Black & Decker CHV1510 Dustbuster 15.6-Volt Cordless Cyclonic Hand Vacuum

I've tried several products like the Dustbuster over the years (in fact, I've used and this versions of the Dustbuster), and this may be the best of them all. Power. With 70% more power than model CWV9610, this 15.6 Volt Dust Buster is a suction monster, scooping up small rocks, coins (remove those first), leaves, small wrappers, and other vestiges of daily life. I've been notorious (in some circles) for using my car as a trash barrel; my reputation is now as unsullied as the Honda. While it won't pick up dust on the dashboard (I tried, the particles are too fine), everything else is fair game. Depending on debris size, I use it rightside-up, or flip the device to get the nozzle closer (to a carpet, for example). Yet, for all that power, I've never had the Dustbuster overheat or otherwise shirk from its duties. Attachments. Along with the versatile standard nozzle, the shaft arries a crevice tool (handy for tight spaces), and a sall brush attachment (for speed and convenience, especially on upholstered surfaces). These attach easily and work superbly. By the way, the crevice tool extends the reach 50% more tham model CWV9608. Ease of Use. SOmetimes you sacrifice features for convenience; here, they complement each other. As stated above, the extra tools attach to the nozzle, the nozzle itself twists on and off easily with two little buttons locking into place. Depressing the buttons (with just a light touch) releases the nozzle. I didnot find the machine too heavy. If you can lift a bottle of laundry soap, you can easily work with this (see main page for weight and dimensions). The on-off control is conveniently located on top, right near the plug for the battery recharging unit (which you store separately). Energy Efficiency. Sure, you can call it trendy, but I like using electronic devices that have earned an "Energy Star" power-saving rating. From one charge, you'll get about (my estimate) 30 minutes of continuous use. There's no "low power" indicator, you'll just notice that the suction is not working as well. Within a few minutes, it will power off. Ease of Cleaning. It couldn't be easier! The dirt and debris collects is vacuumed up into the body of the Dustbuster. You just take the nozzle off and shake the plastic-like cover of the conical dirt collector into a trash receptical (other than your vehicle, boat, small office--a real trash receptical, that is). Take the cover off, and you can wash the cover and the hard plastic cone-shaped bowl. The only contact I had with the guts of the machine was when some leaves were too large to fall out; while I could have fashioned something to fish them out, I just swiped them out with my fingers. Bottom line. Don't expect shop-vac power from this, but it is one powerful and effective handheld device, superbly designed, and offered at an excellent discount by Amazon.com. Dependable (it has a 2-year warranty) and sturdy, it's one of the best appliance purchases I've made in quite a while. It may take you a while to grow accustomed to your cleaner environment, but, trust me, after the initial shock, you'll feel proud of yourself.

I have a very lightweight low-profile standup vacuum cleaner. It doesn't have any attachments for getting into nooks and crannies, so I needed something for getting between couch cushions, getting into corner, and picking up the occasional spill of cat litter. This black and decker handheld does the job just fine. It is powerful and the shape of it makes it perfect for getting into corners. Between this and my stand-up I'm able to deal with just about any mess. It comes with a wall-cradle, but the cradle does not function as a charger. The charger is a separate plug and cord, so after hanging up this hand-held you need to remember to plug the charging cord back in The battery life is a bit disappointing, but I don't consider it too much of a downside. For the small messes that I use this vacuum for it works perfectly fine. For big spring cleaning projects you're going to have to plug this in from time to time or else you're going to run out of power quickly. The big downside of this product, though, is the noise. My god the noise. It sounds like a freight train chasing Slayer through a tunnel while air-raid sirens go off. If you live in an apartment with thin walls... or thick walls... or even soundproof walls, you better have understanding neighbors. I also highly recommend wearing some form of earplugs if you intend to use this for an extended period of time because my ears always ring after using this. This is a useful, inexpensive, and surprisingly powerful little vacuum that is only slightly hampered by a less than ideal battery life. It is LOUD, but if you can put up with that then I recommend giving this a shot. If you need something whisper quiet then look elsewhere.

Ever since we switched to hard wood floors dust bunnies along the edges of the hallway stand out horribly. I'd grab a wet paper towel and clean them up rather then drag out the big vacuum. I'd always think that if I had a small long hand held vacuum it would make this clean up quicker and easier. I bought this and it is working exactly as hoped. I installed the bracket in the laundry room and can grab it quickly to pick up the visible dog hair and dust. I am 5' 10" so still need to bend a little to have this reach the floor but not much, it has an extending nozzle that gets me within a few inches of the dust. My floors look pretty good between regular cleanings now. Also as I walked around draining the battery on the first use I found it was useful for a lot more then what I bought it for. Window sills, air conditioner ducts, under the refrigerator, inside drawers, behind doors. I am now using this to get the out of the way places before I do my regular vacuuming, this is letting me leave the accessories behind so that I'm not wrestling with them as I vacuum. I even tried it on the dog and while she was a little antsy she did not takeoff. I haven't tried it in the car yet but expect good results. I was hesitant to buy based on experience with an older dustbuster. The design of the old one with the larger nozzle and the shorter length just did not make it as versatile or useful as this one seems to be. Battery life: I saw a lot of complaints in the reviews about battery life. I charged it as instructed for 24 hours, the instructions say to completely drain the battery on the first use so I went around the whole house (<3000 sq ft) I got along all the edges, did most of my window sills, got behind the doors etc... I would turn it off as I moved from place to place so am not sure how long the batteries lasted but think it was about 15-20 minutes. Whatever it was plenty of juice to get a lot of cleaning done. After recharging I left unplugged allowing me to grab it as cleanup was needed. I used it like this for a week probably grabbing once a day for a couple minutes of cleanup. Sunday I grabbed it and got under the beds and furniture for about 10 minutes before the vacuum slowed so I plugged it in for it's next recharge. I am more then happy with the battery life. I imagine if you were using this to clean numerous cars or trying to use it as your sole vacuum the battery life would not be adequate. Ease of use: Buttons are in the right places, the handle is comfortable, the unit is not too heavy. The nozzle extends a bit and it also fits nicely into the window tracks. The brush works but just barely, bristles could be longer. Emptying and cleaning is straightforward.

I got this little guy on sale for about $40.00 Having said that, though, if I'd purchased this at full price I would have given at least one less star. The weight of the vacuum is very light. I use this primarily for cleaning my chinchilla cage. They are infamously known for their almost-nonstop pooing--plus hay is part of their daily diet--so cleanups are a regular deal. The extender at the end of the vacuum (which, for those who have commented being unable to keep it in place, you just extend it fully out, and you'll hear a snap) is very nice for those hard-to-reach spots. I've noticed this tool in particular helps pick up small things (like clumps of little poop) that the vacuum minus that engage would not. What's also great is it's bagless and cordless (except when you're charging it), so once the cylinder is full, you simply unlock the nozzle and dump out the debris. I have never used the brush, so I can't comment about it either way. My beefs. I followed the directions and charged the vacuum a full 12 hours (it may be 24, either way I charged the entire amount). I realized after a couple of hours that the vacuum was set to "On." I did not switch it; it came that way. I paid no attention when beginning the charging because I've never had an appliance be in the On mode upon delivery. Realizing it I immediately turned it off. That may have played a part in what I explain next; I'll never know. After it was fully charged I put it to work. The suction power was impressive; it was pulling up hay, hair, and every other loose bits from my pet's cage in no time. I continued vacuuming for maybe 7 or 8 minutes when I heard the charge--as well as the suction--begin to drop. The vacuum was engaged 10 minutes max, if that. I turned it off, opened the canister and dumped everything out, thinking that may have contributed. I closed it, turned it back on, and still the dying suction and battery life remained. I found it very odd that even though it had a great deal of battery left, the suction itself was already dwindling. Finally, after about five minutes, the suction was all but gone, while the vacuum's battery continued its slow, dying whirr. I decided the best thing to do was let the battery fully die before charging it again (maybe it was a first-time fluke?). Though there was no more suction, the vacuum sat idle for another 15 minutes before the battery finally died. I know some of you may be thinking the hay/other debris could have contributed to the slow battery & suction. I thought that too. Next time I decided to vacuum other parts of my house entirely--nothing with the consistency of what's in my pet's cage--and the suction and battery diminished in identical fashion.....always the suction goes first, then the battery. I don't understand why it is. Perhaps I should try cleaning the filter more thoroughly. I specifically purchased this vacuum because I was looking for pet-cage cleaning vacuums and someone commented they used it for their guinea pig, so I thought it'd be a good fit. Perhaps I just got a half-dud (when it's in full power it works very well). I just wish the suction would last as long as the battery...even if the battery is disappointingly short.

I wanted to wait to write a review until I could run this thing through the gauntlet a few times and see what it was all about. I'll rate it according to the following categories: Battery/Charge Life: 5/5 After about a month of use (maybe 2-3 times a week and 5 min per use) I've only had to charge it once and it is still on it's second charge. It performs well all the way up until it dies. Meaning once you can feel it starting to slow, you had better hurry up! But at least it doesn't start dying and then last 3-4 uses at half power. I'd rather it perform at full power and then die quickly. So 5/5 for battery life. Plus how hard is it to plug the thing in to charge it? Come on. Power/Suction: 5/5 I wanted something to quickly clean up after my 8-month old when she throws shredded cheese and rice puffs all over the floor while eating. This is perfect! It has no trouble sucking up the little puffs, cheese, etc. that a baby might throw down while eating. I also wanted something to clean up kitty litter that gets tossed out of the box. Again, this works perfectly. I haven't tried it in my car or on anything too bulky, but I assume that it would do a similarly fine job as long as your expectations are in check. 5/5 for suction (my needs were met, at least). Ease of Use: 5/5 For one, it feels great in your hand. Well balanced and sturdy. The "dirt trapper" is easy to disconnect and dump. You just press the two buttons on either side of the arm where it attaches to the base and viola! off it comes. From there, the filter is also easily accessed and cleaned. I especially like how the blue color disguises the trash/dirt while still allowing you to easily see when it needs dumping. One last "feature" that I don't use much but is pretty cool is that the arm can be set to be used at many different angles simply by holding a button while twisting to the desired position. Not to mention that the arm can extend for the hard-to-reach areas. All in all, straightforward and easy to use while still feeling well made. 5/5 Looks: 5/5 Call me vain, but I wanted a vacuum that looked cool. This one looks great. I like the white on blue and the shape of it. It doesn't look (nor is it -- in function) bulky or clumsy. Obviously it's plastic, but it's nice, sturdy plastic. 5/5 That's it. I would definitely recommend this to my family and friends and wouldn't hesitate to buy another one should the need arise. Your needs may differ from mine, but this one fit the bill for me and I could't be happier for the price ($45).

This portable unit was working quite well for us till the rechargeable battery stopped charging after almost 1.5 years of daily use. But when it was working it sucked pretty good (sucked in the good way). Its lightweight, easy to handle, fairly easy to take apart and empty dirt contents, and had a sufficient battery life up and until it (internal battery pack) gave out after the mentioned 1-1/2 years of use; we never had a complaint with this very handy unit up to that point. The vacuum's battery when now charged holds only a full charge for 5 seconds of full power, and then instantly the power drops (voltage) and suction is virtually non existent at lower power. Okay fine, we liked this vacuum, so lets go ahead buy a new battery. But then that's were we encountered the most frustrating and we believe the "dealbreaker" for our "dead" vacuum. You can no longer replace the rechargeable Nickel Cadmium battery pack part; Black & Decker (B&D) ceased manufacturing the replacement part for this unit and other "sister" models of their Dustbuster model lines using the NiCd battery. NiCd batteries are a significant concern with regard to proper disposal as it is a very toxic pollutant to the entire earth environment. This is probably the reason why B&D no longer supports making a replacement. All conscious consumers should avoid buying any product with NiCd batteries. STICK with the newer tech LITIUM rechargeable batteries ONLY in such consumer goods, its more expensive, but helps us all, PLEASE! So what to do? You can either buy a new identical one or find a special electrical shop to build a new battery pack, which is technically feasible since the battery can be removed with some simple tool work - but extremely impractical as far as cost and time (see this link for battery rebuild - "http://www.fixya.com/support/t7332493-change"). Heck this vacuum may seem like a good buy at around $40+ on Amazon, but do you really wanna buy another one of these "future landfill bricks" and do the whole thing again in year or so. If your environmentally conscious like our family the ideal of disposing of a NiCd device is not an option. By law (at least in Pennsylvania) the NiCd has to be disposed of at an approved recycling facility;which we will obviously be doing with ours. There is no denying that the vacuum works great when it works and recharges fully as new. But regardless the one star we gave is justifiable in our opinion as in this day of age you simply shouldn't purchase appliances that have the possibility of a short useful life - only to end up as a potential hazard dump to our planet. Its simply unforgivable. The only way we could support this product for someone is if they plan on using it less then a few times a month and cannot afford to spend money on a better model (keep reading below). So what to do? Well if your planning on using it daily, we strongly suggest you spend the extra money and buy Black & Decker's 16 Volt MAX* Lithium Ion Hand Vacuum Model #CHV1410 ( BLACK + DECKER CHV1410L 16 volt Lithium Cordless Dust Buster Hand Vac ). Yes, at $88 on Amazon its double the price! But you get what you pay for, and in this case, the litium battery will last you infinity longer then the NiCd battery. Save the planet and avoid the toxic albatross of the CHV1510 model. If your concerned about saving your wallet too (we don't blame you) just purchase a CHV1410 from Walmart which currently sells for $59, which is $29 cheaper then the present Amazon price. I don't mind supporting Walmart at this time anyway as they seem to be recently joining the "greater conscious wagon" of treating their own people like human beings instead of potato sacks. Amazon you should sign up too ;-)

This 1510 replaces a 7 year old Dustbuster that I really liked. That machine died a slow death, first because the contacts got a bit mashed, and partly because one day it just wouldn't charge. Period. Dead as a doornail. Of course, replacement parts are no longer available. I researched the new Dustbusters. I noted that the 1510 is identical to the 1410 except for the color and a slight increase in power. I opted for the 1510 because I could get a "used" one through amazon at the same price as a new 1410. The description said that the item would come repackaged. Nothing was said about dents, scratches, etc. Well, the package arrived and it was the original packaging. The machine looks as if it were never removed from the box. The instruction manual has a wrinkled page, as it had been removed, looked at, and not-so-carefully replaced in the box. So it appears that I saved more than 10% because of a wrinkled page. I can live with that. Now to the machine. It is way more powerful than my old 9.6V, as one would hope. It sucked things up very well. The telescoping extension wand is longer than the one on the 9.6V and really helps extend both your reach and the places IT can reach. The manual said to let the thing run out of juice after charging it the first time, so I did, but I did it mainly by vacuuming here and there. When the power ran out, I emptied the thing and was amazed at the dust bunnies and other stuff that it had sucked up. Wow! I did have a little trouble popping the thing apart in order to access the filters, and I wasn't quite sure I put the paper filter into the filter holder correctly, even though I THINK I followed the instructions. I am hoping that the clips will work better as time goes by. As for noise, yup, it is definitely louder than my old 9.6V, as other reviewers noted (or complained about). On the other hand, the batter is in the 1510, where it was in the base of the 9.6V, and that is a big advantage, at least for me, since the contacts were part of the problem with the old machine. Also, I don't plan on vacuuming my whole house with this device, so the noise is very tolerable for short periods of use. I really like the telescoping wand and the attached brush. I had read about problems with the wand closing itself when a bit of pressure was applied, but I tried pushing it and had no problem. Maybe B and D heard the complaints and fixed the problem. Though I have only used the machine once, I would recommend it. I would note that I ordered an extra filter from a source on amazon but not fulfilled by by amazon because (a) it was cheaper, and (b) it is being sent from a state where there is no amazon warehouse and thus they don't collect state tax. (I do, of course, pay state income taxes on internet items not taxed at the time of purchase....) I have one other comment: I read a lot of the reviews on Dustbusters and and asked/answered questions, both of which confirmed what I preach to my children (and anyone else whom I can get to listen to me): READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!! The ones for this little machine are not very long, and definitely instructive. Many of the questions and concerns that people wrote about are in that little booklet. If my opinion of this Dustbuster changed, I will post any necessary revisions.

I bought this over a month ago. Was worried at first about the "charging factor & the Suction" as other reviewers spoke about. We have 2 dogs, one that sheds so much you think we have 5 dogs. Bought this to clean around the corners, edges of our floors that are hard to get to with the regular vacuum or the fast "pick-up" First: "Shipping" It arrived earlier than scheduled date. No issues with package. Second: "Holding it's charge" So far no issues. Used it around the house, right out of the box, without charging it, until it died. Then charged it for a little over 24 hours. There is no light to tell you if it is charging or if it has charged in full. I was surprised at how long it held its charge. Just on 1 charge & no I did not time how long it lasted. On 1 charge it lasted for several days of running it around the problem areas of our house. I will mention we have a 1200' house, that is all hard wood. Third: Suction/power. I have had no issues with the suctioning power. got it for the dog hair, & other small fast pick ups" I have picked up dog food & macaroni as the picture shows. Also stuff as fine as 10x sugar & coffee grounds. What can I say it works for what we bought it for. I can get under edges of cupboards, skinny hard to reach areas with no issues. Fourth: The "collection bin" There are 2 ways to empty the bin, Removing the white end and shaking it. And yes you may have to get your hands dirty if you have a lot of dog hair. Or you can remove the bluish clear bin from its base & remove the filter, Which is what I recommend as this way you can make sure the area around filter is clean, if this area gets clogged, it will effect your suctioning. Fifth: ease of use, no issues with the little attached brush, well except my own stupidity as I did not "click" it into place, once I figured that out no problem. The extension wand makes it so I do not have to bend over that far to reach the ground. CON: the cloth filter ( under the grey hard filter does get some "fuzzies" (like pilling on flannel) on it after gets you brush it clean a little bit. Not sure if washable yet, So for the price I would recommend this. It is a small, easily carried portable vacuum. It is for simple jobs, lightweight jobs. Attaches to the wall without issues

This hand vacuum is AWESOME!! Living in an apartment with mostly wood flooring means that I don't really need a big, heavy vacuum but this small, light option is exactly what I needed. I have two long haired cats and this is my BEST FRIEND when cleaning off furniture, or anything else where they have left piles of fur. The extendable nozzle is a dream, and makes cleaning the sides of couches/chairs really easy. The small flip brush is good and really does help lift and pick up hair but it could be bigger and more sturdy (mine snapped off within 3 weeks). I use it every day, multiple times a day to tidy and clean EVERY SINGLE room in my house! I LOOOOOOVE that it recharges and I can quickly grab it and take it anywhere I need to clean up in less than a minute. I don't know what I'd do without it!

I have had literally 60 hand vacs and none of them last in a commercial setting. This one is the best I have ever had. The Good: - most powerful one I have had - the brush is attached and flips out - there is a built in extension wand - most painless one to empty - ergonomics are fantastic The Bad: - it comes with a wall hanger but you have to physically plug it in instead of having contacts that charge automatically when cradled. - Same crappy battery, waiting for one with lithium ion so there is no memory effect.

Looks well made and has very good succion power. UPDATE August 2017 =I have been using this vacuum cleaner regularly for 8 months now and i am still very satisfied with it .Good product UPDATE : November 2017 I have had this product for less than a year now and vacuum does not work anymore, brought it back under warranty they gave me a replacement .The model they gave me is not even the same model it is a inferiour model and completely different .Hopefully this was a mistake because im not happy at all .COME ON BLACK &DECKER ??????

This vacuume was so handy. My intial taking was 5stars because I loved it. However I have now changed that because we soon found that it did not hold a charge very long. Got to a point I couldn't vacuume for more than 90 seconds without it losing power and suction. Had it less than 6 moths before throwing it away. With a dog and a toddler who is a messy eater, I guess I just need something more durable.
