Ready Player One centers on a young outcast named Wade Watts. In the near future, Watts escapes from his daily drudgery by logging onto an MMO game called 'The Oasis'. When the game's billionaire founder dies, he offers players his fortune as the prize in an easter egg hunt within The Oasis. Watts gets in on the action, and then after five years, finds himself facing off against corporate foes who will go to any lengths to get the money -- in both the real world and in The Oasis. He chooses to race the Back To The Future DeLorean throughout the competition. His gaming name or ID is Parzival, so he changed the plate from OUTATIME to PARZIVAL. ECTO 88: The white California ECTO 88 License Plate is produced as described in the 2011 science fiction novel Ready Player One, a New York Times bestseller written by Ernest Cline. In the novel, the license plate on Parzival’s DeLorean is said to be ECTO 88, while it appeared in the 2018 film as PARZIVAL. Since we are big fans of the book and all of the references to 1980s pop culture within, we reached out to Ernest Cline to determine which state and style of license plate he pictured on the car as he wrote the novel. He is super cool and quickly replied that he had envisioned the mid-80s California plate and there would be no hyphen between ECTO and 88.
