THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL JOURNEY
which the talented and admirable writer, Arnette Heidcamp, leads the reader through - namely, the first months of a Hummingbird's life, from the beginning of winter to the advent of spring.Ms. Heidcamp has amazing expertise in both bird and plant life, and what one appreciates also is her great love of them both. One wants to thank her for this lovely book and for the precious photographs which accompany it.Throughout the book, the reader gets to know Squeak more and more, to understand the habits and traits of this darling hummingbird, and to realize what an intelligence it has. Ms. Heidcamp is dedicated and devoted and, yes, the ending is sad. I have to admit I shed a tear or two as a reader saying goodby. I can only imagine what an emotional time Ms. Heidcamp had to go through, after fostering this hummingbird so carefully and intimately, when the time came to set Squeak free.I have alredy got several of Ms. Heidcamp's other books lined up to read, and even signed up with Random House to get an e-mail notice when she has a new book published.I can't praise this wonderful literary and photographic pursuit highly enough. Reading this book was a true joy!

Both heartwarming and scientific
This book is almost magical with its improbable events and beautiful photographs. The information about hummingbirds is excellent. A must-read for anyone who loves nature and real, everyday, miracles.

Wonderful book!
A very interesting account of a hummingbird who fails to migrate and overwinters in a sunroom—-as the feathered guest of a woman who, luckily for him, is hummingbird-savvy!A little too much detail for me at times, but overall, I was cheering for him and his hostess.

Heart warming story of a hummingbird and its saviour
This book was initially given to me after severe head on MVA and I loved it then. It is a very heart warming story of a humming bird that almost died and the lady who saved it. Both lives were changed. My grandson also loves humming birds as does his best friend. I gave them their own copy.

A very small Squeak!
I bought this as a gift for my 90 year old mother on Mother's Day this year. It was a lovely little book filled with informative facts about hummingbirds based on the author's true life experiences with these small birds. She also covered the emotional aspects of having a hummingbird living in her sunroom and what she had to do to keep him alive & well. The photographs in the book were taken by the author too, so she covered all the bases!I think the only negative thing I could say is that when the book arrived, it was much smaller than I had envisioned. The size made it hard to see the detail of all the photographs...and Mom is 90 years old...

A BEAUTIFUL BOOK ON A LITTLE HUMMER "SQUEAK" AND FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPHY TO ENJOY TOO ! ! !
What a joy this little book is ! ! ! The photography is exceptional and so beautiful, of little "Squeak", the hummingbird in the author's home over the winter. This would make a wonderful gift to most anyone that enjoys the little birds around their home. I will share my book with friends and family and continue to enjoy it even more, myself. It is a quality book on heavier glossy paper stock. I also like how the author gave the correct names of the flowers Squeak enjoyed and went to, throughout the winter in her lovely home. This book is worth every cent ! ! !

A dream come true
For everyone who has fallen in love with hummingbirds at their backyard feeders, this true story stokes the fires under the dream: I want a hummingbird of MY own! This little book chronicles the amazing adventure of one woman and her winter houseguest, a hummingbird she calls "Squeak." Her heart went out to this little guy who apparently missed the southward migration urge, who will surely perish in the U.S. East Coast icy cold Winter season without human intervention. Natural Selection be darned, she entices the little guy into her orchid hot-room where through trial and error she develops an all-consuming schedule of bathing, misting, feeding, and finally touching one of Mother Nature's most untouchable birds. This book now sits beside my Hope Ryden collection of animal behavior books about beavers, coyotes, and wild horses on the read-at-least-once-a-year shelf of my library. A truly wonderful experience!
