Professional Results Without the Professional Pricetag
We absolutely LOVE this machine! My husband and I purchased this beauty about 6 months ago and cannot rave about it enough. Like most people, who need a good deep cleaning, we have kids and a giant fur baby that constantly contributes to the never-ending messes that pop up on a weekly basis. It arrived in a timely manner and in good condition. FYI, if you don't have the upper body strength to lift a heavy 3 foot box, find someone to save yourself a serious backache. Once we were able to get it out and inspect everything, we immediately put it to the test. By the way, it comes completely put together and they included 3 little bottles of cleaning solution to try out your new machine! So here's my honest opinion of this little miracle worker: Pros: 1. The suction on this bad boy is AMAZING. 2. With the right cleaning solution, those deep, set in stains come right out. 3. The dirty tank is easy to empty and clean out due to the design of it. One of the corners is contoured and made to pour out that nasty water without making a horrible mess everywhere. 4. There's an extremely helpful little gadget on your deep cleaner that will keep spinning when you're cleaning and stop when your dirty tank is full and you're out of clean water. Which is super helpful if you're so into watching how much yuck is being pulled out of your carpet that you never catch when you need to refill and empty them. 5. VERY user friendly! I cannot emphasize this enough! Soooooo easy to use! While pushing forward, you pull the trigger all the way until you hit your stopping point. Then let go and pull the machine back over the same path. And presto change-o, you go from drab to fab! I had very old set in stains, so I did what many other reviewers suggested and went s-l-o-w-l-y. I also made two passes over the same spots. The results were still unbelievable. 6. The upholstery attachment is much better than you would expect. I have had the unfortunate experiences with a few deep cleaners that were not nearly as good as the Big Green machine, but what was worse were the upholstery attachments. They never had a good suction to them and in the end I would just toss them out and resort to other means of cleaning my couches. The "magic wand" as I call it, works wonders on my chairs, sectional, and my kids' mattresses! I have even taken my BGM outside and deep cleaned the inside of my truck. 7. The results are comparable to a professional cleaning. Even though you pay a hefty price for this machine and like me, you tell yourself, "For that much I can hire someone to do it instead." If you only use it twice, it pays for itself. I use it almost every week and the finished results are amazing every time. Con: 1. That's right, only one con, it's kind of heavy. You definitely get a little workout when you clean with it. That's it. Overall, I'm 200% satisfied with this purchase and 1000% satisfied with the results every time I use it. Do yourself a favor and get this thing. It'll be a great investment and you won't regret saving all that money you would waste on a professional doing it for you. I wish I could find the before and after pictures to show you the difference one job makes, but of course, I can't find them. UPDATE 9/1/2025: It's been over a year since we purchased this beauty and it's still delivering professional results! The machine is super easy to clean, especially if you use a little bleach or an environmentally friendly alternative. This helps get that dirty water smell out of your tank and keeps your BGM well maintained. Even though it's strongly recommended to only use Bissell carpet cleaners, I have used a few others (because I'm cheap and don't like paying for the expensive stuff, lol) and it still works great. Well worth the upfront cost of the machine and we would have paid twice the amount for a one time professional job. Needless to say, this deep cleaner is worth it!

So Far SATISFIED! LOVING CLEAN CARPET!
I've owned this machine almost 3 full days. We have shampooed our living room and have started on our bedroom and dining room carpet. I really am super grossed out of how bad a carpet can get when you are a neat freak and you clean and vacuum regularly. Shampooing on the other hand will now happen more often since purchasing our own shampooer. So far I say the machine is tops! However with longevity of the machine I can't say. Let me first tell you proof is in the photos and I really am ashamed to share them however it's the reality of carpet owners all over the world. Carpets get gross even when you are a clean housekeeper it just happens and even though no one wants that to be their carpet it is. Okay it's recommended for this machine use by bissell and myself for good reason. Buy the Bissel Stain Pretreat in the spray bottle before you begin. I also bought the oxy boost by Bissell that is safe for all shampooers says on the bottle. Make sure to only use Bissell products in this machine. Vacuum the carpet with a clean vacuum make sure the filters are clean and take your time vacuuming. We shampooed our living room with the provided Bissell professional deep cleaning 2x ultra solution. I used a Bissell pet and spot treatment on the areas that were high traffic. After the shampooing I was super bummed. It didn't impress me at all. I thought our carpet is either ruined or this machine isn't good. And I was in the 1 star rated peoples experience category. So I called bissell and wasn't a fan of the man's statements or advice he said the pet and spot treatment is the same as the pretreat and to use it. Also said I need to shampoo the carpet a minimum of 3 times letting it nearly dry or completely dry between shampooing which I agree with that part because it's been a few years since shampooing. (steam cleaning by a professional) by the way steam cleaning isn't deep cleaning. I said the pet and spot cleaner is the same thing? He said it was. I said so bissell is bottling the same thing labeling it different to scam people to buy more products. Then he changed his wording and said it's a different formulation but just use what you have. Anyways I had written bissell also but hadn't heard back yet so I used my gut and went and got the pretreat before saying this machine wasn't good. I also got the oxy boost. I sprayed the pretreat over the whole carpet lightly and heavier on the high traffic area and shampooed for the 2nd time. At that point I felt the carpet was cleaner than with the professional steam cleaning. However I shampooed a 3rd and final time and it feels and looks amazing. We are very pleased and it smells great! This cleaned spots that the professional couldn't budge. We stopped at three cleanings. So when doing the dining room I have only done it one time and that's with the pretreat the deep cleaning solution and the oxy boost. We had an area we never realized was as bad as it was until the furniture was removed and I'm grossed by this room. It's a pass through we have used it to sit in maybe 5 times in 4 years. Literally it's not used. This room was worse than our living room which we always use. My photo is from only 1 cleaning with this solution. This proves that the products used was the answer. I am still shampooing it 2 more times before I'm done. If we are removing all the furniture then we are going to make sure we do it good. The machine goes together well and is heavy but easy to use. I'm a weak person and it gives me a little workout. I'm sweating by the time I complete a room but it is a professional style machine. It needs to be heavy to do heavy work. My husband said it isn't heavy to him but he's stronger than me. He said feels like pushing a vacuum to him. Haha! Is it worth the money? In my opinion as of now yes as long as it holds up longevity wise. If our house was empty the cleaning would be done within a day or 2 but with furniture needing moved from room to room and energy wise this is going to take a few more days for the whole house. So with 3 days that's $90 plus tax worth if rented. Plus after all the gross stuff this picks up in a home that I know isn't a filthy home. I don't want other people's germs brought into my home when cleaning the carpet. So far it's worth it and I know what filth it's sucked up. We also cleaned our throw rugs and clearly can tell it did a great job. They look strange to us cause it cleaned them to look like new different rugs. Our home is around 1400 sq ft I believe? We have 3 bedrooms, living room and dining room. I would say 3-4 bottles of 22oz pretreat would do our whole house and rugs with the high traffic areas that we have. Tips make sure to use the right products and treat the carpet as directed and take your time. If you haven't shampooed in a few years shampoo let it dry repeat until the water improves averaging 1 time per year or year and a half of time not shampooed. 3 or 4 years 3 or 4 shampoos. Use hot water don't boil or microwave Pretreat (I rubbed the pretreat in with my hands on bad areas) let sit at least 5 minutes We sprayed the water moving forward we sucked going back. We stopped and moved slower across bad areas and we sucked over the wet carpet 2 more times getting as much water out of we could per each shampooing. It also shortens dry time and gives a better clean in my opinion. Let dry at least 2-3 hours with fans on them before repeating We washed each part of the machine very well each day after use. Be sure to clean around the brushed area of gunk from the carpet that collects there that will surprise you how much collects. Let completely dry before putting furniture on the carpets. Wood stain can run and metal can rust on carpet. Be patient. It's a huge job and if you don't do it often you need to give it fair time to take care of the job. Remember carpet wears just like clothes do. They may be clean but may not look new that isn't the machines fault. After shampooing and carpet is dry use your vacuum and go back over it all to lift any pieces that the deep cleaner lifts and leaves behind. Sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor and the super soft fluffy clean carpet. The photo with the bay window lamp and fan is before and after 3 shampooing The water was 2nd shampooing The photo collage without the fan or lamp is the dining room before and after only 1 treatment 2 more is being done before stopping.

Stunning Results!
Firstly, I have to say that I am -was- a huge fan of the Rug Doctor. We've rented the Rug Doctor many times over the course of a few years after out carpet cleaning machine died. We did like the Rug Doctor, but when you add up the costs associated with it, $25-30 base rental + $7 for the hose, as well as the cost associated with running to the store to get it and return it, let alone the hazards associated with the last people who rented it and didn't clean it when they were done (pet hair EVERYWHERE). Either way, we certainly thought the Rug Doctor was good until we purchased this Bissell. As others have mentioned, it picks up to much more water and leaves your carpets much drier right after going over them. It's been about a year since we rented the Rug Doctor. We went over the carpets in one direction and just for kicks we went over it in the other direction (vertical and horizontal). We got so much more dirt out of our carpets than we would have ever gotten with the Rug Doctor! It was just as much gross as it was amazing! This Bissell Big Green is very easy to use and comes with everything you need to get going, including 2 small bottles of solution and a sizable hose for spot cleaning. I would HIGHLY suggest you purchase additional solution (I used the Bissell Deep Clean-dark blue bottle) if you have more than 1-2 rooms to do that have really dirty carpet. I did three moderately sized rooms and had to refill 5 times. This may seem like a lot, but I went over everything twice or even three times in high traffic areas. Even with the extra passes, the carpets were dry very quickly. After the carpet completely dried, the carpets look amazing! Before they were starting to look different colors across the carpets, and now they look uniform again. The carpets are soft, correctly colored, and vibrant. There even is a nice sheen to the carpet. I do think it pullet the carpet back up where it was more pushed down from excessive traffic because it looks better than it has in years! I do have two of my three rooms on a second story and had to move the carpet cleaner up the stairs. The machine is heavy! I took off the dirty and clean water tanks so you basically only have the machine itself and it was a slight bit heavy to haul up the stairs. I don't know if it would be doable for everyone without assistance. For the three rooms, it took 5 refills of water/solution and about three hours. Make sure you do read the directions! I was not holding the dispense button enough, which did cause for a little extra time because I redid that area. You are supposed to move forward holding the button and then move backward over the same area still holding the button in a slow manner to allow the spinning brush to do it's job. Then release the button and go forward and backward to get the excess water sucked up. Reading the directions first will surely help cut down your time. Overall, if you are on the fence about purchasing this machine, just do it! I thought about it for a few hours and ended up just purchasing it. When you consider how much it costs over time to rent a not so great machine (now that I see how much better you can get with this machine) and time time and effort required to go get it and take it back, as well as the convenience of having your own machine if you need a quick cleanup, it's totally worth the cost. I would HIGHLY recommend this carpet cleaner, it really DEEP DEEP cleans! Fair warning: I have only had this machine for about a week and used it once. I was just so amazed that I couldn't wait to write a review. If I do run into anything, I will be sure to update this review.

The Best Carpet Cleaner You (Us Residential Users) Can Buy!
We (wife & I) have owned this Big Green for a few weeks now, and I have used it three times. We owned Hoover's top of the line carpet cleaner for three years prior to this purchase. Here is a quick comparison of the Hoover to the Big Green: > The Hoover is less expen$ive. (You DO get what you pay for, though!) > The Hoover is lighter, making it easier for my wife to use. Its only good point. > Big Green picks up dirty water LOTS better than the Hoover. in a word, Big Green Sucks (in a GOOD way)! It was tedious to try and pick up all (er, most) of the water laid down for cleaning with the Hoover. This resulted in days of drying time. Not good. > The hoover has an independent cleaning solution tank (for a total of three tanks), which means you can lay down as much cleaner as you would like, and then use the clear, hot water to rinse. Big Green only has two tanks, the clean water tank (which you add cleaner to), and the dirty water tank which is where all the dirty water gets sucked into. > Big Green is much faster. Because the Hoover does not suck nearly as well as Big Green, you must go excruciatingly (painfully... agonizingly... I could go on...) slow with the Hoover to recover most of the dirty water. I can clean carpets in 1/4 the time with Big Green, compared to the Hoover, simply because it has better scrubbing action, and suction! > The reason we ended up buying a Big Green after only three years of Hoover ownership, was the roller brush drive belt was worn and about to break. I tried to buy the drive belt from Hoover, but they are out of stock. A Hoover Customer Service person told me I could not back-order the belt, and I should just try back in a month (unacceptable!). The local Hoover dealer told me the belt is no longer made (out of production), and suggested I file a warranty claim, and in his experience Hoover would simply replace the unit with a (similar) brand new one. So, let's sum up the Hoover problems: 1) Doesn't work too well in the first place (slow, and poor suction); 2) Can't order a simple replacement part; 3) Hoover lied to me about the availability / discontinued status of the drive belt. 4) We didn't feel good about contributing a perfectly functional carpet cleaner to the land-fill because of Hoover's big-corporation attitude towards streamlined profitability at the consumer's expense (They don't stock parts). We donated the Hoover to Good Will. What I like about Big Green: It does a better job cleaning carpets. It is much faster at cleaning carpets. It leaves the carpet much drier, resulting in less than a day needed for the carpet to dry (typically dries in 12 hours). My tips for Big Green Users: 1) Carpet cleaning is a patience thing, and cannot be rushed. If your head is in rush mode, drop carpet cleaning and go do something else, until 'your head is in the game'. 2) Go slow and steady. Avoid sloshing the dirty water in the dirty water tank. Bissel's dirty water tank is a two-piece design, which does not seal as well as it should. If you jerk the machine around, while trying to go fast, or get around obstacles, it WILL leak out dirty water, leaving dirty water spots! Slow and steady wins the race. 3) I have been using Bissel's Pet Pro Oxy Urine Eliminator formula. and it gives great results. With time, I will try other formulas, and report back. We have an older cat and white carpets (need I say more?), which is why we are big fans of any oxy type of cleaning formulas. 4) Bissell recommends two caps of formula added to a tank of hot water. I now use between a 1/2 - 1 cap of cleaner. It works just as well with less cleaner formula. I have found that too much formula leaves the carpet stiff. And... Too much cleaner left in the carpet makes it attract dirt faster. < Straight from the Hoover instruction manual. 5) I use hot tap water in the clean water tank (per Bissell's instructions). We keep our hot water at 140°, at the tap. I have not experienced any problems (with Big Green's flow indicator) using 140° water. 5) I overlap my cleaning passes by 1/2 width. 6) Bissell's instructions say to hold the spray trigger and go out and back (one wet pass), then release the trigger, and go out and back (one dry pass). I make one wet pass, and then two dry (vacuum only) passes. 7) Bissell instructs you to continue to make passes until the solution being pulled up appears clean. I can't tell the cleanliness of the water as it comes up, but I keep making passes (in the same area) until the carpet looks clean. 8) I now add a rinse pass. after completely cleaning the carpet, I now add clear hot water (NO cleaning solution added) to the clean water tank, and I make a rinse pass over the entire carpet The rinse pass has no (well... minimal) overlap, and I do one wet pass, followed by only one vacuum pass. The rinse goes pretty quick. If you think you did a good job cleaning the carpet with cleaning solution, wait until you see how dirty the water is from the 'rinse' pass! Dirt never rests... Summary: Yes, Big Green is pricey, and heavy, and it has its little quirks (the dirty water tank can leak, IF you are not careful). So far, it cleans carpets better than the several carpet cleaners we have owned and rented. Would I buy it again? Yes. In a New York minute. Time is valuable to me. Even though it has its little idiosyncrasies, it is the fastest, best carpet cleaner I have ever used. Yes, you really do get what you pay for. Recommended!

Very impressed
When I first bought my home, there were some pet stains that the owners could not remove. I did not have time to clean it myself, so I hired a "professional" cleaning company. Needless to say, I was not impressed. So I rented the Rug Doctor and after several passes, I was able to remove the stain. I continued to rent the Rug Doctor over the years for my carpet cleanings and had been pleased. The last time I used one, I did notice the carpets were somewhat stiff. I am going to attribute this to the fact that I may have used too much cleaning solution. Then spring came around again and I wanted to clean the carpets again. I had stains from drinks, heavy traffic areas and again some pet stains. I own two lovable cats, who sometimes like to leave "love spots". I went to my local grocery store to rent the Rug Doctor and they did not have any machines available. I went to several other stores and could not find one. Someone told me to try the Home Depot or Lowe's. I went to Lowe's and they had the Bissell instead of the Rug Doctor (RD). Never having used one and very unsure that it would perform as well as the RD, I decided to give it a try. First off, I noticed the rental rate was higher due to the "deposit" required. I loaded it into my car and home I went to give it a try. I am not sure if it is lighter or easier to maneuver than the RD when removing from my car. I followed the simple instructions and off I went cleaning the carpets. One of the things I noticed was the cleaning solution is applied in both the forward and backwards movements. Cleaning was pretty straight forward and exactly as I expected. First mistake I made was dumping the dirty water. I slipped and dropped the dirty water all over the floor. Quick fix, use the vacuum aspect and suck up the water. Another positive I noticed was the filling of the water. No more filling a large bucket and dumping it into a smaller fill slot. You fill the bucket, which removes and add solution, tighten the cap and place it back on the Big Green. No more water saturated lines on the carpet when I pour too fast. Place the empty container that will collect the dirty water on top, secure the latch and off you go. I have read that people are experiencing "clumps" of dirty hair, etc when using the Big Green. The ONLY times I notice this is when I fail to vacuum my carpets thoroughly first. I also noticed that the suction is somewhat better than my vacuum, so it is picking up cat and human hairs (that vacuum cleaners can and do miss) and depositing them on the carpet. No Problem, just pick them up. As a note I noticed this as well with the RD, so it is NOT a specific problem to the Big Green. You must vacuum before using the cleaner. The other major positive was the drying time using the Big Green. It is MUCH less than the RD. So I purchased this on 6/22/12 and opted for next day delivery. I ordered this mid-morning to mid-afternoon I believe and by 9am the next morning I had my Big Green. Less than 24 hours for shipping! I opened the box, removed a few cardboard packing materials, removed the bottle of solution from the tank, filled it with water and off I went. No more than 15 minutes total from unpacking to cleaning. No assembly required!!!! I am happy with my purchase. If you are familiar with using a RD, the Big Green is similar in size and maneuverability. This is not a small upright vacuum size. For me it seemed to maneuver easier than the RD. It removes stains, leaves your carpets feeling great and dries faster than any other cleaner I am aware of. The Bissell cleaning solutions smell nice and are not over powering. Pros: cleaning capabilities Less drying time Carpets feel soft ease of use Cons: cost, rather expensive but worth the cost for thorough deep cleanings

I LIKE it.
It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. The carpets had seen better days of cleanliness. The old Hoover had died under warranty but they no longer make that model. So we had the purchase price in hand but no carpet cleaner. What to do? What to do? WHAT TO DO? Research and buy a different cleaner was the only recourse short of paying a service or renting - both so gauche and demeaning. As a self-made DIY amateur, the best bang for the buck based on good old Google searching and the fantastic fanatic reviews on amazing Amazon, led me to the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner. The first drawback I experienced was sticker shock; I had never spent this much on a carpet cleaner before. The old favorite dead one was easily $100 less but alas it was no longer available to me - unrequited. Sticker shock be damned, on with the purchase after weeks of deliberation and ever-so-gentle prodding from my lovely wife. The order was placed. The dice was cast. Would it measure up to expectations? Would the detracting reviews be more correct? The mystery was afoot; only delivery and a test run would provide the answers. The BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner arrived. I could barely contain my excitement to unpack and test the beast. Unpacking and assembling for use was very simple. To my chagrin, in my zeal to start the test run, I failed to remove the two pieces of cardboard and the bottle of cleaning fluid stored in the recovery tank. The oversight became obvious on the run to the commode to empty the test collection. A bonehead move to be sure. How could I have completed a test run without using the provided fluid, you ask. Simple, I had other cleaning fluid on hand because I wasn't certain any came with the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner. Despite the potential of being asked to surrender my MAN card, I admit I DO read instructions and manuals - just not all at once - and definitely not all (obviously) prior to operation. Sure enough, it was in there. So, here is the first bonus and positive point about the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner - it comes with a small bottle of concentrated cleaning fluid - most likely enough for a once-over of several rooms. Other operational observations: The BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner delivers as described in most of the positive reviews. It does a good job cleaning the carpet. Dirty carpets will require more passes with it - the dirtier the more passes required - or perhaps more patience than I have in laying down a pre-treatment or applying the solution and waiting a bit before collecting. My carpets dried in good time; I didn't notice any excessive wet or damp spots. I measured the capacity of the dispensing and collection tanks on the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner before use - perhaps a bit overly scientific or some might say anal. Then during use I observed that the collection level was just a little lower than what was dispensed. I am very happy with this. Multiple passes helped pick up water but only to a point. There is a small view port on top where you can observe the fluid collection; when it stops "spotting" you've picked up about as much as you can. On the negative side, it is a little loud. I'm no audiologist but I don't think hearing protection is required. Your significant other will be able to sneak up on you while it is in operation. If you have a weak bladder or queasy bowels, appropriate adult protective garments may be in order. You can yodel, belt out opera, rock, or your favorite nursery rhymes whilst operating and probably not notice how bad or good you really are - but keep in mind that it isn't so loud as to drown out your voice so that others won't notice - they will - and they may comment. If you have thin skin keep this in mind. One must pay attention when seating the dispensing and collection tanks. Only once did I fail to do this. I almost immediately noticed the little observation port wasn't showing any incoming fluid. I stopped and checked - re-seated the tanks and went right back to work. The BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner is a tad cumbersome to move around but during operation I had no difficulties. During my initial marathon test run cleaning, my my back was negatively influenced - it started to ache. I attribute this to my extended test run time and my propensity to not take breaks. It is also cumbersome to carry up/down stairs for storage. I am an average male. Capet cleaning is my household duty; my wife has not had the opportunity to play with my toy yet. Overall, I LIKE it. Alas, I cannot love the BISSELL Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Professional Grade Carpet Cleaner as my carpet cleaning heart love will always be with the no-longer-offered Hoover it replaced.

Combats pet dirt and kiddo crud.
I have 2 huskies and 3 boys. I’ve have shark and Hoover carpet cleaners. This is my 1st Bissell. Because the other 2 only last a couple years, I decided to spend a little extra and go for a more professional model. The first thing I noticed was the cord length. It’s long so you can definitely do larger spaces without having to find another outlet. Only down side-It can get in the way. The tank that holds water is large and keeps your hot water hot. It also had the solution cup built right in. A total win when you need to measure and can’t find the original cup to add solution. The waste tank is large. The only thing I don’t like about it, it doesn’t seal very well and dirty water drips out. The upholstery attachment is pretty long and works really well. Lots of suction to get the water out. Only thing I can recommend for this, rinse it out in the bath tub. It is somewhat heavy but I think it works to its benefit to get the dirt out. As for cleaning, I think it really did a great job. I used it on carpets I just cleaned 6 days ago-ya know gotta see what the new toy can do-and I was really impressed and pleasantly surprised how much more doggie dirt/dander and kiddo grime it got out. The amount of moisture left behind wasn’t really a ton. My carpets were dry in about 2 hours. This really worked well on my area rugs too. Overall, I’m impressed and pleased with this purchase. It’s worth the money.

This will suck the low hanging fruit clean off a rhinoceros... BUY IT!
I bought this machine in 2015. If you want the cliff notes, just stop your search and buy it. I don't know what kind of sorcery Bissell used when creating this machine, but this is THE ONE. We use it on all of our carpets at least 2-3 times per year. Each time the water it sucks out of the carpet is black. We go over them a second time... gray water... third time... clear water. Not all carpets will need that many passes... where there's light traffic, one pass is enough. Heavy traffic, 2-3 times does the trick. This machine laughs at pet messes, like 20 dogs with liquid poo for a week on your carpets, wine spills and crime scenes. Where a lesser machine fails (spoiler... all of them will), this machine says 'hold my beer'. It comes pretty much ready to go out of the box. It's easy to set up and get rolling. I read a few reviews on here say you need to take apart the brush head to clean it... nonsense. We've never had to do that. If you have pets, you can run your hand around the brush and get all the hair out. If you have OCD, take it outside and use a garden hose to squirt it clean. In a decade we've never had to take it apart to clean it... do not listen to those reviews. I also read other reviews where they docked a star because it takes some time and patience to really get the carpets clean. That's not fair as that's how the machine is supposed to be used. It's not a vacuum cleaner. You can't just run over your carpet real quick with it, like a vacuum, and expect it to do a good job. You should move about one foot per second forward with water/cleaning solution flowing, then one foot backward with the water flowing. Then go over it again without water (suction only) at the same pace. They explain these instructions with the unit. Follow them and you won't be disappointed. My parents recently had a dog with an upset stomach puke repeatedly on the same spot of an expensive 8x10 carpet. Instead of calling me, they took the carpet to a 'professional carpet cleaning' place. They said they dipped it in some solution, power washed it, then commercially cleaned it. They needed help putting the carpet back down tonight and I went to help them. When I opened the bag, I nearly gagged from the smell that came out. It smelled like a bathroom door on a tuna boat that had never been cleaned. It was awful. We thought maybe it was just residual smell that would air out once it was down... WRONG. A couple hours later the whole house smelled awful. In came my ten year old Big Green Machine. I went over the carpet twice and the water was all black. I questioned what the 'professional' even did (probably went over it with a cheaper box store machine once or twice and called it a day). We went outside for 10 minutes after I was done to clear out pallets, came back in and the house smelled fresh... carpet smelled clean upon putting my nose directly on it. My parents went onto Amazon and bought their own machine on the spot... and they'll be reaching out to the 'professional' showing them the photos attached to this review requesting their money back. I advised my old man to go over it a second time tomorrow... the water will probably be nearly as dirty... and do it a third time or until the water is relatively clean. BEWARE... this machine will suck the low hanging fruit right off a rhinoceros. I would not advise older men to use this machine while commando. It is the ONLY carpet cleaning machine I will ever use. One of the best purchases we ever made. The money we've saved alone in not having to rent machines (that won't even do as good a job) has paid for this thing twice over, at least. 10 years and still going strong. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON ANYTHING ELSE. Why spend $200 on an inferior machine that will break after a year or two? Spend the extra dough on a battle-tested tank like this and NEVER have to worry about poor results or longevity again. For those wondering what cleaner I like the best... Bissell 78H63 Deep Clean Pro 4X.

The Best Carpet Shampooer EVER !
I bought this machine out of pure frustration. I love the lightweight ease of the Bissell, easy use and two way clean. I use the Bissell Big Green Carpet Machine in a 8 bedroom house living with a large family 2 dogs included. This shampooer cleaned with ease on extra dirty carpets where using other professional carpet cleaners had failed Removed family and dog stains with ease and left my carpets looking brand new. Love it Love it Love it, worth every cent :) :) :)

Excellent cleaner. Does a good job
Excellent cleaner. Does a good job. I have 4 dogs and my carpets get very dirty at this time of the year . I have had numerous cleaners and the' Big Green' is the best cleaner I have had. It is not too heavy either . Very easy to fill and empty and clean. Had a couple of little problems initially but they were sorted out immediately. Very happy with the level of customer care.

Just one more 5-star review
Things to know: despite saying 'machine only' the unit I was shipped contained everything you have seen advertised in other packages, including the extension hose for stairs and three small bottles of product to get you started. (Enough to do ~four tanks of cleaning.) My house has had 5 cats and 2 dogs, plus two adults and four teenagers living in it, and is carpeted throughout. We live on a main street, so it's always dusty, and I am a tradesman, so I get dirty. I have a spot-cleaner, but it was getting overworked, and renting units was expensive and unsatisfying. For Christmas this year, I decided to gift myself with this model, which has received SO MANY OTHER five-star reviews. (I was fortunate to get this model on a sale, so it was even more appealing.) Well, let me add one more 5-star to the pile, because this thing is everything everyone else claims it to be. Like any tool, it takes a bit to get used to it. And it is definitely a bit heavy -- not monstrously so, and it's reasonable that there has to be a place to put all the pieces and water and whatnot, but enough that my wife with chronic pain cannot easily move it. Those are the only knocks to it, though. Fabulously easy to set up. Demonstrably better than the rental product on first use. Easy to disassemble and clean. Suction is awesome - carpets are cleaned all the way down, yet very little water remains *IN* the carpet, and it's possible to walk barefoot without getting damp in just a few hours. Cannot say enough good things about this purchase. I have cleaned almost all my house carpets over the last 6 weeks, and been disgusted by the sludge that it was sucking out -- but that's to be expected when nothing this good has cleaned them in... ever. I'm looking forward to the next pass, in the hopes that it gets them EVEN CLEANER.. if that's possible. If you're thinking of buying something like this, stop thinking -- and buy *this* one.
