Austin AirFR400A Healthmate Standard Replacement Filter, Black

I just bought, two used Austin Air HM-400 machines, and tried them out with these new filters from Amazon. These filters are high quality, just like the Austin Air units themselves. With coronavirus, allergies, pets, cigar smoke (my bad habit that I confine to one room of the house with an exhaust fan), and an asthmatic boyfriend, I need all the help I can get with improving air quality. Austin Air delivers. I’ve owned four other air purifiers, none have left the air smelling this clean. The machines clean the air very quickly on high in a normal size room. These machines will save me money over time not having to replace filters as often. I found out one of the machines I bought is 24 years old. It works just like new. The filters are worth the price.

I have Austin Air HealthMate Air Cleaner, color sandstone. This is the OEM filter for the unit. My original filter had a white outer pre-filter. This was not in stock, so I ordered this filter with a black outer pre-filter. It looks perfectly fine. I actually like it better because I can see dust on the pre-filter easily and know when it needs to be vacuumed off.The original filter has lasted us 7+ years. I can't remember for sure when we bought it and we only run it 5 - 6 months per year (cold weather when windows are closed). Hopefully this new filter will last just as long. The price is pretty painful but it is high quality. The aftermarket filters are also expensive but quality is unknown.

The filter is fine, but required some aggressive work with a hammer to make it fit my antique model. Compared to the previous replacement filter, this one had metal where the old one had fiberboard. I suppose this would be an upgrade, except that the designer apparently didn't consider the placement of some bolts on my 15 year old Healthmate; hence the need to put some serious dents into the filter. The previous replacement filter had the same problem, but the fiberboard had more give to it. It is my unscientific impression that the new filter is not as quiet out of the box as the previous replacement filter was (based on my 5 year old memory), but maybe it's just my machine getting older; or different room acoustics. Perhaps another owner can offer a second opinion.

We have pets. Lots of pets. 6 dogs and a cat and fish (well, the fish don't really count as far as air purification is concerned). We have 3 Austin Air Purifiers running 24/7 so our place doesn't smell like doggy day care. I know people get nose blind, but everybody who comes to the house can't believe how fresh it smells. We hadn't replaced our filters in a LONG time, so purchased 3 of these and they are running like champs. They arrived in a timely manner, well packed. I wish they weren't so danged expensive, but when you replace them every 5 (or, if I'm being honest, 9) years, I guess the price spread out over time is more reasonable. If you have a Healthmate that needs a new filter, this is a good place to get one, and Prime shipping will help with lowering the cost.

Bought one and it came all dented and damaged so sent it back and made the mistake of buying another one before I got a refund from the first. Spent $80 to ship it. Never got any response from company and no money back. Then the 2nd one I received had a horrible odor to it when turned on. Thought maybe after a few hours it would get better but after 10 hours still stank up the room. A very expensive air purifier and expensive filter that is worthless as the whole idea is to clean the air not make it worse. Buyer Beware it is a rip off!

I love Austin Air Cleaners. My allergies are really helped, in fact sometimes my breathing improves dramatically on highly allergic days when I turn the air cleaner on high. I have had 4 since 1995 & have carefully cleaned & then replaced filters every 5 years. I finally bought this one as one of my four wa getting weaker. I can’t live without these filters.

Just replaced my second filter (5 years per filter) and hope this filter lasts me another 5 years too. The unit does come with the pre-filter so you don't need to buy one - you should change the pre filter out once per year. The filter came packaged fine although the weather stripping that is on the bottom of the filter wasn't perfectly round and perhaps got moved around a bit during shipping. Installation takes 5 minutes w vacuuming out the unit and getting rid of the old filter and pre filter.

It came wrapped great but the unit was dented in at the bottom similar to pics another reviewer posted. So far the filter seems to be working well; will update with any changes.
