Yes, these photo sleeves are acid-free.

How durable are the sleeves? I plan to use them in the classroom and would like to know if they will hold up to the amount of traffic they will see.

For use in the classroom, you should look at something else. These sleeves are perfect for photos that are going into an album, but not strong enough for daily use. I hope this helps.

Would these be too tight to slip in a 5 x 7 mat into that size sleeve?

the actual size of the opening of the sleeves I have is 4 1/4 by 6 1/4.

I'm looking for protective photo sleeves that i can spiral bind into autograph books. Are these durable enough and have enough space for this?

I think it would depend on the size of your pictures or items. These fit 4x6 photos with not much room to spare. They are durable enough for storage of photos but I have no idea how they would hold ip to spiral binding.
