving it just a three. Alot of people could get alot of good info from it. I'll upgrade it to a four! Good technique and developmental drawing is key to good work!

This is a pretty good book. It seems to be focused towards the already skilled painter. I have just started in digital illustration and concepts so it can be confusing at times. Often it'll say things like "Refine your painting" which is an empty statement to new people. It shows step by step methods for various kinds of mechanical/futuristic things with instructions worded to allow the artist to create unique pieces. Good for both the digital illustrator and the old fashioned illustrator.

I wanted to use this book to take my art to another level. I like the content inside and some of it will be helpful. But I wonder if they have a water station they dunk each book in before they ship it out. It was too late for me to return the book. But, I will not let this mishap deter my creativity.

I love this book. It has amazing refference art and is easy to follow along with. I haven't mastered it yet, like every skill it takes practice.Pro: physical books don't depend on internet, or multiple transactions. I love these art books.

Doug Chiang is a legend in Star Wars concept art and this is one of his classics.

Great book!! Love the sketches and process. I am an illustrator and animator, so I'm always on thr look out for great visual development books. I've read about this one from an article of must have books for concept artists and this was one of them.

Bought this for my grandson age 11. He was pleased and immediately started using the book.

The book is a great look a the techniques used by digital artists in he film industry. It contains a rather splendid collections of tips for current and aspiring artists.

Never thought i would use the phrase form divinity original sin 2 but this book, while very well written, is simultaneously a little too detailed and not detailed enough.it goes into great detail about the indevidual steps for each type of design for a variety of mediums, however after a few sections it quickly becomes clear that each chapter is basically the same thing over and over again but for differant things, and somehow manages to skip the vary thing i actually bought ti for, some inside info or advice on the actual DESIGNING part of the process and not the process itself.I am still just as unclear of the things i need to keep in mind and the various approaches or concepts to use when drafting a design for a robot ship or vehicle now as before i bought the book.the book is well written but the content is lacking, glad i bought it for kindle as it was much cheaper and I am less upset about what amounts to process validation if you are looking for a book that details the various stages on the process of designing something thn this is a good choice, if your looking for more intimate informaiton on what to consider when actually doing the designing then look elsewhere.

This is a very comprehensive book. It has a couple of good starting chapters, that will focus your skills. It then moves on to specific fantasy/sci fi types in each chapter.

Beautiful artwork with good clear step by step instructions and sketches. My 11 year old is really into sci-fi drawing so good for him as inspiration. Useful insight into how to colour artwork using digital software.

Unique style, Great designs, how to's and many more combined with Doug's amazing imagination gives you a great book to have on your shelf. Love it! Daniel
