Q: Do I need anything other than a microcontroller (such as an Arduino) and a PC, or do I need some other hardware to get this thing working?

You don't need nothing more that a microcontroller, but just keep in mind that the fingerprint scanner comunicates at a 3.3V level, so it is recommended to use a voltaje divider if your microcontroller uses 5V, like Arduino, unless you use the Arduino Due. If you need documentation how to do this I can send

496 Bytes (template) + 2Bytes (checksum)

I'd say under 5 seconds, as long as it recognizes the finger print it's pretty quick.
