Question 1

What is polishing compound used for on a car, and how does it help improve paint clarity and gloss?

Accepted Answer

Polishing compounds typically contain chemical cleaners, fine abrasives, and polishing oils that remove minor paint defects while enhancing gloss depth and shine. Polishing compounds are great for light swirls, haze, light oxidation, etc.

Question 2

What does car polish do, and when should I use it instead of wax or rubbing compound?

Accepted Answer

Pure polishes without abrasives provides additional depth of shine. Rubbing compounds remove paint defects like swirls and scratches, while waxes add a protective layer to the paint and clear coat to help defend against environmental elements.

Question 3

How does rubbing compound for cars remove paint defects, and when should it be followed with polish?

Accepted Answer

Rubbing compounds have abrasives that remove a microscopic amount of paint and permanently remove paint defects like swirls and scratches. For maximum shine and gloss, use a polish or glaze and follow with a wax, sealant, or coating for protection.

Question 4

What is plastic polish used for, and can it restore clarity to cloudy or scratched plastic surfaces?

Accepted Answer

Plastic cleaner polish, like Meguiar's PlastX, removes light to moderate defects in clear, uncoated plastic like headlights, convertible top windows, and gauge clusters. They enhance clarity and remove things like swirls, cloudiness, and yellowing.

Question 5

How does clear coat restorer work, and when can it improve faded clear coat versus when repainting is required?

Accepted Answer

A clear coat restorer is essentially a compound that uses cleaners and abrasives to remove paint defects. If oxidation is light to moderate, a compound should restore clarity, but if the clear coat is too damaged, repainting would be needed.
