I have been eyeing these for some time now and when I saw the price on Prime Day, I couldn't pass it up.While I've been loving my Fire tablet, it has finally given up the ghost. I did consider the 10 inch Fire but with the limitation on apps, I decided a straight up Android tablet would make more sense. I've been using a 7 inch tablet that I got in a bundle from my wireless provider but wanted something a bit bigger. This fits both requirements perfectly.As many reviewers have stated, the resolution on this isn't as good as some other tablets but for the price, I'm not going to complain. I've been watching my Amazon Prime videos on it without noticing a difference. Netflix also is pretty watchable. I really only notice the lower res on things like Facebook and some games. Otherwise, not a problem for me.This thing is very responsive and so far the battery life is phenomenal. About the same as my Galaxy S6 phone, I'd say. I would still do a nightly charge just to make sure I have enough juice for whatever the day brings. I got mine mainly for watching videos so a nightly recharge is a requirement.Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase so far.Update: Best money I've ever spent! When Prime streaming had issues last night, I had already downloaded some of my video library onto the SD card I installed in the tablet so I was able to watch what I wanted to watch with no trouble at all. The battery life on this thing is phenomenal. I can do a lot of video watching, game playing, pretty much anything I want to do all day long and usually don't need to charge it until late in the evening. And one extra benefit - the Kindle app runs quite nicely and when I need a bigger font, I can get it on this. I still prefer my Paperwhite for reading in bed because the tablet is a lot heavier, especially with the Beetle case on it. I do recommend a screen protector that is better for glare if you want to use this outside. We took a short car ride yesterday and I was watching a video, which was difficult thanks to the glare on the screen.I highly recommend this device.

This tablet has proven to be really nice and a great purchase. The speed and beauty are not diminished by the resolution. I hate to disagree with the resolution naysayers but I will anyway. I am not sorry I bought this tablet. Its really thin, light, looks cool and has done everything I have asked. I have an Ipad Air 2 and I like this better. To me it's easier to use. Plug it into your computer and its a hard drive you can copy files to. I have launched apps, played music and movies. It does these things admirably!Update 8/14/2015 I really enjoy movies and games on this tablet. It's fast and has a beautiful screen. I'm so glad I got it. Goofed with one click ordering on Amazon and ordered my 9.7 GTA instead of placing it on my Christmas wish list. When I got this I had a HP Touchpad and a Motorola Xoom. In came the GTA with all of the gloom and doom of resolution. I must say that this little tablet did a number of things for me. It plays the movies that my Touchpad did faithfully but has the storage capacity I had with the Xoom. It plays games that the Xoom just didn't have the horse power to play. I have all the games I loved on my Touchpad on my GTA. It's thin and light. The battery life is awesome. So The Touchpad and The Xoom went to Goodwill with all my accessories for the devices. I have an IPAD Air 2 and I like this better. Music, movies, games, and alot more are just too cool on my Galaxy Tab A. I'm glad I goofed and that my wife was so cool about my goof. She also suggested I get a case. What a woman!

After an all-day initial charge yesterday (using the supplied charger/cable), my wife turned her birthday present on and started to load apps. In less than twenty minutes the tablet was so hot she could hardly hold it in her hands and it shut itself off due to an overheat condition. I set it on our ceramic countertop (I've never been afraid that a new electronic item might catch fire before! lol) and it continued to stay almost red-hot for half an hour - while it was OFF. I checked to see if it had turned itself back on, or if it hadn't actually shut down, but it was indeed completely shut off the whole time.Needless to say, we didn't attempt to turn it back on and now I get to check out Amazon's return/refund policy for the first time.I'll come back and update this review after testing a WORKING Galaxy Tab A.[Edit: 12/30/2016]Bumped to five stars. Not only was Amazon's return program simple, painless, and effective, the new Samsung Galaxy Tab A 9.7 really works well. We bought a 64GB SD card for it (as part of the original purchase) and my wife has been able to load absolutely anything she wants to her tablet. From looking over her shoulder I can say the colors are vibrant and the downloading and use of apps is very fast. She's a happy camper and so am I. After owning many, many Samsung devices this is the only one which has malfunctioned, and the seller made it right and the new one works perfectly.

I purchased this tablet (x2) as gifts for my elderly Mom and also for myself. My Mom is technologically challenged, having only recently discovered the ease of email as opposed to snail mail. So I wanted to get her something that wasn't going to be overly difficult to get used to. Additionally, it needed to have a decent display size as her eyesight isn't what it used to be. She enjoys reading books but over the years has gone from her paperback books to having to purchase larger hardcover books in order to more clearly see the text without straining her eyes. Others have commented on the poor screen resolution and picture quality on the 9.7" tablet. Certainly there are better resolutions out there but to be honest neither Mom nor I have noticed anything significant enough to cause us to regret the purchases. Battery life is outstanding compared to other tablets that I have owned and the processor is fast enough to meet our needs. The feel of the tablet is solid though it isn't heavy. This is good as older people may find it stressful to read eBooks if it were too heavy. Not the case here.In conclusion, I find that this tablet is an excellent purchase for the price and I would highly recommend it to anyone on a budget who wants a decent large screen tablet but who isn't overly concerned with the lower screen resolution.

I absolutely love this tablet. It is a really nice size and fits well in my hands. The screen is nice and bright and the touch controls work like a charm. Loads pages and games nicely. I am just waiting on my 128gb micro card so I can down load some more apps. It is a mid range tablet and the resolution is a little bit less than the Tab S4 but I was willing to sacrifice that for the 9.7 inch screen size. Speakers sound really nice and was a breeze to set up and connect to my in home Wi-Fi, it walks you right through everything you need to do to get up and running. I could not decide between this tablet and the Kindle HD 10.1 which has a better screen resolution and is a bit bigger, but is a heavier and thicker. The Galaxy is ultra-thin. Great buy. You will not be disappointed!
