how do you mount it to the wall as I don't get to see the back side of the product?

I screwed a gorilla type molly hanger into the wall, screwed a screw into the molly, drilled a hole into the Corbel to receive the screw and put construction adhesive on the back of the corbel to secure the piece and keep it from moving about. I used this for a decorative shelf to hold a candle. Needless to say it’s not going anywhere😎

Can these be placed under a mantle?

It will Not Hold any Weight but for the look, (aesthetics), Yes. I painted and age/distressed it then attached it under a marble (well supported) overhang, and is just gorgeous. Endless complements!
