Biology Made Simple

Passed my Biology CLEP test with this! Absolutely worth it.

book was new and clean- exactly as described

so i started going on a binge of buying a lot of these types of books because i was so pleased with organic chemistry for dummies. which if you are taking organic chemistry i really recommend as a must have book. i always make sure to check the reviews first to make sure they are good, but i am always displeased. i end up wasting time i could be spending with my required textbooks from school, or resources and practice problems the instructor provided. if you are in a college level course they are often a bit too simple. such as this book. it skims over and maybe lightens up some details you might find useful, but a hardcore biology course goes into the real nooks and crannies of biology which you just cannot get from a 200 page summary book. i dont know what everyone's classes are like, but i know that your ultimate goal in a class is to be able to answer test questions and bring home those A's, and i dont believe this book provides resources to answer any of the tough questions presented in a serious college level course. also a lot of professors base their tests around the book they require. just read your required book and if it doesnt make sense read it again, and if it doesnt make sense, read it again, and if it doesnt make sense, read it again. that is my rant.

I bought this to go along with my Intro to Bio class and I must say that it helped me out. I didn't use it as often as I could have but, the times I did,I wasn't disappointed.

I bought this book because I thought it has did a job of making complicated biological concepts a lot easier to understand. It was a little disappointing because it didn't meet that expectation. This book will be great for middle school though.

I purchased this book to establish some background knowledge before taking on more,in depth biology books. A subtitle reads "No nonsense knowledge." Here's an excerpt:..."All plants undergo alternation of generations. They switch from diploid generations to haploid generations. The diploid plant has two complete sets of chromosomes. Instead of producing gametes the diploid plant undergoes meiosis to produce haploid spores. Plant spores divide by mitosis to form a plant structue in which each cell is haploid."The terminology here is not clarified, and if if was defined before it was earlier in the book because by the time I got to this passage, it didn't make much sense. Further, this is not "no nonsense knowlege." How useful is the excerpt above in my life? Chapters 11 and 12 were more along the lines of practical knowledge, as the author used language and body functions we could relate to. Alaso, the end of the book was like the beginning: Much technical language not always clarified, and not a lot of practical knowledge. This book, for the most part, did not explain biology in a language non-science majors could understand.Also, the glossary was pretty much useless--it leaves out words like "molecule," and beginners need to see those words clarified. Also, there are no textbook aids, like bold words, marginal notes, or understandable illustrations. The book just falls short of its objective: It is not biology made simple.My recommendation to the author: Write the book in language like each intro pargraph, which is clear. Clarify technical language in plain English. Make each chapter relative--apply to things we understand, like the chapter on skin, which was well done.Pete

This book is very adequate for independent or adult learners to receive a fast but scientific input. At the end of every chapter you can check whether you got it or not...
