ADC Standard Diagnostic Set with Otoscope and Ophthalmoscope, 2.5V, Fitted Case, Proscope 5210

This ADC set (ADC #5210 Standard 2.5V Diagnostic Set) is great for medical students. Several of my classmates ended up shelling out over four Franklins for a Welch-Allyn set. The WA set has an awesome warranty, but I couldn't justify paying that much money for something I wasn't going to be using that much. Aside from the difference in warranty, this set drives its light at 2.5V whereas the more expensive WA sets drive theirs at no less than 3.5V and are probably brighter. Saying that, I had no problem looking into people's ears and eyes with this ADC set. Given its performance and cost, I'm very happy with the set. The ADC set includes the battery holder (2 C batteries not included), the ophthalmoscope head, the otoscope head, 3 permanent specula (each with a different size opening), 10 disposable specula, and the disposable specula adapter. It all comes in a relatively sturdy rubber case. Like I said earlier, this set is perfect for the medical student who is already several thousands of grand in debt and is going to get limited use out of an otoscope/ophthalmoscope diagnostic set. If my interests eventually steer me into a residency where I'm looking at the holes in peoples' heads everyday, I'll invest in a top-of-the-line diagnostic set then.

I'm a first-year medical student and I purchased this set without any knowledge of how to even use an opthalmoscope or otoscope. Now that I've finished training, I've been able to compare this set with much more expensive sets ($300+) as well as wall-mounted instruments and it has worked comparably well if not better than all of them. The case that the instruments come in is sturdy, but a bit too big for the pocket on my white coat, so that's really the only downfall. Overall, I'm happy with it and many of my classmates have now purchased it as well.

I put 2 C batteries in and turned on the light for 10 minutes max. It worked fine, but I noticed that the otoscope would get really hot. I dismissed this and tried to use it the next day. The light would not turn on no matter what I did. I tried replacing the batteries and letting the otoscope cool down. I missed the return policy by 2 weeks and the seller will not fix the issue despite this being their problem. I would not recommend this in a million years. $140 down the drain as a student is devastating.

i used this as a third/fourth year medical student. the image quality is not as good as its welch allyn cousins but good enough to visualize what you need to see. IMO the ophthalmoscope is comparable image detail with standard welch allyn heads, certainly more detail than you need to see as as a medical student. it's great to use for practice on patients or friends when there's free time. the otoscope is actually worse than welch allyn heads because it's a simple magnifying glass mounted on a otoscope head which makes finding and focusing on ear drum a little more difficult than the welch allyn standard. still, both these heads are portable, reliable and i've passed it on to another friend to use after i've graduated. lastly, the light bulb on both the ophthalmoscope and otoscope are not as bright as welch allyn but is powerful enough to visualize what you need to see. in sum, a good product at a entry level price that's affordable for any healthcare student whos trying to balance loans and education expenses.

Although not in the medical profession I have used an Otoscope for years in my business as a locksmith. Since my existing scope was well over 20 years old I started looking for a new one. Also wanted to ad an ophthalmoscope to my arsenal as well. Of course I'd like a fancy Welch-Allen but decided to take a chance on the ADC scope set. The handle feels good and I especially like the bayonet lock for the scopes. Looks to be a very good product for it's price range.

As a medical school student, I needed to purchase an otoscope and opthalmoscope. Why they make every student purchase these, I will never know. Anyways, I didn't want to spend $500 on something I would rarely use so I bought this set. Right off the bat, I could tell that it wasn't as high quality as the Welch Allyn scopes, but what do you expect for 1/5 the price? When I first started to practice the fundoscopy, I could see the red reflex, but nothing else. I tried over and over, but could never see the any of the fundus. I began thinking that this scope was pure crap. A professor asked me why I couldn't still see the fundus and I told him that I expected that it was because my scope was crap. He took the scope from me and was looking at the fundus within seconds. He showed me what I had been doing wrong and ever since, I was able to see the fundus even better than most students who have the expensive WA scopes. There may be a little different technique that is needed for this scope compared to the WA ones, but once you get it down, you can see all the vasculature, optic disc, etc. quite well. One other big downside is the sheer massiveness of this set. It came in a giant zipper case that, while very protective, is extremely cumbersome and is very portable. Also, because the of the batteries that the scope uses, it itself is quite large and heavy.

Cheaply made but good for price. Can visualize the eardrum perfectly.

As a PA student who needed a diagnostic set but could not afford the $700 top of the line models offered by Welch-Allyn, I looked all over the internet for the best cheap alternative. I settled on these and when it came time to learn and practice th fundoscopic exam they absolutely failed at the task. The light is visibly less bright than the WA sets, and shining into the eye did not allow me to visualize anything besides the red reflex. Immediately afterwards I picked up a WA set and was able to visualize the vasculature, optic disk, and macula. I experimented with the ADC set further but had no success whatsoever. I did find, however, that the Otoscope was perfectly sufficient for use, and I actually prefer the ADC head to the WA one. This is why I give the set 2 stars. I had to return the ADC set and bought a used WA set for about 300 dollars. It was a pain in the wallet but several months later I am now practiced and moderately skilled with the equipment and do not regret the decision. To any other students out there in a similar situation I would recommend doing the same. The 2.5V is simply not enough in my experience to illuminate the retina.
